    • Title: The Black Heart
      Genre: Fantasy
Tags: Steampunk, dark humor, sword and sorcery, magic.
      Link: The Black Heart

Synopsis: What is The Black Heart? Thousands of people have tried their luck journeying deep into the desert sands, yet none have seen it. But it exists, for wondrous things happen in the desert. Wishes are granted, and lives are ruined; people die, and others still come back to life. The sands pulse, their thrumming vibration echoing through all the desert, and its inhabitants.

Countless travelers journey to the desert, all hoping to reach the heart- to have their wishes granted, or to seek their fortune. And Durn lives in the middle of it all, a lone man with his wondrous creations, surviving within the desert. Who is he, and what does he wish for?

A quick word: Set in a Steampunk fantasy world, it's not exactly your average sword and sorcery read. It's a story I wanted to enjoy writing; it's a black comedy(at least a wannabe one), and it tries to avoid cliche wherever possible. It's something of a self-aware book, without actually breaking the fourth wall. The main characters do not give two shits about ethics or morals, and there's a shitload of swearing too, don't say I didn't warn you. lol. So uhh, I'll shamelessly ask(plead) for reviews, and I can review you guys too, no matter what genre you do. So please review me and maybe add me to your library if you like the book lol.

        • Hi there, this is acriticalcynicalnihilistteapot,
You can just call me teapot.
After getting inspired by seeing Short, Light, Free, an aggregation of short stories from various authors, I thought, why not do something similar, only for Qidian original? (completely original idea lol) There's a lot that's possible, but I think it would work like an author showcase, where new authors put up short stories written by them, and credited to them. They can also put up a link to their main story that they're writing. As a sort of webnovel magazine, these short stories 1-5 chapters long, 500-10000 words long, they could serve as perhaps a forum for any new authors to bounce ideas off an audience, attract attention to their main stories, or even as a place to display new ideas in one shots, before proceeding to actually write them, to check how it would work out. We can also have little submissions upon how to write, et etc. I'm completely open to more ideas, please suggest some more. I'm entirely willing to do editing and a lot more, and for authors who have english as a second language, I'm willing to help work out the kinks in their language, because a native English speaker is likely a lot better than just a grammar checker. So what do you folks who are reading this at the forums think?

          FAQ

q: But teapot, aren't you just a scamster waiting to steal all our ideas and plagiarize it and take it for yourself you thieffff.
a: All stories will be credited to the original author. That's my no-plagiarism promise. The author may also give a simple author's message to be included in these stories. Besides, if these stories appear uncredited on the net, then all you webnovel enthusiasts can always petition webnovel to either remove the stories, or for me to credit it. I see no way this could go wrong.

q: But teapot, why should an author publish stories through this magazine? Why can't they publish it themselves?
a: An aggregation of stories is always certainly better than just a few standalone stories getting published. This way, once it gets popular, it would serve as a spectacular new way to highlight these stories.

q: Whats the name of the magazine?
          a: Read the title n00b

q: How can authors know if their story is good?
a: They can always check out the lovely comments section. More info on this coming up.

q: What's the release rate gonna be?
a: About once a week, every Sunday morning we should be capable of releasing a volume. Frequent story writers may even appear on the cover.

q: Are you gonna be making submissions as well teapot?
          a: Yeah no shit, sherlock.

q: Is this a good idea?
a: most definitely yes. YES. YAAAASSSSSSS.

So what do y'all think? This a good idea? Want to share thoughts and maybe suggestions? Want to submit a work? Feel free to do so! Share your stories with the world!

btw, I really don't know if I should be making a new thread about this, but I think this was an idea worth sharing.

          • Ying_Tao it probably just won't look good(but you can do it i believe). Try some free stock photo apps like flickr. They've got a really good database if you know what to look for, not to mention that you can use their images for free.

          • lone97 grammarly is fairly useful. The app works within inkstone's novel editor so you can correct it right there. give it a go, its useful

            • Ying_Tao as LetThereBeMagic did say, something darker would be awesome! You don't see very many dark novels out there, and the ones that used to be dark are all shit now(im talking about circus of oubeniel lol). I would love to try reading some of your work, being something of a dark humor fan here.

            • Ying_Tao definitely not. I assure you 100% that you sure as hell don't need to do that. Trust me, reincarnation has become a far more cliched and stereotyped premise these days than you could imagine. I'd say that what you need is something unique, and something different from all this. You don't need to go down the route of a secret 'grandpa' or device like er gen novels. reincarnation or isekai as the jap light novel crowd knows it, is a fairly shit way to start your story that makes it all the less unique. Of course, that doesn't make it automatically bad, it just makes harder to stand out in a genre that is already full of mediocrity. It's definitely not important, as a novel like Tales of Herding gods, or those Mao Ni novels seem to indicate. In fact I would say the reincarnation if used, needs to be used in a manner that ensures that it is relevant to the story Ex: Reverend Insanity, where reincarnation is a core element of the plot, not just something that is spoken of in the beginning and forgotten which is where 90% of novels screw up. IF you want to do reincarnation right, don't just write it in, and then forget all about it later on. (This is the principle of Chekhov's Gun. If you tell people that there is a gun in a chapter, then make sure that it goes off in a later chapter). A little off topic, I loved your story, it got me hooked right at the beginning, I would love to see where it goes. Just a bit of advice from my end, perhaps you might want to cut down a little on the overly flowery language, it doesn't seem to fit. Especially when you use something like 'with bated breath' when a woman is about to get raped herself. I should feel that perhaps saying something that communicates the message in a slightly less cliched manner might be better. Just me thinking out loud(i felt it was incongruous). Let it be though, it's your style, don't let me hamper it.

              • SweetsTomato I do want to include dialog, but I feel that too much dialog is terrible, and the Wuxia method of putting up near individual sentences is terribly annoying. But again, I'm always open to advice, and I already am trying to break up my paragraphs into pieces. And thanks for reading my story!

              • MasterRabbink
I find that certain pieces are terrible as whole chapter... But I'll see. I like light novels like circus of oubeniel or Dungeon Defense, where the chapters are hugeeee, and very fun to read as a whole, but not fun as separate pieces. as I said, I might do two chapters 5k each, or something like that. I dunno. But thanks for reading my novel anyway! I hope you keep reading it!

                • LetThereBeMagic aha, I will remember to do that. I figured that that might be a problem, but I never really was very sure of that. Then again, I feel sad breaking certain paragraphs into pieces, because i feel it ruins the flow; but thats just me being possessive :p .

ImperialDarkFrost thanks! I hope you follow my novel!

yayyyy thats a better reaction than I expected. I must pursue the dao of writing more diligently.
