  • Holy smokes. I freaking hate wish fulfillment stories!

Well... I'm bored at the moment with nothing else to do, so I decided to just nitpick at this overused theme we can see in a good chunk of the novels from this website. Honestly, I really can't stand wish fulfillment stories and here is why.

Firstly. It's cringe af. Of course, a good author can make a decent story with this but the majority just ends up being crappy and unreadable at times

Secondly. The MC gets OP powers handed to him on a silver plate by some random god FOR NO APARENT REASON. Then, since he is too OP there is simply NOTHING that can harm him or add some tension to the story.

Thirdly. The majority of those stories has a really bad romance that doesn't even make sense, especially when it's a harem. Oh boy, it becomes cringy to the point I almost ended up spitting blood due to anger. For some reason the girls don't mind at all having to share the man they love with other chicks, also they are suddenly bisexuals wtf? But what makes me cringe the most is none other than the "love" we see on the romance. Like dude, you know the thing is bad when even those generic as fuck harem anime has a better romance than those shit. Those authors don't know jack shit about ACTUAL romance and love, they don't even know they can start their relationship as friends and even sex-partners!!

And I can't forget the system... Sigh... It's the trope I hate the most when reading the majority of the stories from this website. My god, 90% of the systems just ends up becoming an annoying douchebag that carries the MC on the entirety of his or her journey. Also, sometimes they even end up banging their system because why not? This is why I just prefer systems that don't possess any form of rational thoughts or personality.

I just really want to see stories where the MC is a nobody. A guy with no cheat whatsoever. I like to see his struggles against everything while obtaining power through his OWN efforts rather than become an OP mf just by breathing. I find it to be especially cringe when the MC behaves arrogantly despite knowing "his" power is merely a gift from a god, without it they would just be trashes with no future and that really pisses me off.

Well what about you guys? I'm curious to see your opinions on this matter. You guys can also share your nitpickings with me!

How about a story where the MC gets a OP skill, but thinks it's too risky and relies on his own abilities (cooking) for a while? And then, slowly integrating both together into some kind of hybrid battle chef? Include some easy to exploit weaknesses for the villains to take care of and the MC to overcome. Some sprinkles of natural character development and relationships that aren't what they seem.

Voila! Here is the recipe for my book: My attack stat is negligible...

Jokes aside, I agree with you. The wish fulfillment is exactly what it is -- an author (likely young) fantasizing about getting everything that he/she ever wanted. I'm too old to write that kind of stuff. Buried in my novel is even an entire arc dedicated to making fun of one of those types of MCs (who happens to exist as a random character in the world)

I agree. I especially like Er Gen's novel. Beseech the Devil and the Renegade Immortal. (didn’t read ISSTH, felt like it was kinda slow, start). But I also read wish-fulfillment stories in my spare time. (Just for the humor though.)

Coiling Dragon sounds like what you're looking for....but I do agree that a good chunk of wish fulfillment books are light on plot, romance and general reason...

One of the antagonists from one of my novels is going to be the stereotypical MC from those wish fulfillment stories. He would not only have a system and a harem of braindead chicks, but he would have ALL the clichês we can see on those kind of novels (It's also an indirect way to mock HaremGodz, an asshole author who only experienced people here on this website have heard). While the MC from my novel will have to become strong through his own efforts.

          Pufahahahahahah

Antagonist walks in, his bi-sexual chick molesting each other coming behind them.

Looking forward to the scene where Mc bullshit him, Antagonist, ready to face slap but get face slaped

I agree with what you are saying. In fact, I think stories like you are describing only work if the story is told in a joking/unserious tone. Lighthearted tones can get away with a lot of things because any cliche can be written as a joke. It’s like a spoof movie: characters can die, come back to life, and then say something like, “Whoops I’m supposed to be dead!” Serious tones don’t have that type of luxury. Things have to make sense or they start to read like comedy anyway. This is why so many anime’s are told in a lighthearted tone. Unintentional comedy ruins serious writing. Actually, almost anything unintentional happening in writing is bad.

I think romance is something a lot of writers (including myself) struggle with. Making two people step through an emotional relationship that makes sense without moving too fast can be difficult when you know they end up together. Writing every scene has to be calibrated to the characters relationships and development anyway, but romance adds a tricky element to character interactions. I tend to over play these emotions and make characters inconsistent or cringey by acting strange. Others ignore any emotions the characters have towards each other until there is a change to make love, then the romance magically turns on. Either way is bad.

Tension and conflict can be built in different ways. For example, inner conflict can arise if the hero realizes he is powerful enough to conquer the world rather than save it. However, combat does lose its appeal. Power creep hits a lot of authors hard with this as well. That is where the villains have to keep getting stronger to make the fight interesting for the hero. It results in the plot spiraling into “he killed the town villain, then the world villain, then the EVIL GOD OF THE UNIVERSE! Now, he is fighting... crap we are out of ideas...” I also tend to hate when story lines and villains are defeated too quickly, which happens a lot with over powered heros.

            Cool thread by the way.

shadowdrake27 Thanks mate. Well, if any of you are curious about why I didn't post any new chapters of Be Supreme! The reason is that I decided to focus on the making of other characters while also adding more details to the worldbuilding. One of the things that I noticed, if you want to write your story in a way that doesn't stress you then I recommend focusing on the worldbuilding. It works like a foundation for your story, and the lack of attention I gave to this simple fact ended up becoming one of the biggest writer-block I've had ever faced.

And for anyone that is curious. I had the urge to write this thread due to a recent pokemon fan-fic I was reading. It was too cringy for me to handle it, and even now I can't understand why it has such high reviews...

I’m glad that you are taking some time to flesh out the world and characters! It will help your story a lot. Everything makes more sense when you have a consistent and defined world and cast to work with! I hope it goes well.

shadowdrake27 Haha thanks. And yeah, you're right! But even now, the biggest problem is about the names. Man, I'm really bad at them

The only one that I think it's good is Hitogami since his name is actually going to become a huuge plot point on the story

kazesenken yes I agree with you...... like it’s kinda boring having to read the same thing over and over again. Especially when it’s the most boring shit you every read.

Use a different language or online name generator for names. A lot of my names come from those sources. Latin makes great names for mystical creatures and specific places. For example, a fire golem could be named “ignis”.

I apologize if I offended you. Perhaps I should phrase that differently in the event that it is read literally. My limited experience with review swaps shows that a lot of novels have only five star ratings, even if I can’t read it because the grammar and English is so bad.

Furthermore, some of the authors I do review swaps with seem to want a cursory swap of 4+ star ratings. This results in me getting a 5-star review that says, “this story was nice!” They also have commented on my response saying things like, “I’ve added commas! Please update this 3-star review!” This is especially true for stories with relatively few reviews.

On other websites I’ve frequented, stories with illegible grammar get taken down or rated the lowest score automatically. Thus, I’m not used to seeing a high rated story (even with only a few reviews) that is poorly written.

Again, this was not an attack on anyone. Merely an observation on the high number of over-rated stories.
