I'm curious about how the authors that join the WPC can post their stories so fast as soon as the contest begins.
Like by the time the contest post appears on my page, there are already people with novels participating, how do they do that, or did they just casually had written a theme related story and never posted them?
Is there somewhere else were you can learn in advance the theme?
Or do they just dish out four chapters in a couple of hours?

You can see the theme of writing contests before they are announced.
Just click the megaphone icon in the writing session on mobile. Once a contest reaches zero days, WN shows the next contest but they don’t announce it until later.

I would say between seeing the contest early enough to where you could write 3-4 chapters in a sitting of 5-6 hours and release just to get a head start, and of course having unreleased material that fits said writing contest. What appeals to many authors about the writing contests are that you not only get a contract that comes with X amount of featured slots, but just by simply placing in gold, silver, or bronze, you also receive an additional amount of prizes which could help further push said series up the rankings if done correctly (such as additional featured slots).

I have joined a handful just because I sometimes do my own writing sprints using a random topic and instead of privately freewriting so to speak, it makes more sense to join the competition and potentially place. The only issue is that WN has a very poor track record when it comes to giving the authors who deserve gold a lower place seemingly for no reason. I have seen books place silver or gold that was ranked not even in the top 10 in competitions and those in the top 3 not getting what they deserve even with a ridiculous amount of support similar to the voting system for new translated novels to be picked up by staff.

So all and all, I have seen people do well with writing competitions and using that to skyrocket other original books like the current #1 original JS Manga or the success AuthorWiz had with his Reborn series that was originally written for a WPC. But, I have also seen people rage quit WN in general from not placing where they deserve. (Including authors who would write like 8-10 chapters per day during the competition to not even reach bronze) So if you are planning to enter, just know these little aspects that go along with it.

      Hope this helped,

Lonely_Neet The ones that typically post so quickly and upload many chapters are old authors. They mostly already have drafts for some stories in their sleeves. Once a suitable prompt appears, they edit their drafts and post them.

I must have been an exception then. I started like the day after the WPC started, due to being convinced to try it.
I had the week off from work, so I ended up writing 22 chapters in one week. Posted one per day and ended up winning.
I've been writing for a while, but not known because I hide in the shadows. Even rejected the gold contract offered because I literally wrote the whole thing for fun and just ended it cause I had to return to work (which pays much better than any contract anyway)
I probably averaged like 2 hrs/ chapter when I worked on it.

Yeah I saw that back during the turn over of rewards. Two to three of us were neck and neck for top votes yet first second and third were rejected and first place went to the fourth ranked.

Haven't been even slightly interested in taking part in another of the contests, especially seeing how female leads get at minimum 3 to 4 winners for every rank every contest, but male leads are lucky if even one book places per tier.

Kinda screams someone with an agenda is in charge of the WPCs and they either have a mass hate on for male lead stories, or are setting an obscenely high bar for placements on that side.

While I don't know how exact WN grades the WPC, I have seen them throw out entries that appear botted to the top, or if the quality is obviously bad. Not sure how far down they go with looking over entries, but maybe there were some that caught their eye even though they didn't have massive stone support (which we all know favors veterans that already have some following). They had supposedly claimed that their judging wouldn't rely on purely stones anymore.

Also, since they started doing the gold/silver/bronze tiers, they've dropped announcing those who don't accept their contract in a timely fashion. This was the case for the last one I participated in. I didn't take the contract, so they left a gold tier spot blank where mine would have been.

Also, have you seen how much fewer entries there normally are for the male lead, compared to the female lead topic? That would explain some of the imbalance.

Perhaps they really write fast early but lose steam when they write it. I would not dare write two or three stories all at the same time. LOL. You can get mixed up the plot.

In my experience, it's just sprint after sprint in the WPC, which is why most, if not all entries are dumbdumb poopoo.

You don't really have the time to edit when you're up against a clock.

For me (during this last WPC), I started writing after seeing the prompt and just low-key rushed 4K to even get past the new novel vetting process. But in the past, I have tried to fit a few existing drafts to a given WPC.

Once the juices kick in its easy to write 5k worth of words in one day or sitting. I wrote 25k worth of fresh content during a WPC. Most over five days.

To add, it helped that I wrote to an outline. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to have churn out as many words. And I was in the mood to write at that time.

These prompts are kind of easy to tackle the more you do them and a method and routine is established. More experience equals faster chapter rate.
