Is it a good idea to have a female protagonist on a male lead story or people around here expect the protagonist's gender to match the lead?

Well... Having two protagonist without any connection with each other is quite rare, usually either the female become the male lead's leading lady. If you decide to have two protagonist without connection then it would be quite hard to devide equal attention to both lf them. :)

MissCringeyAuthor i mean, a female protagonist taking the lead, without the romance. Being she the main character and focus of attention.

There are many novels with female leads without romance. It is not forced to have romance just because the main character is female.

If you want to write a novel where the main character is female, but there is no romance, then I think you should go for it, there is nothing wrong with it.

My story has 5 protagonists, and the real one is a female who doesn't even get introduced till like 2 volumes in. 3 of which are female, 2 are male. It's fun to mess around with a whole bunch of different characters and protags.

AxlSLL You can have what you like. It's your story.

Generally female lead = female reader. And same for male type. It depends on who you are aiming to be your reader.

Lara Croft in Tomb Raider is a character targeted for males. Males in BL are targeted for female readers.

My stories have male protagonists in stories aimed for and attracting female readers.
