  • Rant: Don't Butcher Chinese Names Please

DaddyFishGotBigPp when I said that zai was a surname, I meant this 宰, which means to govern, not the zai you're thinking about (在).
besides, it makes about zero sense if your surname adds onto the meaning of your first name like that. people don't pick their surnames, and if they wanted to match their name to make a pun/meaning, it would be kinda lame.
yunhai's a decent name though.

    DaddyFishGotBigPp oh dear ofc
but you know there's another last name that's also xiao and it's much more common than the xiao used for small? it's 萧. so you can prevent these dwarves from taking over? :joy:

yaoyueyi Foolish human, do you really think you can stop our domination? Earth will soon fall into the hands our digging folk, and the dig-dig songs shall spread thought these lands.

Um, I wanna ask help regarding naming a character, if you guys don't mind. More specifically, I need a male name which denotes 'always being on time'. It's going to be used for a character in a novel with a futuristic SciFi theme, so I need something appropriate🙂 Thanks in advance guys.

If its not Chinese, I can help with English names. If you can't find a good name for English ones, just take the latin root words you need and rearrange them to make a new name. It'll either look weird or unique. Otherwise, there's sites online that give name meanings like my personal favorite-https://www.behindthename.com/

Edit: I also use this a lot: https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/

            90751052 Lmao, that’s what I do too!

But I actually came here with a question for the lovely yaoyueyi ~

There was a beautiful Chinese name I heard once, and I don’t know how it was spelt, except that it ‘sounded’ like XiaXue or Xiayue to me. Is there a real name that’s like it/could be it?

Chryiss in chinese, there are practically an unlimited number of names because you could combine any characters to make a name, as long as it sounds normal. therefore, xiaxue and xiayue would both be perfectly fine names.

I really like you. I do. I've been thinking of making a book of my own for sometime now and I'm here about ask if there's a person who would like to work with me as an editor since English is not my first language and also someone who have interest in joining me and share ideas and guide me throughout the making of the said book. But got distract and i found this is interesting. Yes if you already realise it im trying to rope you in. Muahahaaha. But really I do have that kind of intentions but don't mind me. I'm just here to rant a bit. Ehehe ptehehe. I love how you criticise. So straightforward but i love it. I have always do the same. Oh yeah, are you a famous figure in here ? Someone popular ?

                  yaoyueyi
What seriously? Lol, I thought it might’ve been one of those looks fine to an English speaker but actually means something stupid in Chinese like beard.
What does either of those two names mean then?

Chryiss depends on what characters each one have. in chinese, there are tones, so numerous word can be "xia" in pinyin form but all have different sounds (or in some cases, the same sound) but different meanings.
now that i'm thinking about it some more, xiaxue is kinda weird because it kinda means falling snow/snowing
so I like xiayue better, which based on my interpretations, could be 夏月, or summer moon

yaoyueyi (Back at it again with the names lol sorry XD)

was curious about what you think of Linhua?
And which surname sounds better with it?

                      Lu Linhua
                      Chen Linhua
                      Luo Linhua
                      Shen Linhua

And which surname sounded better with Lifei? Was originally gonna put Bai, but that household is pretty evil in my other book lolol

                      Tang Lifei
                      Zhang Lifei
                      Zhao Lifei

Does Lifei sound better or Linhua sound better for a modern novel? Was talking to my mom a bit about names and she jokingly said that no one in the 21st century would name their child with "hua" in their name anymore and I kinda panicked lmao XD

                      Thank you in advance!

Errr what about Bai Ling for a name? Meant to be a rather pure character and (Eastern Fantasy book) she cultivates the Dao of Samsara, so very much related to the soul.
