  • Why are fantasy female-led novels automatically "fantasy romance"????

That's it. It's pretty fucking annoying, as someone currently writing a story with a female MC that does NOT involve romance. Can't therìy make a separate tag for fantasy romance or smt???!!!

oh so that's what it was. I initially wanted mine as fantasy only with no romance involved too. But when it showed up as "fantasy romance", I just assumed it comes with a package so i played around a little bit with mine and add a sprinkle of romance just to satisfy the tag but it's good. hehe I'm adapting slowly

Webnovel puts female lead tags automatically as romance no matter what. It is honestly annoying. I don’t read female lead, but I know not all female lead is romance.

Write in your synopsis that there is no romance and put tags showing there isn’t.

Its mostly automatically romance because it has an fl in it. It won't be pleasant if a girl is just in a fantasy world adventuring or just there fighting some sought of fantasy politics. That is boring as heck. So to stop the boringness/cut it down a little, romance will be invoved.

Wait what? Why the hell would romance get added just because the protagonist has ovaries? My fantasy book has exactly ZERO romance, maybe less than zero considering how my protagonist feels about elves and the other way around (Elves really do know they're just better than everyone else lol). I'll have to check and see if webnovel added that tag.

Haruka_Yusuke02 Alien. Aliens. Alien 3. Alien: Resurrection. Alien: Isolation. Before you can say they are movies, go check out Alan Dean Foster's novelizations.
Resident Evil/Biohazard 3: Nemesis. I'm talking about the novelization by Stephani Perry, not just the games.
Oh, what about Terminator 2: Judgement Day?
And then you have Lara Croft. Or Hua Mulan (I'm not tallking about the Disney movies, I actually mean the original Chinese story).
How about Sisters of Battle stories from Black Library? Celestine. Rose in Anger. Requiem Infernal.
Oh yeah, what about Munou na Nana? Or mahou shoujo stories?
Never mind that. You want classic fantasy? Alice in Wonderland. Wizard of Oz.
I don't read a lot of stories with female protagonists in them, but the ones that I do don't necessarily rely on romance to carry the story.

Haruka_Yusuke02 Doomsday Wonderland. A fantasy novel without any romance. And it is far from boring, she meets attractive guys, but she is too busy surviving to really care about them.
A female lead does not need romance to have an interesting story. In a lot of cases I have read, the romance takes away from the story.

Tomoyuki all those stories you listed are all in fact great. But the thing is, all those leads had a strong and precise goal in mind and the setting backs that up a lot. However, Most of those stories were made in the past, it's modern-day now and people need a little romance to make the story even more interesting. If you go onto any novel/comic website, romance Is always at the top with extremely high views. Most people crave romance nowadays and so, sprinkling in even a little bit of romance can make readers start to ship characters making them indulged and continue reading your story in hopes that their favorite characters can be together.

An huge example of this The Abandoned Empress and Who Made Me a Princess.

Haruka_Yusuke02 ...made in the past. You must be joking. Did you not watch Terminator: Dark Fate just last year? Or Alien: Covenant 4 years ago? Hey, what about the Resident Evil 3 remake this year? And Alien Isolation was produced in 2014. That too far in the past for you?

Also, the Sisters of Battle stories from Black Library are recent. Requiem Infernal was published just last year.

Also, Munou na Nana has an anime airing right now. I haven't even mentioned Hanyou no Yashahime, which is also airing right now. And the mahou shoujo genre...

Dude, you should stop generalizing and base everything off your personal taste and opinion. Many stories with strong, indepedent female leads but no romance exist, and they continue to exist today. You want romance, good for you! But that's your personal preference. It's not a rule. There is no law stating that female-lead novels must automatically contain romance or they will be boring. You crave romance, but you are not most people. Don't impose your personal preferences on others.

              LVTeacherman This is Webnovel.

In WN view, females only want romance (cough, splutter, spews guts).

Needless to say I'm not a fan of this catalog classification. Especially if I were to write a Joan of Ark type story that doesn't have romance at all. There goes chances for readership.

                Tomoyuki

I think what the poster is saying is that nowadays publishers are expecting to see or demanding for romance of some kind if the targeted reading audience is females.
Because romance is what is predominantly popular across the catalog for this demographic.

Veronica8 Well, I guess that makes sense, except that romance isn't a super common trope for fantasy books, usless you count paranormal romance as some sort of urban fantasy, which I'm not sure is accurate at all. I get the whole B-Story relationship angle and having depth to characters part. Well, I better make sure I make it crystal clear my novella doesn't have any smoochy smoochy, I'm not switching the protagonist's gender. Danae Whitebirch is not a dude lol...
