what make angst better?
Betrayal? Lying? Death? Ghost lover or family member? Memory loss? Facing chronic deceas?

What I like about angst when it comes to fantasy novel is the betrayal part.
Imagine, writing a story with the MC, starting as a villain pretending to be a good guy.
Later on, MC got close with the lead character. Become close until half story, starting to become good, want to change for the better. For the human and the demon side.
Do many things. Save human, save demon, create many changes in the academy they are staying. Helping many people.
That is, until people start to see that the MC is a demon without the MC knows about it.
All the friends that have been together, fighting, facing problem together with the mc ,start to planned on how to catch the MC. Some hesitate, but others convinced them into it.
The lead character didn't say anything to oppose it.

And the betrayal start.

I like this.
Especially if the MC is female and the lead character is also female. ( Friendship is magic).
If the lead character is male is also good. But, if you make them together in the end, I'll be ready with katana on my side, ready to slash.
If the MC is planning a reveng, suddenly a guy appeared and you turn the novel into romance, I'll be ready with two katana, ready to stab and slash.

Carciphones_02 This is going to sound generic, but I like the combination of all the aspects you mentioned.
Betrayal especially when the MC does it himself. The anguish falls on the reader's lap, and that's introspective.

Death when it involves the most charismatic, or even overpowered, secondary character.

Ghost lover or family member makes the dilemma of liking or disliking the character involved in the plot very cool. Generating post reading feelings is a lot of fun.

Memory loss and Facing chronic deceases I use moderately and a little flexibly. For example, in Memory loss I usually assign a future information for both the MC and the reader giving space for this introductory "no memory" in the story to serve as a pretext for whatever plotwist I wanted to add, givin space to alter the story in the future if I find a better way. In the case of illness, I like to attribute it to the use or possession of some power, which limits some of the character's attitudes when they become overpowered, making them more human and more likely to empathize with the reader. Besides putting him in the dilemma between using the power and saving the life of a loved one even if it costs his own life. (It adds to the idea of the "loved one" being a traitor, generating more drama and anguish for EVERYONE) =P

RodzZ It doesn't have to be fantasy. But, I like your understanding and the general knowledge of what makes Angst better.

When all the tags I said is put on someone really close to the MC, we will wish for their happiness, loyalty, love, relationship and best, the happy ending.

Seeing all of this is what caused all their hope to dissappear really make me cry.

For example, I cried for this one shot manga about a girl who play pianist. She don't like piano because she feel like her mother force her to play piano to get her husband attention. She decide to stop playing piano but met a cheerful mysteryous girl.

The girl don't want to go home because of mysterious reason. They become closer. The piano girl decide to run away from home. They both live in the abandoned bus near a lake.

Bla bLa Bla. The mysterious girl is long dead. She's a ghost.

      Very sad.
