LittleBlueLake I've been contacted by someone representing the WN sth who also mentioned that she has read the few initial chapters of my book and has seen my capabilities in writing and all that.
That's how i got to this. Received a contract but i haven't submitted or signed to it yet, asking the editor in charge for more info but no reply at the moment. I'm a minor and i hope nothing about that will affect my work. I don't know much relating to the marketing parts and I'm still wondering what kind of rights will I lose. I published it on Wattpad (they got to me through commenting on wattpad) I hope I won't need to delete the book on wattpad since i've gained quite some readers and followers. A non exclusive contract was offered, I don't know everything about it yet.
Will it be a good choice to sign the contract?

thatonetheatrekid OMG THE EXACT SAME THING IS HAPPENING TO ME, I also got an email from someone named Livia on wattpad site and also email from someone by the name of Arthur sending me the non exclusive contract. How to join the discord thing?? Help plss

I thought it weird that they contacted me for a contract as even if i got some decent view count (at least from what i expected to have). I am not sure if it was a bot but either case after reading everything here it looked like really it was "smart" of me just say no. Seems like too much work for nothing especially since i am at a hobby level writing

Nayelly_Coronado You should be legal but I think if you're under you need a guardian to sign it? This stuff you can definitely ask the people trying to contract you etc.

don_offl I'm not an author myself. however from what I've heard from the authors I follow, Webnovels contract is really exploitative, You lose your rights to the characters, and you typically end up with bad pay and stuff. overall I don't recommend it.

basically, The bad part us that they want the rights to your stuff which is bad enough. It gets worse since the pay only lasts for 4 months, kind of a bait-a-fish tactic, a lot of what you get are also bot messages. Btw, if it says future works too, that's REALLY bad- kind of. stops you from owning any content. Overall i'd recommend either signing on with a better place, or just going on as is. trust me, 800 dollars isn;t worth something you put so much time and effort into, And even if your more passion. and are fine with a little money, not owning your characters is a horrible thing.Webnovel is a fine site to post on, I won;t argue against that. but they are quite famous for their bad treatment of authors/contractees, their contracts aren't exactly fun ya know? that's my take on it anyway.

jomaw46365 You have a very poor understanding of the contract.

You consent to handing over all copyright for the material, and the pay percentage is lesser than other, self publishing options, but your pay comes down to popularity.

The $800 over four months is money out of their pocket, not revenue on your book, and is incentive for those who otherwise wouldn't be earning any money, although they will definitely try bring readers to your book as it is their earnings too.

As for the contract specifically, all I can say is that the penalties for breaching it are beyond unreasonable, at least it is for anyone who earns enough to make a living off of writing. You also agree to be bound to the company for essentially all future works (giving that they meet their end of the agreement). Whilst they may not enforce things to such a degree, the contract allows them to.

It is a contract in which all the power is skewed toward one party which at the very least is labeled in my country as an "unfair contract".

I think that signing a contract is a sink or be sinked situation. It can either bloom or die.

Tomoyuki Webnovel is a VERY different system and audience to what most are used to. As someone who's been in publishing a long time I can tell you had I to learn a great deal and change approaches in order to find my audience on Webnovel. So I suspect it wasn't that your advice was bad, but that people were pointing out that knowing the right approaches in Webnovel is different. Sounds like they didn't phase that very nicely. Sorry to hear that. But as someone who joined last year I can tell you the authors are very helpful and generous with advice and assistance. Yes, there will be some frank discussions, but on balance, most authors on WN are great.
