As a reader I am happy to have endless options but what I need is better options for me. I don’t know about y’all but I am a female and I like interesting books. When I got tired of the same rhetoric of “weak-to-strong” cultivation brotherhood, I went to Gamer to cruising down the lanes of futuristic and action to magic/Magi to harem.... yes, you heard me. I read harem stallion novels as well. There will always be a gem within the rubbles of stones.

What I don’t understand is when it comes to romance, it is targeted at us females and the “romance” on here is a bad soap opera that anyone will just kill themselves if they are a part of it.

I must list out why I think so:

  1. The Male Lead is “cold” “perfect” “Dead inside” but somehow his “DEAD INSIDE” disease miraculously healed under the presence of the Female Lead.

  2. Female lead is a “beauty” “sexy” “clever” and “OP” but seems to have low self esteem and loves to torture herself with the same D___. Ya’ll know what I meant.

  3. Hissy Hussies. Idk why every female characters either secondary primary or thirdy. All of them have these urges to gouge each other’s eyes out due to the “oblivious” Male Lead’s charms. 🙄🙄🙄. I’m beyond just fed up at these stereotypical dumb bimbos ya’ll go crazy over. (Someone say something about this....convince me otherwise)

  4. The female lead gets raped a lot. 🤦🏽‍♀️💆🏾‍♀️ I don’t know who you trying to trick. You can try to trick yourself but when your in that position I think you need to seek help if you still think your man is still perfect and deserves your “undying love”. There is no way around it. Don’t romanticize an atrocious behavior. It is no wonder it has been a prevalent issue since the beginning of mankind.

  5. Letting me down with the serious oath “I don’t need to depend on him” There were some books about the betrayals of the Male lead and the victim has always gone back to that male lead and I don’t think there’s anyone out there that can do that. A book is a reflection of the world you wanna built. Do you wanna live in a made up world full of free rapists living with their victims and taking liberties of them? That’s some heavy taste you got there.

  6. Making excuses for him. IDK why author loves the Male lead so much that every BIG NO NOs is swept under the rug painted with glamorous descriptions of his handsomeness and OP-ness.

  7. Using drugs and alcohol to dilute the FACT RIGHT SMACK IN YOUR NOSE AND POKING YOUR EYES OUT: THE FEMALE LEAD WAS RAPED! YOU THINK IT IS STILL OKAY AND EXCUSABLE FOR HIM TO RAPE UNDER THE INFLUENCE?! THESE TWO ELEMENTS ARE WEAPONS USED FOR REAL RAPISTS. REALLY THINK ABOUT IT. IS IT REALLY OKAY AND EXCUSABLE. (WHY?)

There are more but my phone is about to die....

I’m sad that these so called romance novels are giving out wrong messages. I know I know these novels can be great but it can be harmful.

Let me know what you think.

If you need better options for you, it might be more helpful to list what options you are looking for rather than what you aren't.

IMHO, fiction is fiction--people can like what they like. The things you list are things a lot of people do like. Some of the things you like, other people would have on their diss lists.

This thread might have something you'd be interested in.

Just my two cents: I'm on a similar boat as you. I understand that some of these books are fantasies for others, but its a pretty disgusting imo to present abuse as romantic or girl hate as normal. I think this video sheds a lot of light on why novels with the troupes you've mentioned are problematic (for the romance bits anyway).

I'll add one more trope: the (supposedly) strong female lead, dragon lady boss, who is actually just waiting for a man to overpower her and make a woman out of her. I understand it's a business, and things like this sell (otherwise we wouldn't see recycled themes in movies, TV soaps, etc. HOWEVER nowhere else have I seen it so grossly used and abused than here in Webnovel! What's with the obsession with CEOs?!

I have read a lot of novels of all kinds, am binge reader...and the surprising fact is that I can read everything without getting carried away, maybe I just dont think inside, I am always thinking outside the box. Or maybe, because my mind is open to everything...I don't judge...I don't hate...I just read silently.

One thing I can say...the novels you may not like to read...is somebody's favorite cup of tea. In short, dont torture yourself, just go on with your life, read the novels you like and avoid the novels you don't like, easy as 123...okay?

I'm with systemmpreg . Yes, as many have said, we could move on to something else but I don't want another genre, I want to read a romance where the FL isn't suffering from Stockholm syndrome. There are quite a few books on their roster where the FL isn't raped and does not welcome the cold CEO back with open arms after he's behaved appallingly. Evil Natured Husband is one example, but it seems to be dead in the water.

I live in Seoul and right now drugging and raping women is all that's in the news. Here, and in Singapore, India, China, and Malaysia I know that it's a cultural thing to brush off rape because of victim blaming and useless cops, but Webnovel doesn't need to reinforce these beliefs. Young girls calling rape 'snu snu' is seriously tragic. I'd like to start reading without having to check Novel updates for rape tags and abuse spoilers so I don't get triggered. Women can be in relationships and enjoy sex. It doesn't have to be rape to make it acceptable. What century is this? Can we just get a consenting adults romance please?

If anyone has a good list, please do share as I would like to read a proper romance novel too. I high-key blame 50shades for this lol.

_Ocelot_ Burning Sun eh? Actually scares me even more that some fangirls are still defending their so-called idols

chonnie Never heard of the guy before, but I watched a few mins of that video out of curiosity. He's rather funny. XD And totally on point with all the abusive tropes.

_Ocelot_ Oh gosh, I was so upset about that whole scandal. D: I thought that it had gotten better over the years but nope... In addition, it's also sad that the offenders brought down people who weren't involved but were connected by affiliation, like the other members of the group.

systemmpreg I am glad you brought this up. Thank you too, _Ocelot_. The issue is not about reading prefrences, but drawing the line where it violates our fundamental values and sense of right and wrong. "Ladies' Pick" are targeted at women, and therefore saying that's what we really want! It's saying that all women, regardless of what they have accomplished, only dream of marrying a rich, powerful, handsome guy, even if it means tolerating bad behavior. Rape and abuse will never be right, even if it takes place in a fantasy world. And please, is "CEO" the only lead male trope out there??? Especially for women's literature? Are we that dumb? Am sure Chryiss would agree. Interestingly, male lead stories seem to present a more positive portrayal of women and romance, and that is why I prefer them.

My phone died....so I couldn’t say all I wanted to say so thank you all wonderful beautiful people who brought out the same issues I was trying to convey.

Yes I know people prefer those and yes I don’t. The issue is it is targeted towards female. I am disappointed because of this.

In addition, they put it under romance. Why? What is the definition of romance again?

I know it’s fiction but words are powerful, and a world existing with characters that have that pain playing inside of your mind living and breathing made up of words. It can be personal. It can become real.

systemmpreg Romance is romance, and there are all types. Just like your 'mpreg' genre.... (I personally don't agree with....) but it seems most of these females like the cold and domineering CEO type, probably because they're supposed to be the top of the food chain and only have eyes for the FL. Also the rape is the "I like/want you so much I couldn't control myself [, even though I control you all the time] ". These are probably females in real life who have the worst taste in men, as it shows in their fictional preferences.
If you want romance done right in these, read cultivational novels where the romance is secondary and usually normal.
Unprecedented Pill Refiner, Enchantress Amongst Alchemists, Stunning Edge, Insanely Pampered Wife, (most MistyCloudTranslations novels), etc. Another one I haven't read but watched the CDrama is Love 020. Literally perfect. I hate gaming works, but not only was that good, the drama was minimal and the relationship and romance was the quintessential example of the perfect modern day couple. The amount of trust between them was unbelievable, too. It's a short story on here by a different name.

Anyways, there will be many types of romance for everybody, and some could be what most people accept or what minimal people accept. To each our own. But, yeah.. wish there'd be less of the rapy CEO novels, but most females have bad taste in men apparently. Though if it was a Qing Dynasty/Republic era novel with someone leading a very successful business then (and its own equivalent of a CEO/President), that'd be a good change of pace. And if there are Imperial Japanese and spies, that'd just make it better. (Feel free to use this idea, anybody who sees this)

sandrine59123 my exact thoughts fellow reader I simply don't understand how the hell some of the novels generate so many votes to be in rankings and also if you see new novels voting system you can clearly see female MC ones receive larger no of votes compared to Male MC well it might have to do with that it's a daily task and many readers are busy or lazy and just go with first page which is FL ones .

YulongYuXianTaiyin One of the reasons why I started reading mpreg genre books is the frustrating way female mc are written and portrayed. They either are too strong that it don’t make sense to become weak towards their male counterpart or too weak that they become this cringey clinging female and become more of a secondary character. There are some romance about a clever female mc but then it turns bad when they become too dependent on their counter part.

The only c-novel with the female mc is A thousand Traussuers carriage or whatever it was. I forgot the title.

systemmpreg I'm honestly surprised that #1, 2, and 3 weren't rape, but I suppose if they were, the other 5 points would be more ignored. I do wish there were more (non-asassin) female cultivator or reincarnation novels, but it seems that they don't rank highly on Qidian because of their vapid female readership and "female" tag driving away male readers.
INEBM is one of the few novels I've managed to read that seems to avoid most of the awful traits, but it's still ongoing, so we'll have to see. I'm only worried that our FL may be the one raping the ML.

systemmpreg Yep. You've got the pain points covered.

I'm going to add that ethics is an optional feature in romances too. Seldom the option is taken.

Pss: I'm not a fan of the "I was off my face drunk when I had sex with you" trope. It's, frankly, a crappy cop out.
