I have a question about Chinese culture after reading IRaS.

The current story arc is about playing GO in order to appease future father in law. Father in law is very biased against people in the entertainment industry, and has decided that they are entirely unsuitable for his daughter. The daughter in this case is an adult and an accomplished professional who is very sure of her own judgement.

Now for the question: When faced with a parent who decides that the one you love is not suitable, do children simply put up with it, or do they ever tell the unreasonable parent to get lost and mind their own business? If it was happening to me, I would tell the parent that while they are entitled to their own opinion, they should not think for a moment that they have any right to decide my future. What is the reality?

Really depends on the children. Most asian children raised in the west are usually more willing to disobey parent for love.

I've always found "I'm Really A Superstar" a difficult pill to swallow. The story is about a man that steals other people's ideas and passes them as his own for a good percentage of the work. It's literally a story about a super nationalistic Chinese man who feels special for stealing intellectual property from his previous dimension and passing it as his own while slapping his chest and screaming how awesome China is... as long as the censor isn't censoring him.

It makes me feel uncomfortable because that's a general stereotype view of China from people outside of it: China steal everyone else's content and ideas.

        Hmm... "go" huh?
First thing I thought when I read IRAS put go is "Hikaru no Go" 😂😂😂😂 LoL

Btw, instant about it I more concerned about how IRAS would be????!!!

Is the author finally get permission for continue this story?
        Please.... Someone tell me!!!!!

The reality is things like that still happen in Asia. I know a couple who had to separate because the guy's parents did not like the girl. They were highschool sweethearts too, and was a seriously cute couple. I don't know what the boy's parents were thinking.

The girl is sweet, very kind, smart too, and her parents were rich. Her family owned a culinary arts college and a few businesses. And we're talking about them living in the capital city where they live in a bungalow worth millions.

I only got to know her and her boyfriend in college, but they were friendly with me from the get go. I witnessed her and her boyfriend interacting like old married couple, so in tune with each other. So cute. We were all accounting students so we saw each other quite a lot.

Then a few years later, we're done with school and I heard they broke up. The boy's parents were against their relationship. And the boy was going to further his studies in UK, so he took the easy way out and left her. I thought they were done, but then the girl also got a chance to study in the UK. (It was ACCA and United Kingdom is the best place to study it, but admission is limited). So yeah, she said they were together again there. Away from his family it's easy to rekindle their love i guess. Did not mean he would not leave her again when his family found out.

Now she had given up on the relationship. His family was hell bent on not having her as daughter-in-law, and he is a fillial son, so what could she do? She came back home from UK all alone. Argh, I'm so sad when i heard it. This happened just a few years ago.

LetThereBeMagic Hmm. In December 2017, I met a man who lived in Shanghai the previous year while he studied Mandarin. His take was a little different. He informed me that, though women were supposedly 2nd tier to men, the trend had changed in the big cities. Because of cultural proclivities and historical gender selection, there aren't enough women. So, a woman in Shanghai has her pick and the choice attached to said demographical imbalance.
Moreover, he mentioned a strong proclivity of women choosing to date and marry foreigners.

Ataroth I've had similar thoughts. But we have to recall that the world he is currently in is a game, and who would not exploit the rules of a game world? If the novel ever does reach completion, it would involve the game world dissolving, and MC returning to his regular life as an unknown.

LetThereBeMagic Yes, this makes me sad also. You get just one life, so I cannot understand why anyone would choose to live it for their parents instead of for themselves. I was hoping with this post for somebody to explain why the "filial" choice makes sense for them.

Pizza Parents have final say in most things, regardless of whether their child is young or grown-up.

I see that this is true, but I'm having trouble understanding why. Does it strengthen the family if all decisions are top down?

The basic logic behind this is that in China, your parents are your sponsor. Without parent’s support, it’s extremely hard to afford car and house. So most parent buy house and car for their children. It’s reasonable for your investor to “give advice” to your behavior. Of course you can try to find husband/wife without house and car, good luck to you.

manapotion It's as @hoho2000hoho mentioned. Unlike in the West, most children in Asia aren't independent. While this is changing, most are still dependant on their parents. More & more are taking up jobs, etc. to support themselves & go after their goals, though the number of such children is still less overall.

And due to this, most children just get used to nodding their head at whatever their parents say, even after they grow up. There are rebels, but it doesn't help much with most relatives, neighbours, etc. trying to shame them for not listening to their parents.

manapotion That's an insightful point of view, though perhaps the certainty that the world is a "game world" might be less solid. Personally, I've never felt the MC was in a "Game World." He merely has an ability, solely attached to himself, that allows the progression of personal abilities in the form of a roulette. The individuality of the ability challenges treating the entire "world" as monolithic to the MCs powers. Moreover, no one has lvls. No one has stats, except determinations of "human maximum" which are genetic related even if presented through the MCs gambling ability.

As a world traveler, sure, If I had the ability I would use the same methods, but I would never be proud of them, as the MC apparently is.

Ataroth It's true that in daily interactions, you don't feel that he is in a game. Then he pulls out the "difficulty adjustment dice" or the Lottery or something every now and then. As for the rampant plagiarism and being proud of it? I'm with you 100% on being a little put off by it. My only hope is that when the game ends, and he is back in the world he came from, he will have to create original works, and the game experience will help him to do so.

manapotion Well, I don't believe its a "game world" for all the reasons I already posted, but I can see how that is a plausible conclusion.

The end of the first chapter seems to make clear that he is in a game, or a dream.

Maybe it was because he slept late last night, but tonight he had a dream where a few lines of words flashed across his mind.
