DFY is trying to let GXJ get used to him not being around. He is going to break her heart and they'll break up. Her time to replace him as the lord is drawing near. Once they break up, GXJ becomes the Left Celestial Master and replaces DFY.

About the power absorption, it's because of the body. If she stayed longer with that body, she'd become a monster (I'm not so sure about this because the MTL wasn't so clear). Any way, she needed to change bodies before she absorbed too much power and burst. She didn't know about the changing body part because DFY didn't tell her.

Because of power she keeps absorbing, she started feeling unwell. She complained about him not arranging their wedding like he promised and how he had been distant. DFY puts her soul back in her real body and tried to erase her memories. When she woke up, DFY didnt think that she retained her memories. Seeing how his plan failed, he called her by the name of the mermaid princess he was engaged to. He told her that he was trying to resurrect the princess in her body but didnt expect for GXJ to be the one. So they broke up.

Because of the experience of memory loss she had with Mo Zhao, she had protected her memories from having any loss in the future. That was why DFY's plan failed, but he didnt know that.

GXJ was so hurt that she used her life to destroy Mo Zhao (the fake DFY). When GXJ died, DFY blamed himself for it. LSY told him that GXJ would rather die than live apart from the person she loved. He took her body away and talked about the real reason he broke up with her. He wanted her to get used to being alone so that she'll feel less hurt when he disappears and she becomes the lord.

After some years, GXJ's spirit was floating around DFY. DFY's hair turned white. He carved different statues of GXJ. In her spirit form, DFY couldn't feel her or hear her. She was still mad at him. DFY dispersed into the air and memories of him were wiped out from everyone's mind. When GXJ came back, she was greeted as the lord. She asked about DFY but they didnt know him. She asked about the former Lord, but she was told that she had always been the lord. She ran everywhere looking for him. She went to the crystal palace and noticed that the name plaque in front of the entrance didnt have DFY's name. She went to the library and saw that all of the books he wrote were all blank. She picked up a stone and tried carving his name, but it kept disappearing. Memories of him were starting to fade from her mind also. Immediately, she carved out the poem that contained his name boldly on a stone, multiple times on multiple surfaces. By the time she was done, she no longer remembered him, but she felt like something was missing.

She took over as the Lord and took care of the lower bound. She still felt very unhappy as if she had lost something important, so her mood affected the realm.
