I thought it would be nice to start a discussion for writers and readers alike. This is my first time posting a discussion, so forgive me if I do anything wrong.

My question is,

What do you like to see on webnovels? What do you dislike?

This can range from cliches, romances, character archetypes, genres, etc. Since I'm writing a novel now, I would like to see what I can avoid or add when writing, so it would help a lot.

If you do end up responding to this thread, please elaborate on why you think or feel that way, so other writers can improve on their story. Thank you. :D

I loathe power-ups that aren't relevant to the plot and don't add anything to it.
I think Harem is a very polarizing subgenre so just by having it in your book a lot of people will not read it entirely.
I dislike when villains who are supposed to be smart/powerful turn into dummies in front of the MC.

As for what I like, sci-fi is a soft spot of mine but unfortunately I haven't read a sci-fi webnovel that really resonated with me.
Novels with comprehensive world-building are also great( like I want to know what empire borders the MC's nation and why they are at war and their shared history and trade volume and stuff)

Venusean I agree with all your points, especially the first one! It’s annoying to see power ups be randomly added to be used once, and never seen again.
I also enjoy worldbuilding in books, too, that expand past the world the MC lives in and throughout their entire nation and so forth, because it really brings depth to their lives. Too bad it’s extremely hard to implement such in a good way, without info dumping or making the story a drag.
    Thanks for replying (:

Venusean But most of the author's still get the advice not be an over or underwriter putting them underpressure of not overdoing anything. And most of the time the overwriters are criticized the most resulting in many new author being underwriters.
And most of the time romance or action is the focus of the author resulting in them not taking efforts to show the taxation system of the fantasy kingdom or complex relationship between the kingdoms.
Well sometimes a large group of readers themselves don't like the info dumping some authors do that literally has nothing to do with plot.
So overall sometimes it's the writing advices or writers-readers responsible for the books
