can you guys name ridiculous things in xianxia? like their clothes barely burnt even after receiving a brutal attack or how their hair are still there (i mean most xianxia novels have people with long hair both boys and girls)

Tomoyuki most of the time it isn't mentioned. other than that, the enemy of characters can be stronger than them by tens. it's impossible for their qi to really protect them.

If you read Rebirth of Supreme Celestial Beings... there exists pills that make men have the ability to have babies. So, I've long decided that in xuanhuan novels, everything is possible 🤣

Well, how do the people even justify all the violence they do? I'd bet it's some kind of "Might is Right" bullshit but seriously? How long do they think society would survive if some person decided "Hey, this is wrong. I need to change this." and go full on train like a hundred years then proceed to bulldoze everything.

Lin_XiaoLong is that a Yaoi novel?
The weirdest one I’ve seen is, Bandits who tried to rape a girl got turned into women with yin bodies, then a evil Cultivator shows up and rapes them believing he found a lot of rare yin bodies like nothing... it’s just funny how he doesn’t question the absurd situation since it’s obvious treasure can’t easily be found like that. Another flat chested cultivator was pinched on repeatedly till it swollen to look like big boobs. Honestly everyone reaction was hilarious...

You know, I have been over this thread half a dozen times, and I literally cannot understand a single thing in it.

Can someone help a poor Westerner who's completely ignorant of this genre and its tropes get a clue?

Reinesse the novel is the strongest system check it out though idk if it's good or not. I stopped reading it after that scene and been to busy

Clowniac kind of bad at explaining, so here's the copy and paste from immortalmountain @ wordpress.

Wuxia (武俠 wǔxiá) – literally means “Martial Heroes”. Fictional stories about regular humans who can achieve supernatural fighting ability through Chinese martial arts training and internal energy cultivation. Themes of chivalry, tragedy, revenge & romance are common.

Xianxia (仙侠 xiānxiá) – literally means “Immortal Heroes”. Fictional stories featuring magic, demons, ghosts, immortals, and a great deal of Chinese folklore/mythology. Protagonists (usually) attempt to cultivate to Immortality, seeking eternal life and the pinnacle of strength. Heavily inspired by Daoism.

Comparison: If Wuxia is “low fantasy”, then Xianxia is “high fantasy”.
Xuanhuan (玄幻 xuánhuàn) – literally means “Mysterious Fantasy”. A broad genre of fictional stories which remixes Chinese folklore/mythology with foreign elements & settings.

Xuanhuan and Xianxia novels may sometimes seem similar on the surface. Look for the presence of Daoist elements (the Dao, Yin and Yang, Immortals, etc…) in the novel to easily distinguish the two – if they aren’t present, then it’s probably a Xuanhuan novel.

it's hard to believe that you've been on webnovel for so long & still don't know about xianxia :0000 unless you don't read translated novels?

                yaoyueyi

I haven't read a single translated page on this site, tbh. I'm also only superficially familiar with the precepts of Daoism, so most things tied to it, and the principles of cultivation generally, are completely lost on me.

Based on what you are describing, it seems like a lot of the Three Kingdoms era stories fall under Wuxia tropes, with the occasional Xianxia thrown in. Is that an accurate assessment?

Also, thank you for the very clear and thorough explanation! I appreciate it!

Clowniac hmmm if you were talking about the actual "romance of the three kingdoms" novel, it's kind of neither? it's a historical novel-- so it would be under the category of "历史" which is basically, history. (some do categorize it as a wuxia novel, but in my personal dictionary, it's not b/c at the time when it was written, the culture of wuxia wasn't well defined yet, & it doesn't share some of the main wuxia/jianghu themes) wuxia is more like sects, set in this setting called "江湖" jianghu, which is the martial arts world. this is a setting separate from the government/military. super famous examples are works by jin yong. xianxia, on the other hand, is like the cultivation stuff with sects/realms/and all that.
I haven't really read novels set in the 3 kingdoms time period besides the actual "romance of the three kingdoms" (which is such a classic), so I'm not sure what stories set in that time period would be categorized as-- i'd say if they were completely historical/realistic with some martial arts mixed in (b/c martial arts is real), then it would be history. if it had sects/jianghu/codes, it would be wuxia. if it had fantasy elements/cultivation/sects, it would be xianxia. if it was focused on immortals without dao, then it would be xuanhuan. it all depends on what the book is about, so a broad umbrella term wouldn't be that ideal to categorize them.

                    yaoyueyi

And like that, you've lost me. Lol.

I was thinking less of the actual Romance of the Three Kingdoms itself, and more a lot of media derived from it, like the Dynasty Warriors game franchise.

I think there are some fundamental things in these genres that are lost of me due to a core difference in culture. Not that I don't logically get it, but I don't seem to connect with them on a deeper level of understanding like I feel others do.

Everyone is beautiful all the time and I don't know if it's a translation mistake either, but everyone has deep eyes that shine stars, besides, everyone has the same hair, style and eyes, but somehow they seem to turn into transcendental beings. as they are described. Beyond the weird comparisons.

Most likely because I'm a Westerner who loves Orientals, so I love the classic Asian beauty and not the "modern" version that likes sickly white or pale skin. But all the characters, even those who are tanned, somehow take some pill or water and the "impurities" leave the body, making people whiter ?!

And being a black woman I feel very bothered by it! Hehehe! They are already so beautiful the way they are and they are getting ridiculous "impurities"!

However, I love the genre of this novel, so much so that I write about this particular genre because I like the possibilities!

Have you read Sexy Pistol? If so, you will find yourself getting pregnant because of a much more normal pill!

The weirdest thing I've ever read about Xianxian was that the cultivator spent 500 years or more meditating while his wife and friends got stuck with him in a maze. After cultivators building their own planet ... Worse the core of their Dantins was a planet! Ç_Ç That was Wow!

Excuse me for my lousy English!

Take_the_Moon It's not a translation mistake. Most of these novels are wish fufilment and power fantasies, so all the heroines are perfect, flawless beauties, and all the guys are hunks.

I don't really get the impurities part, but usually it's an excuse for the male protagonist to perform dual cultivation (basically sleep) with the heroine to "purify" her. It's really disgusting, really, especially since many of the stories resort to "justified rape" where the only way to save the heroine is to have sex with her or she'll die from the excess qi or impurities or whatever BS. As I said, it's blatant wish fulfilment.

Clowniac that's why I said I'm bad at explaining lmao :joy:
my point is that if you don't read these books, you wouldn't be able to categorize them, since I could explain to you all day about the difference between the three, except if you haven't ever read a wuxia/xianxia novel, you wouldn't ever be able to see how the categories truly work... if that makes sense?

                            6 days later

ThyUnknownSaint damn, i've read some chapters from that book and i think it's sorta familiar... thay novel is quite... uh. can't describe. but it's definitely not normal
