Calm_Spirit Even though they claim they try to improve, it's hardly visible.
Just browsing through the novel reviews and found its still skewed. The star system completely has no credibility. Every novel including the trashiest trash has similar rating score.
There are many fundamental problems that need taking care of.
Beyond the Language competition....hahaha. Hopefully the selected ones are amassing chapters... Best case scenario.....

For all who are trying to ask for a subscription, I believe it is better suited for Wuxiaworld.com than Qidian.
Netflix has a huge customer base and they are burning money at this moment. They buy materials.
Likewise, WW is rumored to buy translation rights from the publishing company and translates them. They then divide the income based on page views (or that's what I have heard). Their income is also heavily dependent on patreon. As they are a group of translators like a group of friends, a subscription model is very appropriate for them and we can expect a future Crunchyroll or Netflix style model from them. Also, they control the number of novels translating and prefer to choose quality ones.
(Netflix is huge, while novel community is not so now)
I also recently got a hint that they want to install in site Patreon like system instead of using an external site. So there is a high chance that we can see patreon model release and locked chapters in WW (similar to premium but with more tiers.) Also a currency that has no monetary value but promoting novels.
So as a result of webnovel.com the competitive spirit has been ignited. Just they are really slow at it.
As for webnovel.com where new novels are introduced and translated each week, this is tough. They have a huge novel base and catalog which costs ton more $$$ if the rumored $30-$40 pay per chap is true. Then the translators get a cut of the premium revenue as well? They are at the customer gathering period but they need money. Instead of a flat rate subscription method, they want to use popular novels earn money which can cover for the growing translation salary paid. (Assumptions from rumors).
I want numbers. I want to know how big the reader base is. Based on the Promotion stone voting and app story downloads, I would like to assume there are about 20,000 or more active readers.
But many more features are yet to come.

The android app store shows 1,000,000 downloads. and 25,000 reviews.
App is one of the best things if not the best feature offered by webnovel.com.
Which is phenomenal considering the app, just the app made this community known more. I am not sure about IOS side. And more and more people are joining every day. A growth which is noticeable from powers stone vote increase (even after considering more people lvl up and getting more stones than before).

KingBiBiK Don't think it can be publicly revealed (nor do I know the actual numbers) since the company is listed. However, it's pretty sizable.
The official numbers that can be announced is according to China Literature's earnings report for FY2017 that was announced yesterday.
"By December 31, 2017, we had built up a library of 124 titles on Webnovel, and attracted 6 million cumulative visitors."

Honestly i don't mind the premium chapters. But honestly think about it i know they're in this to make money. (Since that's what all companies are for us damn consumers who bitch and whine all the time) But honestly when some books just 3-4 months back we were getting 12-20 chapters a week for free. Then premium came in with only 1 free a day? (That's a big fuck you from qidian to us readers)
I won't pick a side i'd rather stay neutral. (Thankfully there is only 1-3 premium books i read daily) So my wallet isn't being under a constant roast to drain my cash. But at least you could've still kept it the same no? most books being 2 chapters/daily. And than premium gets 1-2 extra daily. That would cause a LOT LESS BITCHING from everyone. But I'm not a company manager or someone trying to make a living off this so my opinion and views are worthless :3
OT but similar. Even for non premium members would be more than happy to get 2 chapters free through monday>friday. Anything extra would have to be unlocked with SS.

KingBiBiK You should not have increased chapter release to 14-21 per week then decrease to 7 as free and the rest as premium. (Even after considering patreon chapters, this could be controlled)
Like a story, there should be a progression. Imagine starting as 7-10 chap a week.................then you introduce this premium system where you can now get additional chapters with SS purchase. People will be grateful.
TearsOfRose That's the only problem I have. Even if it is marketing, it is not fun to see something you used to get free and easily go restricted.
They should have reduced the chapter first and slowly increase it with premium introduction.
Or they could announce "We are going to give you this many chaps during the first 6 months as a promotion." or something.
I don't mind premium or paywall, since I understand they want to earn money and I want authors earning as well.
But I do not support the rate the chapter is charged currently. So I can wait and binge later. So there is no reason for me to whine.
The premium for free is way better than the paywall all of us expected.
They want to sell chapters ? No Problem BUT make sure to give the readers a good quality translation.
Slapping premium price tag on shitty quality translation are dick move. This would make precedent that releasing half assed mtl to boost your chapter release speed are acceptable. When that happen the entire translation community would infected with speedy yet trashy translation.
It's been five years since i started reading chinese webnovels and honestly i was sick of the usual translation rate of 7 chaps per week of most of the novel on WW.
And when qidian(webnovel.com) came into the business and offered a translation rate of 25 chaps per week, i immediately became its loyal supporter. But like they say in novel ' A bucket of cold water' was poured on me when the translation rate was decreased.
So after 5 years i finally became sick of waiting for 24 hours for just 1 chapter which i have to unlock after watching a 30 sec ad, and now i have decided to learn chinese.... Hah solution to all problems, unlimited novels, no premium chapter sh*t, no worries about the translation rate or its quality.... And its not gonna take more than a year

KingBiBiK Nice. I feel like everything you've said is pretty sound and fairly comprehensive; it certainly encompasses the upsides and downsides of the system as well as however I may have felt about it before. It's truly enlightening to get your perspective :)
