You're browsing around on WN, maybe you curiously click things here and there. There's some entertaining enough reads, a few oldies and but goodies, and straight up there's the works here you absolutely hate or just generally dislike.

What do you personally do?

I thought the polite thing to do was leave it alone or ignore it. There's hundreds of thousand of stories on here after all, why waste any more time on something you dislike? It's the whole "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it" sort of mentality. There's a difference between, 'I'm not too into this' and 'this is trash' but generally that's what I do, even if I know the rankings are probably messed up with that sort of mentality.

So what does everyone else here do?

Do you leave a scathing but truthful review? Do you also just ignore it? How do you react? Or do you just love everything on here and can't relate?

Also does anyone else wish there was a personal "do not show me this novel ever again" button?

boycott. they're not worth my time.

CCmei , I think it's better to just leave it than hurting the feelings of the writer.

I'm someone who enjoys putting my thoughts into the comments section for others to read, be they good or bad.
If I find a Novel I love, I'll share my joy. If I find a Novel I'm annoyed by, I leave scathing critique.
But if a Novel is so bad that I consider reading it a waste of my time, I will just state my disappointment on the chapter I drop it to let others who are also thinking about dropping it know that they are not alone in their misery.
Sometimes the act of mockery is more enjoyable then the source material.

queenofkahel So that's why I see you making diss comments about Almighty Ring, which is pretty much more fun than reading the novel itself. Laughing intensifies

CCmei Ignore. Unfounded hate is discourteous to both the author and readers. Constructive criticism is another thing. And to be blunt or straight to the honest truth is fine, but there's a fine line between that and coming off as caustic. What I dislike more than anything is reviews without having read the story.... That includes both negative and positive ones. Or exp comments. It's fun and all at first, but I'd like to read more enjoyably and easily without having to shift through empty characters.

Chryiss Love my comments or hate them, at least I put effort into them.
But when I go to read a new story and all of the comments before me are:
            A: FIRST
            B: First!!!!!
            C: XP
            D: Exp
            E: Thanks for the XP
Me: I really dislike that the MC got such an undeserved power up so soon into the Story.
F: THRUSTTHUNDER IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT THEN STOP READING AND WRITE YOUR OWN!!!11!
            G: First
It gets a bit silly to even bother having a comments section. 🤷‍♂️

Ignoring it would be wrong, these novels get upvoted so much that the there is no difference between good and bad novels.
Authors delete bad reviews and useless exp reviews clutter everything.
If it's a bad novel review it bad, if it's a good novel review it good.
You sayd it yourself there are so many bad novels, if not the for the review system what can we trust.
              You get so disappointed.

trekt Well if it was definitely bad, then something should be said after having spent (wasted? lol) time reading it and determining it as such. It's true that the review system is messed up, but unless it's really bad, I wouldn't put in the effort anymore. I only know of one deleted review of mine after I listed out the flaws and why it should/how it can be improved. My honesty was probably the most blunt in that review, but it also garnered the most likes and comments in agreement of any that I've ever done. It was also 3.5 stars lmao.

How bad is bad depends on the individual. Critical reviews are good in my opinion as long as they don't personally attack the author (or vice versa to the readers/reviewers) or the genre. I've seen a rise in the latter type which rate low just because they hate the genre or story topic while not reading it at all.... Generalizations are harmful when good stories and authors get caught up in it.

Sigh, Webnovel really ought to listen to its users better. I feel like they're causing more issues with what they do decide to implement rather than fix the loud and clear concerns of the readers.

                Loving everyone's responses so far.

Here's another thing that bothers me- the joke novels.Or the sexy but badly written ones. You know the kind.

I don't want to ruin people's fun , sometimes it's just a big joke and other times people genuinely enjoy things. But I'll come across something really highly rated and when I click on it....oh...well that's terribly disappointing. And you can leave a warning review or such but that's just asking to get attacked by others (spammers).

                CCmei

Usually, I just ignore it. Or if its a genre, I just put it on hold until something good (to me) pops up. Happens with a lot of stuff. I hate it at first, but something good based on said genre catches my eye, and then I go in and look at the ones I passed on at first. Some turn out to be actually good, while others are still as bad as when I first read them.

                ThrustThunder I've never received those.

Then again, my books rarely receive comments. When they do in a blue moon, they are generally civil and nice.

                  CCmei

Every time i have a story that i found interesting i read 10 - 20 chaps of it if its good i read it if not i ignore it.

I normaly give every story a chance except if its a genre i just dont read.

Yes taste is different, but you can always review the effort or the quality.
You might like a story for whatever reason, but are you not allowed to point out what is bad or even just be blunt and say it is bad.
Liking a novel or not doesnt make it better or worse.
