  • Racism In The Empress's Gigolo Chapter 266

Soooo..... I was reading the latest chapter of The Empress's Gigolo (Chapter 266: Molten Iron) when I read something that was really messed up. As if that is a term for wild boar lol.... This is a website targeted at international audiences where racist stuff like this should be prohibited. The translator should have cut this fucked up shit out of the chapter, like really. How do you translate this and go like "hmmmmmm, this seems ok."

Here is the part:
Ren Baqian looked at the silver mirror in his hand and then at the smug looking craftsmen and Jiao Zuo. "How many days does it take for you to make a mirror? How stupid are you? Even the black-faced guy is smarter than you!"

Black-faced guy is another term for the wild boar.

"Two days!"

Ren Baqian looked askance at the craftsman who answered him.

"Even one black-faced guy could do the job given in two days."

The few men shrugged their heads and quietly listened to the lecture. The row of big and strong men bowed their heads and stood like walls.

Writing. is. NOT. a. safe. space.

Characters. are. not. always. good. people.

Characters. being. racist. doesn't. make. the. author. racist.

What you are describing is asking a translator to literally bastardize the work they're translating and censor it to hide content that someone somewhere could possibly find offensive, even if that content is both appropriate to the narrative and fitting to the character thinking/saying/doing it. Or asking a writer to please just not have any character do anything that anyone could ever find offensive. That is anti-expression, and frankly, absurd.

If you were offended, good! That means you have values. Values that character clearly doesn't share with you. That difference in values can serve to make a character mysterious, or problematic, or monstrous. It means that they too have their own value set, and they will behave in line with those values, even if those values are misguided or evil.

I mean, you think a character being referred to in a stilted way as being black is "fucked up shit"? If that's your setting on the outrage meter, I suggest you avoid stepping outside. The real world will traumatize you.

Most chinese webnovels are racist (even though most of people say they have strong nationalism...ugh) that's just how it is.

I don't read that story but isn't that just a character? :/ There are novels that suggest "rpe" intentions for some of their characters, but that doesn't mean the author support rpists. Characters can be hateful but they aren't the authors

Clowniac Chinese Web-Novels are trash in quality compared to regular literature anyways. Cutting out parts of them that aren't very tasteful to read wouldn't bastardize the novel as it is already of sub-par quality ROFL. These novels are novels people read for fun and personally reading stuff like that in them takes the fun out of the chapter for me. I'm not outraged or anything lol idk why you would think that.

A_Baby_Seal The translator should have cut this fucked up shit out of the chapter, like really. How do you translate this and go like "hmmmmmm, this seems ok."

Sounds plenty outraged to me. And I say this as someone frequently referred to as an "SJW nutcase".

If the novels are such poorly edited, poorly written trash with no quality control standards that could have entire character facets cut out with no change in quality, why are you reading them? You say yourself that "regular" literature is way better, and I know for a fact Is a lot more selective about the "offensive" content it allows.

        So why are you here?

Go read an actual book. Dont waste your time on things you clearly think are both bothersome and inferior quality. Life is way too damn short to waste time like that. =)

        Just read j.k rowling work ¯_(ツ)_/¯ .............

          Starco

I'm half tempted to tell him to go read The Painted Bird.
