So I've been reading this book titled "last man on earth when there is no earth ?"
It's a sci-fi were the MC finds himself on a different planet after a certain event.
Technically, since he is no longer on earth it means he got isekaied, right? Does that make star lord from guardians of the galaxy an isekai protagonist too?
What is an isekai?
RABBITICOL I feel you there.
Answering the op, I guess the term isekai is more to fantasy world with magic creatures and sorts of things.
Don't ask me I only realized it's an isekai halfway through writing it.

Star lord… It's not an isekai protagonist. He was abducted by an alien ship.
Isekai is a bad rip-off of Chinese transmigration stories. The things to look for are harem, ecchi, trash male protagonist, 'truck-kun', medieval fantasy worlds with fake western elements, magic or adventuring, etc. Of course there are some decent ones, but to me they're all female protagonist. They are also only supposed to be Japanese works (I don't believe I saw a foreigner doing one, though I'm only thinking of manga, not novels). It's also either the person dies and is transported to the aforementioned medieval 'western' world, or they are still alive and are transported because of some 'unique' element going wrong. There're also ones where they change bodies after transportation, like a certain story where male MC becomes a special pond, and he turns himself into an onsen where a bunch of females bathe (and he continues to level up).
I know this entire thing sounds biased, but I swear it's objective.. The general isekai is trash. (If you take up the genre as a writer, please forgo the fanservice clichès)
YulongYuXianTaiyin I remember hearing many times that isekai roughly translates to "another world", all the other cliche elements side, being transported to another planet is the same as saying being transported to another world (they practically mean the same thing)
There isn't really a rule that says the setting has to be in middle ages Europe, it's just that it's overdone.
Funny thing is that the MC spent most of the first chapters debating whether he reiterated or got transported just to end up having this exact debate with himself .
Poche well, you can argue that a lot of isekai protagonists ar abducted from their original world, being summoned to become heroes and so on.

Technically, the term "isekai" doesn't simply mean another world, like in space. The term is directly translated as "not of this world" but colloquially means "parallel world". So being in outer space is not isekai. The genre really does mean someone simply being sent to another 'alternate' world. In Western media, a series like 'The Chronicles of Narnia' would be an isekai.
I write an isekai novel myself, so I'm well aware of the tropes. However, that doesn't mean that I lean on the tropes that people who write isekai tend to use over and over. So, just because it's an isekai, it doesn't mean there will be automatically fanservice and harem and OP MCs.
I'd be happy to give you examples of isekai anime that don't rely on these.
kazesenken i want it!!!! Give it to me!! Including your novel!! As long it's not an overused cliches trope, I'll take it all!!
Carciphones_02 This is Kazesenken's story: https://www.webnovel.com/book/14734744205449505
Tomoyuki thanks!! Kind sir!!
(っ˘з(˘⌣˘ )
For starters, give the animes 'Saga of Tanya the Evil' and 'The Hero is Overpowered but Overly Cautious' a try.
They are good examples of good storytelling that doesn't rely on the tropes, or just makes fun of them.
No, there is an adventurer's guild, but he has no part in it. Rather, he is part of a knight's guild that goes around helping defend the kingdom.
Also, No Game No Life is actually pretty guilty of leaning on the tropes. Despite that, I find that series amusing because of the quirkiness.
Pleasedeteme in mine the tropes exist but at least the MC does the FL multiple times

Whycanti lol!! I hate harem so, under my novel tags section. I put a
" no harem " . Bright and clear.
The only harem that I can accept and love the most is the world god only knows.
kazesenken Hoho!!! I've watched both of it!!! Dayum that's some cool anime!!!!
- Edited
kazesenken but, for the overly cautious hero.... Hmm.. i heard the settings of the story is getting darker and darker in the novel. I will still watch it as long there is no goblin slayer shit inside.
"Goblin slayer is a good anime.. but, I can't handle too much gory. The biggest gory anime that i've taken liking so far right now is Re zero.

Pleasedeteme yeah... I don't watch both of them. To sad and gory.
And for that Issei... That is a man of culture right there. But yeah... To many hoes... Bruh...
Still.. at least Issei is not dense and stay true to his desire.( He is not forceful, right?)
How about bakemonogatari? I've never watched it. Can anyone give me the list of where do i need to start if I want to watch bakemonogatari?
Another harem story i like is.. sayounara zetsubou sensei. This is.... Some good. Things.(。ノω\。)
Carciphones_02 man of culture I so loved that manga!

Pleasedeteme nah.. it's .. let's just say that i'm not a fan of big boobs
For the world god only know... The MC conquering the girl is not for the sake of building a harem, but, to save his life from death and unconditionally, save the world.
I like the world god only know because... It doesn't have too many echhi scene and not one of the main focus of the story. While Issei... Is a boob lovers. Which.. i'm not a big fan of.
But, i'm not saying the anime is bad.. i watched some clips of the anime and it has a good plot, story and action.. but, it still not my taste.
And yeah ... I don't like reverse harem to..
Because, most of the stories I've read has all the male leads force themselves on the girl.
The girl can be stupid too most of the time.(not always.. just, most of the time.)
There are some good stories too.. like kiss him not me. And also, Bakarina.
Pleasedeteme I'm straight but not interested in the D. For now...
(☞ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)☞
Pleasedeteme meh... I am flat chested. But, I don't really care. My ideal of a girl is a tall girl that don't have big chest. I like to wear baggy clothes so, it doesn't really matter what type of chest I have. The smaller the better.
Pleasedeteme Well...It's not about having many girl or boy that likes the MC , that I love watching harem anime.
It's about how the male MC treats the girl around him and how male leads treat female MC.
For Male MC, he is not dense. Being dense is fine, but there's a limit to how much of a dense he is. Overly dense is stupid. He treats the girl right. So what if he is a pervert?? As long he respects the girl and dont abused her, I'm fine with it. Also, for the plot. Some of the story with harem is really good. I think, i remember this anime but i don't remember the title. This MC is cool guy that everybody like. Perfect. But, he doesn't really show emotion on his face. Even if many girl, showing their perverted side or violence side.. the mc doesn't mind. But, when that girls are facing a problem.. he will help them. His resolve is to never let any girl cry because of him. He knew that all the girl around him love him. But, he also make it clear that he is not interested. Apparently, all the girl that like him has a dark past. And the ML helps all the girl to overcome their past.
For female MC. What I like is that, for the Male leads to stop forcing themselves on FL. Like this vampire story where all the vampires goes crazy for FL because her blood is delicious. And FL just went.. sob sob non stop. Then.. she feels confused about which male to choose. And then.. bla bla bla.

Pleasedeteme yeah!! True that!!!
It's not that I hate on harem or reverse harem. It just, sometime i hate it for the overused plot.( In visual novel ) Sometime i hate it about how they treated each other..( like ML abused the girl at first, then when the ML being kind.. FL feel thankful( despite the caused of the problem is from ML himself) If it were me... I would feel vengeful and tried to kill them in their sleep(depends by how bad they treated me before.)
And.. for ML, i just don't like it about how sometime, ML is being labeled as pervert despite everything is the girls fault and despite everything was an accident. Also, the part when ML or even FL forced their partner into sex.
Pleasedeteme good thing it happened in anime!!
〜(꒪꒳꒪)〜(~‾▿‾)~
Pleasedeteme yep.. it did happen.
Pleasedeteme there's a lot of things like that. Even in history.

Pleasedeteme flat is justice!... but I like me some plot too
Pleasedeteme I'm more of a Yami fanglad we have an adult version of her
Whycanti i thought you're talking about yami in black clover. That is some buff chick.
(ㆁωㆁ)
Carciphones_02 yeah, that dude is pure badassness
you guys do realize you can @ multiple people per reply right? Y'all are bloating these threads to hell and back.
Pleasedeteme Actually you seem to have one misconception on reverse harem... Harem is mostly sexual, whereas reverse harem is romance (meaning sexual acts, unless a pornographic work, are limited or nonexistent, and the males just have feelings and long for the one female. Not trying to jump into her skirt). That's why it differs from real life and the males don't care about the sharing, since it never really gets to that point (jealousy occurs, but that's normal). In normal works, I've never actually seen a 'reverse harem' where the female is in an actual relationship with the multiple males. Usually a choice is made for one person, or not at all. I don't know why harem is so inappropriate and widely accepted, but reverse harem is discriminated against to the point the authors are afraid to go through with it to the finish. Well, neither are good or bad. Just wish they had equal standing
YulongYuXianTaiyin reverse harem is discriminated against to the point the authors are afraid to go through with it to the finish
You haven't played any otome games or read shoujo manga/watch shoujo anime, have you?
YulongYuXianTaiyin I LOVE REVERSE HAREMS. THEY'RE SO FUN. cough I mean... yeah.. you haven't played otome games before? You're honestly missing out...
Tomoyuki Most of what I was using as examples [in my head] were from shoujo romance manga. Otome games shouldn't count
Pleasedeteme You didn't offend me, just like I meant no ill-will either. I said that I believe neither are good nor bad, since it can turn out in different ways depending on the author. If you're talking about real life, I agree reverse harem isn't doable, but in fiction it should be. No, I don't play otome games nor will I ever (I also don't think they should count here because it's a game and you can't say any of it is canon, either). Everything I said was based on my experience of reading /watching hundreds different types of works. There are exceptions and I can name a few, but it wouldn't even make up 1% of the overall amount. Whereas 99% of harem works I've seen end up either inappropriate and/or the male always staying with multiple females (and maybe adding more continuously). Though most harem works I've come across are only Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. Since every culture is different, maybe if it came elsewhere there'd be more surprise. But I've gotten around and have seen it from numerous examples, so I don't know where others are finding the exceptions (on here?). I'm not biased since I like both, but it's easier for a female to get into a female protagonist with multiple love interests than the opposite. I just wish there were more, since I'm constantly longing for works that don't exist (like 2nd male leads winning or certain settings)
Sorry that this was lengthy.. Thanks for putting up with it
Isekai (Japanese: 異世界, transl. "different world") is a genre of Japanese light novels, manga, anime, and video games that revolve around a normal person from Earth being transported to, reborn, or trapped in a parallel universe, fantasy world or virtual world.
Why such a long post for such a simple thing?
