Shubhangi_Kene In short... that poor guy is going to have to wait 5 freaking years without sex. Do you really want to do that to your favourite character ? And have him go through puberty again ? Poor man.

Sex In Novels: Helpful Opinions
d_elfe Well, it might just keep readers waiting and anticipating too. Might be good to, you know in some novels the leads get it on to early that it seems surreal.
Shubhangi_Kene I was just joking :) But this set aside, it all depends on how you treat the subject, and manage to write it. You can use humour or drama, as long as your writing is good, it can work. Good luck and all the best !

Thank you for this thread Sara. You're awesome
I write good romance scenes, but sex scenes have just been one torturous bit to delve into for me (please don't ask why) So I admit, I've avoided writing actual sex scenes for the most part.
The problem though is most of my romance/ makeout scenes are real sweet, emotional and passionate, so now my readers are craving or expecting awesome sex scenes!
I don't know how long I thought I could dodge it. Trust me it's necessary in my story. I might just be burned at the stake for not including sex scenes, or worse, my readers could desert the story.
I honestly get frustrated when I read a good romance book and naturally expect some sex at least at some point, but the author just drags me on and on with nothing. I don't want to do that to my readers, so thank you so much for raising this topic.
I'm learning a lot from this thread. I'm so grateful for that
dvces happy to help

I know I'm late in this thread, but I've only gained the courage to write anything in this forum recently.
Thanks for this thread! :hearts:
This is a subject I truly struggle with in my writing. My IRL culture treat sex as a taboo subject, and it's not easy for me to stop seeing it that way, although I want to, and I try...
I struggle a lot with point 3, I've pushed myself to write sex scenes before then kept deleted them. Luckily there's no chance for my family to read my work since none of them read English at this level.
I want to be able to write sex scene at the same level I write gory scenes. (Which I have no issues with, I write dark fantasy and there are plenty of those.) But I keep dancing around the subject, getting close to it, touching it, then end up running away again.
How do you get passed the embarrassment? This awkward feeling of "What will the reader think of me when they read this?" I know that sex is a part of life, but how do you stop treating it like a stigma?
I'm not expecting a magical answer that'll solve all of my problems with it, I'll work on it and get there eventually.
It's one of my major issues with writing, I don't want to self censor myself, I hate it. The more I write freely, the better I feel about my work.
Either way, again, thanks for this thread and the material, I found it extremely helpful!
Selene97 No problem dear I’m happy to help, and I wish you luck on your endeavors
If it helps at all, look into art, especially old/ancient art. Every country has a painting, statue, or sculpture of naked people. Sometimes in the literal act. Sex is ingrained in us as a species to live. Humans aren’t the only animals that have sex for pleasure, but the depths and capabilities of our expression of feelings makes the act uniquely beautiful for humans(except for unwanted abuse, etc..).
I try to see it not just as an act of physical contact, but as a form of expressive art when translated to paper. Sex scenes can be written in a variety of ways, including limited description of the actual physicality. You can always try to focus on the character(s)’s inner thoughts and emotional state, and make the physical description supporting details.
Example:
As his hand tenderly caressed the inside of my thigh, my body responded against my own wishes. William had always….(next couple paragraphs about how he had emotionally affected the FL).
As William slipped his had upward, my back arched into him on instinct. A low groan escaped him, which surprised me. Will wasn’t open about his emotions….(Next paragraph or two can be examples of close moments the two MCs have had together).
And if you are uncomfortable with describing the actual act, fade outs at the end of the chapter leave the reader free to imagine. Just make sure to paint the picture leading up to the fade out. I hope this helps hon Good luck in your writing!
You can always try to focus on the character(s)’s inner thoughts and emotional state, and make the physical description supporting details.
This one is a really good advice for me! Since I do write in first person with a high focus on the MC's thoughts, feelings, and moral dilemmas. So it's a good place to start.
The pair of examples are also great to go on and do my own thing from. This is the area I usually lack, and the part that make me cringe each time I try and write one of these scenes. But you weave it directly with emotions, especially in the second one, it something I should try when I feel I can get close to it again.
I didn't think you could help me more with this, but you did! Thanks!
