Write in your synopsis that there is no romance and put tags showing there isn’t.
Its mostly automatically romance because it has an fl in it. It won't be pleasant if a girl is just in a fantasy world adventuring or just there fighting some sought of fantasy politics. That is boring as heck. So to stop the boringness/cut it down a little, romance will be invoved.
Wait what? Why the hell would romance get added just because the protagonist has ovaries? My fantasy book has exactly ZERO romance, maybe less than zero considering how my protagonist feels about elves and the other way around (Elves really do know they're just better than everyone else lol). I'll have to check and see if webnovel added that tag.
Female lead does not need romance to be interesting. It can be interesting without it.

I don't read a lot of stories with female protagonists in them, but the ones that I do don't necessarily rely on romance to carry the story.

Tomoyuki all those stories you listed are all in fact great. But the thing is, all those leads had a strong and precise goal in mind and the setting backs that up a lot. However, Most of those stories were made in the past, it's modern-day now and people need a little romance to make the story even more interesting. If you go onto any novel/comic website, romance Is always at the top with extremely high views. Most people crave romance nowadays and so, sprinkling in even a little bit of romance can make readers start to ship characters making them indulged and continue reading your story in hopes that their favorite characters can be together.

Dude, you should stop generalizing and base everything off your personal taste and opinion. Many stories with strong, indepedent female leads but no romance exist, and they continue to exist today. You want romance, good for you! But that's your personal preference. It's not a rule. There is no law stating that female-lead novels must automatically contain romance or they will be boring. You crave romance, but you are not most people. Don't impose your personal preferences on others.

Veronica8 Well, I guess that makes sense, except that romance isn't a super common trope for fantasy books, usless you count paranormal romance as some sort of urban fantasy, which I'm not sure is accurate at all. I get the whole B-Story relationship angle and having depth to characters part. Well, I better make sure I make it crystal clear my novella doesn't have any smoochy smoochy, I'm not switching the protagonist's gender. Danae Whitebirch is not a dude lol...
I'm glad I read this, as I've been ignoring all female lead stories as I'm not into romance. This really needs to be fixed.
