Zogarth1337 Don't lump all Westerners in together, I don't mind the system at all. And many others don't either. People who don't have an issue aren't going to be as vocal as the ones who do. I ignored the forums for quite a while till I started getting bored while working.

First thing though, do you honestly believe that pirating is worse in the West compared to the East? While I love things about China they were and most likely still are the number one country in the world for piracy. This is nothing new for the company and yet they still make enough money to pay their teams top dollar.

No one knows except for those with Qidian on whether their prices will stick or not. They have hinted several times that they see numbers increasing, truthful or not who knows. But make no mistake, just like WW, Amazon, Fan fiction and now even Royalroadl with their Author Premium soon to release, they are all a business who are about making money one way or the other. If it's not sustainable you'll see a price drop and know you were right. Otherwise you'll see more premiums and know you're the minority.

Gamblejay Well, i guess westerners wouldn't mind the pricing system, but that isn't the same for the rest of the world. Buying power differs from nation to nation in great ammounts. To give you an example, i can buy 8kg potatos for a dollar here, so how much can you get for a dollar? That's the difference in buying power. This can be solved by making regional prices so that it's affordable for everyone, but then said westerners like you will probably get vocal about paying many times more than us and it's unfair...

Please guys give this systems chance because the total of premium chapter has not yet reach thousands chapters right ? Maybe they will implement something that will make these chapter more affordable or maybe they will release it as an ebook ....

          just crate multiple account/..problem solved

Tertium You’re being too naive. If we don’t say something now why would they change later? At the rate they’re going all the webnovels will go premium and reaching 1000 premium chaps is only a matter of time. They release anywhere from 1-4 premium chaps a day and we’re lucky to get 1 free chapter a day if even. I know monster paradise doesn’t even give even 1 free chapter a day after going premium. My greatest worry is that is that qi would block the later part of the story indefinitely unless you pay ss. Webnovels just aren’t worth investing into because they sacrifice quality for quantity in wordcount which while works for the east just doesn’t seem to fit in the west and I don’t want that mentality to stick either or others might start copying it and lower the quality of literature as a whole😰 I’m probably being an alarmist with that last remark but that doesn’t change the veracity of what I said. Even if this system works for qi in china this is the west and they should try to conform to their new target audience if just a little. It’s not like they really care for the west audience. Their main clients are the chinese. They just made a branch here when they saw people have interest and want to capitalize on it but aren’t trying to understand their readers. Whether it’s due to their lack of regard towards their new readers or lower prices they’ll take a hit either way. So they might as well choose the option that boosts their reputation. Just my thoughts.

At least right now, you get ~200 SS when you "invite" a new email account you create + add. If you need 12,000 SS that's just like....60 gmail accounts? Granted, your unlocked chapters would be spread across a few different accounts but unless you're fond of re-reading that shouldn't matter much. And if it does, you can just create 120 accounts...

I don't really mind paying but I rather have it at a fixed price instead, because at the very least you know what you are paying for. With spririt stones it flipflops to much where some cost 3 a chapter and some cost 10 so I feel that it can cause people to underestimate the price of novel. Essential misleading people of its price. I also believe if there was more competing companies in this field they would be more restraint. I wish it was more straightforward than misleading.

But what I am most curious about is why they don't use a monthly subscription?

Gamblejay The thing is, it is not sure we will actually see a price drop if it does not work properly. And the longer a system is in place, the harder it is to change it. If they shift to a subscription model now, it would not require much, but if they do it years down the line, people who have bought a lot of stones throughout that period may feel like they have been "cheated", which is never good press. Also, never once have I insinuated that they should not make money, they should, but though a reasonable model.

Also, when I talk about the west, i talk about the western market of online entertainment. I am mainly basing my opinion on having worked as a business consultant with several companies, and many have had trouble with their business models and trying to monetize. The best solution is normally to try and create a model to catch as many as possible. The current model is one where people like me (and you i assume), are the only viable customers as we can afford it, but many with low income/students (who is a large part of their market, as it is mainly young people reading), wont be able to afford it. You normally put people into 3 customer groups, who can roughly be translated to low, medium, and high revenue costumers (and then a 4th who never buy anything). With the current Qidan model, they are only appealing to the high revenue portion, which is often less than 1% of the customers. A way many companies gets around this, is for example to have multiple tiers of subscriptions, or offer many different "products" to accompany the main service (mainly seen in games). Qidan could easily do something similar, and I reckon they could even earn more than they currently do. They could keep all current SS systems, and then make an optional subscription of several tiers. For example, lets say 3 tiers of 5/10/15, where 5 gives you a certain number of chapters/spirit stones each day, and some additional vanity, like a badge on the forums/comment section, or the like. 10 to give even more chapters/SS and give a higher tier badge, along with additional energy stones and/or Power Stones. 15 bucks could then give unlimited reading, and an even higher tier badge along with the same/even more extra energy/power stones. They could then even in addition to that, add some vanity items, offer to sell complete e-books (basically just the exact same novels, but re-branded as an E-book, and even physical copies could be sold. These things would cost very little with the main product (the novel), already made.

It is possible that with the current system, some of the heavy readers (like myself), may spend 100+ dollars a month down the line, but those who tend to have that amount of some, also tend to have less income. Also, even those who can actually afford to pay that much, most likely wont as they simply can't justify it to themselves.

Zogarth1337 Man I just hope everything works out for both partys I because very much enjoy some of these novels. I hope qidian is listening

Gamblejay "If you don't like it then leave" is a flawed statement. If you leave, nothing improved until people notice a drop in sales due to the problems. If you stay and complain, they now have to acknowledge the flaws. The latter is more likely to get results than the former.

I want to read the novels, but this pricing formula is insulting. They go "oh yes we can translate 14 chapters a week for free" and then go "by the way, we changed it to 7 free chapters and 7-10 paid only ones". It's obvious that it could work for free or with ads; they've been doing it for like a year now.

Moreover, they have no obligations implied in this. They don't always release the same number of chapters, and there are translators who fall way behind. Same goes for quality: some translations and edits have poor quality, but you still have to pay for them. And yet they are still charging the price of a professionally edited book.

So I stay, and I complain. Because they are doing things badly, and I still have 3 non-premium books left, and I don't want them to go premium.

I think many of us just have concerns that we want the opportunity to pair a fair p ice for the product.

Alternatively the way things are going it’s not the case.

A simple analogy compare it to a professional sports game. The Yankees sell the the 3rd base sections seats for 200$-$300 dollars, they only sell like 20 percent of them and tons of them go unfilled at games. Everyone is saying hey guys charge a fair price and I’ll pay and support the team. Yankees are sitting there thinking yeh no thanks, sure if we charged $50 the stand will fill out every night but at $300 or so we make just as much money off the few rich suckers who will pay. Everyone else tough luck. Yankees are thinking enough time will go buy they the tickets eventually

GUNNY go to wuxiaworld they have some finished novel and ongoing one that are interesting

Glad to see the great discussions and information being shared.

The biggest thing I've learned is that everything can more or less be attributed to a system fundamentally grounded in greed/profit where self expression is only secondary. A system where word-count = money is flawed for the consumer. different culture different trends.

I think everyone honestly knows that there are almost no eastern novels(Korean/Chinese/Japanese) that DON"T have any instances of repetition or rephrasing, or they will have a loop they follow and the other commonly seen patterns that are not commonly found in western fiction (NOT saying these make inherently non-entertaining novels something doesn't have to be groundbreaking to be enjoyable. ex. Library of heavens path is literally the EXACT same story loop AT EVERY ARC/SEQUENCE yet its still one of the novels that I find quite funny and entertaining to read) but if you think "why is this the case" it makes sense with the simple phrase "word-count = money" thus things will be this way and they most likely won't change. You could I guess make the argument that if your going to market towards western cultures/english speaking cultures you should adopt a policy that would be used by them but you could make the argument that the market is there home turf so..

                          ¯_(ツ)_/¯

                          Krazyguy75

Gamblejay Except those books aren't priced on their word count. These novels contain so much unneeded drivel just to drive that word count up while real authors try to bring their word count down so there's less fluff and more story. If you want to compare 1 million words in these books with 1 million words on these web novels then you're already doing it wrong because the words aren't worth the same amount of story. One fight in BTTH takes like 5-7 chapters, random enlightenment for 2-4 chapters each, and then there's the explanations from side characters about every little thing that people don't care about.

Gamblejay The problem is you are expecting westerners to be sold on a Chinese business model. This site isn't targeted toward Chinese users.

Krazyguy75 Everyone that I've seen who says they hate the system brags about how they refuse to buy SS. So there isn't really a loss there anyways.

CJofNJ And thats how business works. There is a targeted audience, is Qidian going for full seats or are they trying to meet a quota to pay everyone and keep board members happy?

If they can sell 20 $200 books as compared to 100 $5 books I think I know which business model I'd take and which audience I'd focus on.
