I've been an avid reader of translated works for years now. I started with Anime, eventually finding myself into Manga, then reading the translated novels to continue those mangas, eventually finding webnovel/qidian's works. Back then, what we hated was monetization. Us readers thought it was ridiculously expensive (still is) but we paid. Because we paid for professional work. Fast forward to now. Summer of 2021.
What went wrong? I just went through the newest reviews on many popular translations that are ongoing. Example being 'My Senior Brother is Too Steady', 'Warrior's Promise' and other long standing works. All of the newest reviews are the same. 'After chapter ___ the translation quality took a deep dive. Genders are he/she on every character, names are messed up, etc.'
All of these reviews started coming in around September of 2020. If anyone remembers, back then, they just swapped from 60 chapter trial reads to 40 chapter trial reads. Which brings me to trial reads. Oh my, the beauties we see in trial reads now a days. They are MTLed, and edited in an attempt to westernize them. No fixes to translation, all that is changed is names, looks, places, and other common terms. Half the terms get missed anyway, making a jumbled mess of translation. I can find better quality on MACHINE TRANSLATION SITES. Webnovel, are you for real? Your 'professional' translators, are being outdone by MTL sites. And they have more chapters! At least they are consistent! Has anyone read the live streaming dragon novel in trial read this week? It's a mess! The entire thing looks like a robot verification test! Did Webnovel lay off its entire staff? What is going on??
