  • What do authors get from locking chapters?

Okay, so that title sounds like a self-entitled prick complaining about not having totally free novels, that's not what I mean. Let me explain real quick.

We all know that web novel stopped giving the three daily free passes you could get from power stone votes, energy stone votes, and check-ins, and essentially made it impossible to read locked chapters unless you pay(I heard that there are still free passes if you use the app, but I haven't checked so I can't say). I know everyone's pissed, but ‘fighting back’ by pirating the novels just doesn't sit right with me. My question is: do authors get anything from locking chapters and when readers pay or use coins to unlock said chapters, would it in any way support the author? Or does it all go to webnovel?

Yes, we do but it takes a lot of coins to earn something from it. The coins are currency for us. They get turned over to actual cash when readers use them in gifts, chapter unlocks, etc. However, it's pretty difficult to make much from the coins bcz WN takes 50% of our earnings which I do find to be too much. But the simple answer to your question is yes, we earn from locking chapters when readers use coins to open them. Just that unless you have a massive fan base spamming you with coins, you legit make nothing.

And for the record, the percentages WN take are LOWER than a traditional publisher whose book you buy in a bookstore or on Amazon.

        Aucheras Im not asking how much an author makes, just if the coins spent on a novel make up a part of that pay. I just wanted to make sure that authors actually get something out of readers using coins and real money to unlock chapters. If it was just webnovel getting something out of it, I'm not about to support that. But it sounds like authors do get a reasonable amount out of it, so then I can feel like I spent my money well.

            Although I can't speak for all of the authors on WN, I can say that your support helps some of us put food on our tables, or roofs over our heads. And we definitely appreciate it.

            As an aside, piracy hurts everyone but the pirate, who makes ridiculous revenue from selling user data. AKA your data. You should avoid them for your own sakes.

              I did not even notice that it changed!! I was always wondering why I didn't get Fast Passes these past few days!!
              Do points also expire? And are Fast Passes cheap or not??

                ThyUnknownSaint Fast passes cost 2000 points when I checked yesterday. Also, you can only buy them with points, rather that points or coins like everything else in the store as far as I can tell. You can also get points for time spent reading, but I don't know if that aplies to both PC and the app, or just one of them.
