It feels quite eerie to write a chapter and ask the audience something and NOT receive any comments. Is this normal?
No comments or ratings yet?
ThatClassyMobGuy I think? I don't know, it depends on how many reader you have including the silent reader and those who actually comment.
I got my first comment after 14 chapters and 24 followers. Not here though, on royalroad

You shouldn't hope on gaining comments or rating fast without updating daily here; too much traffic and very minimum exposure of latest updates ("full support of new authors" is bullshit). Someone told me that she updated everyday until 30s chapters before getting her first comment. Even more, its the popular "Romance" genre
For the most part writing or posting anything on the internet is a bit like a street performance. You set up your corner and leave out your tips/comments jar but rarely does anything throw a coin, let alone a bill.
Many passerbys may take a look back, some are even interested to enough to take time out of their day to watch. But how many of them tip?
Popular authors have a following, the crowed recognizes them and their followers flock. Maybe they're being posted all over social media so other fans know when to come running. But that started out the same way to.
You can find ways to promote yourself but ultimately you have to keep performing and wait as your fan base trickle in and build up.
I guess I should be fortunate that I have a few comments and a few spirit stones for my novel.
18 chapters in and new author.
Thanks, fellas. I needed that explanation. It's just weird, you know? It sometimes feels like you're up on a stage performing and none applaud you for your performance, at least that's how it feels like to me. Maybe some may applaud your performance when you least expect it, who knows?
It took me about 3 months before I got any comment (and I updated everyday).
And the first comment I received was about how s* my story is.
ThatClassyMobGuy You should think about it as a practice, it's really not going to get you any recognition yet. The first book is usually the hardest to finish but then again, I'm in my first one too.
I try to think that they just care enough to read but not enough to comment?
I know I used to read without commenting because I don't want to deal with the creator of the work because it makes the work, I don't know, less immersive.
