I haven’t seen any coins being refunded to my account from trial reading in over a month even though I have been using coins for books that have been chosen. Do all coins from chosen books get refunded? And is the refund within 30 days after the book is picked or enters voting pool or some other time period?

Unless they've changed how the trial system works i think you have it a bit backwards. Its books that are not chosen and phased out of the pool that get refunded. No sense refunding coins for a book you're gonna pay to read....

Actually, I was right. Because the first 40 chapters become unlocked after the book is chosen, we are supposed to get any coins we spent unlocking the first 40 chapters of those books back. And that’s what the message about getting coins refunded says. Are you getting your back?
I always tend to get mine back at seeming random, I've yet to see any consistent logic to the system.

You are right, we are supposed to get all the coins spent on trial reads but you might have to put in a lot of efforts .
If you will ask them for the refund, you might be asked to share the screenshots of all the coins spent along with the count of coins spent on each trail read along with the deposit history of your coins.
