I believe "army" is linked to the event because it was called "bts army", so the people participating were part of a sort of army of fans.

Koolpin uh it was to celebrate their 6th anniversary this year (13 june) and like ARMYs wrote a lot of fanfics and stories and like theres prizes to be won.
