Ehm. Should I offer my terrible ratios or not? Hah, why not. :p

Start of this new week:

148K views / 306 collections / 1 PS
483:1 - Not updated for >4 months hiatus

195k views / 155 collections / 0 PS
1258:1 - No longer is updated on Webnovel for several months, and since then, this ratio has shot back up the thousands LOL

Chryiss Those are numbers for the hobbyist.

    Epic awfulness to follow.

107k reads, 6 (six) collections including myself.

    That makes a brutal 17.8K:1

Wonder who popped that las collection. I was above 20k:1 a mere month ago :)

      StenDuring Yup haha!
And the last stat was after a week or so of views increasing by 2k each day for some odd reason or glitch. It used to be 170k something before that jolt lol. Still a bad ratio regardless of the ghost readers~

And you’re still around! Haven’t see you in some time, doing well?

        Chryiss

Yep. Running out of buffer for my main but otherwise just fine. That one is at around 1000:1 and going steady there btw.

Waah! 1390 collections :eyes: That's brilliant!

I'm barely crawling to 200. It's like when you watch the clock hand tick slooowly and annoyingly to the next number and it takes foreeeeever. That's my collection add traction.

Trust me to write gay niche :pensive: I can't help it. I want to give my men a fighting chance for love. :smile_cat: Woah. I'm going down an off topic path here. :flushed:

Ironically, my views are clocking up the numbers faster than the adds. I suspect there's a lot of curious cats taking a peek. Or maybe more spambots catching on to my metadata.

        Veronica8

        Hahaha :D

It's a sequel so I'm not entirely surprised retention is bad. The first book even comes with a warning I only wrote two out of the planned three books and have no plans to write the third.

Comparing book one and two is kind of interesting as well.

        Book one: 208k views : 25 collections.
Book two: 107k views and 6 collections.

That's a fifty percent drop in views and 75 percent drop in collections.

StenDuring and the number of words and chapters in each book?
That is, the second book has fewer views? for what period of time is there statistics?

            Gourmet_DAO

Eh, if the sequel had more views I'd be seriously worried.

Anyway, book one is some 130k words with the second one at around 110k. Give or take a few thousand each.

I dumped them here one chunk daily for a few months. There isn't all that much time between them in other words. After all we're talking two book I wrote 2003 - 2005. It's basically just an upload of an old work, so I never bothered even pretending to market them here.

120 and 90 "chapters" respectively. That's webnovel chunks and not real chapters. By any proper definition of chapter I think it's 40 and 30 respectively. Well, or something like that anyway.

The "chapter" problem is even more visible for my main. It's really 15 chapters per volume, but here I'm publishing it at almost 70 per volume.

I guess if you have very short chapters you'll get lots of views but a rotten number of collection. Publish 5k long chapters on webnovel and you'll probably end up with piss poor views numbers but a really nice views per collection ratio. Noone's gonna bother clicking into chapter two unless they're already really interested in the story.

StenDuring Thank you for sharing such interesting information. The optimal number of words in the chapter I count from 750 to 1200 words. Bonus chapters 1550-2200 words. It’s easier to read.

If I am very interested in the translation work and there will be 5500 words in the chapter, I will probably read on, but if this is the original work I will probably stop looking at the first thousand words, regardless of good English.

XeRey Welcome! And those are pretty good for a new novel and writer to this site. Webnovel honestly doesn’t have the best system for exposing new novels, so any new collection you receive early on is significant. Just keep writing consistently, that’s the best way to grow. Promoting your story helps as long as it’s not spammy, but the onus definitely falls on you unless your story caters to popular fan service or story types. Don’t suggest that though. Just you do you.

                4 days later

1 collection and 1.300 views this is just sad I can't make anyone stay, just like in real life kkk

Mamelunka Don’t get discouraged! How long ago did you start the story? How many chapters do you have out so far? And what’s the story about?

Chryiss 3 chapters. I plan around 60 for part one and then part two. I translate my own work, which I finished long ago so I can update frequently.

It is a fantasy novel about a liberated slave girl and a prince.
But because It's a slowburn (Prince gets friendzoned 2 times lol) I'm afraid I'll never hit it big.
But I keep translating anyway, it's fun

Mamelunka Yeah if the story type is or isn’t popular, that really affects the mass appeal. I ask if new and how many chapters, because stories that update a lot tend to get more readership, and obviously the longer it’s out, the greater the stats. Sounds like you’re passionate, so keep at it! You never know, some stories jump suddenly.

WTF?! I'm not moving much at all. 😵 I wonder if I should go back to daily releases. Nah. I can't do daily. Friday 3 x weekly is the best I can keep up with and ensure quality. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I'll just keep on, keeping on. Either way, I'm finishing this TMS beast.

If I stay vigilant, I should have this story done and dusted by the end of March or early April. Kind of heavy, since the Battle of Iwo Jima kicked off around March during the time.

Veronica8 Wish I had your diligence in writing. My book would’ve been finished months ago (╯°□°) ╯︵ ┻━┻
You’re doing great! And I just realized, I forgot to mention that I really like this last book cover. It’s soft, cute, and nostalgic almost.

Chryiss Yay! The cat wins. :smile_cat: That's good because it's the final cover. I'm not changing it

No love for the cover of the men in their saucy moment?

XD joking. Tbh. I thought the soft pink BL cover would be good click bait. Then again, the story was getting a lot of suspicious lifts in views. Was kind of time to change covers before I attracted a gang of creepy pervs.

I'm very happy to leave the book with the cat cover.

Thank you again. I aim to complete many quality tales as possible. I want to leave something of a nobody legacy behind when I bite the dust.

Anyone experienced a serious drop in new collections when you got out of the news ranking?(stories less than 30 days).

Because i'm living this, it's depressing. From 30-40 collections a day to barely 3-5. Is there a rise when the story goes above a given number of chapter or you can't expect anything before being featured?

Arkinslize I can’t exactly help you there because my novels were before the time of New power stone rankings. So I’ve never experienced such a drop. But with that said, I have plenty of experience with not having any place of exposure with my novels.

Collections will grow slowly as you’ve seen. And updating daily will always help you keep these numbers either constant or growing. The best shot at getting back that exposure you had with the New ranking is to rank on another chart. This might take time. And some genres and lists are harder to rank on. Best rated is a pretty good place to start because you don’t need huge popularity or stats like with the overall or Popular lists, and there’s also trending too. Basically, you just have to work on a balance of releasing consistent content while encouraging readers to be active, ie reviews, comments, voting, etc so that you show up on these charts. The activity list is another possibility, but you’ll have to have very active readers for that. In short, you’ve now hit the grind period. Good luck!

Just write shorts if you want gorgeous numbers.

                                How do you like 35:1?

Helps that it's one chapter. Pop it and read it. Only two views.

Oh, obviously puny numbers of collections hide in that ratio. 58 to be more precise.

                                Gourmet_DAO

Yeah i noticed this. I also receive notifs for 1 or 2 collections sometimes, but when i check the collection number is the same. Don't know if it's a bug or people dropping the story.

There's also a bug i'm quite upset about. When i'm searching my story manually, either by rating, popular or collections it doesn't appear where it should. Only the 'updated' function seems to work.

More than a month that my stories never moved up or down with these parameters. Always the same stories above and below me when some of them have been inactive for months.

                                Chryiss

Yeah, i will try to accumulate some chapters maybe to top the release ranking for a week/month. But it means this month will be boring as hell.

But if it's the same for everyone, i guess i shouldn't worry.

                                5 days later

26,400 views and 161 collections so 1:164 for me. Though, OP Paladin (abbreviation) dropped 8 days ago. I don't know what a good ratio is so can someone give me the ideal ratio?

CautiousTitan It’s tricky to say what’s ideal because it’s based on a lot of dependents. In your case, I’d say that’s a very good ratio for a week old story. Perhaps are you on the power stone rankings for new stories? Because that amount of collections is above average and suggests increased exposure to people to become readers.

Anything less than 1:400 I’d consider fine for a new novel and under 1:200 as very good.

Chryiss Ok. Thanks for the information. Webnovel doesn't seem to have info on it.
As it pertains to the New Power Rankings, I'm ranked #47 on the list as of right now so I don't know if the ratio will hold or rise as more people see it. I also don't know if my rank will fall or rise so I'll just monitor it for now.
I'll have to keep those two ratios in mind in the future. I guess I'll aim for <1:300 for the lifetime of the novel. It would be nice if Webnovel automatically placed the ratio in the dashboard for us. It seems like a solid data point to gauge the story. Other than Valid Reads of course.

                                      CautiousTitan

As Chryiss said it depends mostly on exposure. When i was in the new ranking, i was earning 20 to 40 collections a day, since i'm not anymore 2-3, sometimes 0.

I also heard that people earned a lot of collections at once when their novels have been featured for a week. In the end average stories hundred of chapters long will earn tens/hundreds/thousands of collection in a day. So keep writing, that's all you can do.

For easy views and collections though, just add a R-18 tag. You'll be surprised..

                                        I have three novels.
Complete one. (With 3M views and 10k coll... 1:300?)
The other one is about 30k views or less with close to 453 colls.= 1:44 (good I guess?)

Don't know if it's good or not.

But you could check out my stories
                                        "Hello, Mr Li" (completed)
                                        "Beware: She's a devil" (WPC99 entry)
                                        "My Crazy Housemate"

Heh, my novel, Rekka's Last Stand has 1 collection and ~150 views. So, 1:150 for me!

ReincarnatedSaint sorry for the late response. My understanding of how this works:
Take your book page views and divide it by the number of your total collections.

                                            Example
                                            - Views 10K
                                            - Collection adds 100
                                            10000/100= 100

                                            The ratio would be 100:1
Loosely put, 100 views per collection add.

This was the best stat we had to determine read interest on our books before the dashboards (that's still wonky). Having said that, it didn't factor out scrapper bot views.

As Chryiss has mentioned before. The ideal ratio is anything under the hundreds. So a ratio of 1:50 is better than 1:500. Loosely speaking, it means for every 50 views of the book page, a peep has added the book to their library.

                                            1168.42: 1

                                            4371.43: 1

                                            4842.5: 1

                                            2000: 1

                                            713: 1

                                            1123: 1

Does it mean it's time to wind up all these novels? Quickly finish the end or can I continue to write?

                                              Gourmet_DAO

From what people have written here anything above 1000:1 is pretty poor performance as far as retention goes.

Yeah, that means I'm the king of piss poor performance :D

Given your numbers above, if the two stories with 4k+:1 have less than 100k views you're basically writing them only for yourself. Assuming you're actively writing more than one story (as in not yet finished), I'd personally axe those two in favour of the others. Possibly axe the 2000:1 as well.

The main reason I just laugh off 17000:1 (yep, seventeen thousand views per collection) is because I finished that story 2005, so it was only a matter of republishing it here.

StenDuring That is, at 4371.43: 1

                                                4842.5: 1

better to finish them, and focus on those with more collections and views?

                                                As previously mentioned here https://forum.webnovel.com/d/34886-how-long-does-it-take-to-reach-a-million-views-for-an-original-novel/34

that the main productivity is 3500 words per day, every day, for 1-2 months and also according to that list. Views easily gain 50k per month!

That is, the main thing is not even the story itself, but the ability to write a lot?

Well, I get it, thanks, your advice helped me. Now I will try to finish these stories and pay more attention to those stories where they read more and more subscriptions. I needed this advice! Respect!

Obviously a one chapter short story with a low number of collections, but still :D
