  • There's something seriously wrong with a lot of authors

I'm honestly sick and tired of the amount of pure garbage novels that are being uploaded on a bunch of sites.

Like, I get writing is hard but holy shit some of you authors are pure fucking garbage, a ten year old can write better than you.

I've seen the SAME EXACT beginning, middle, end.

Not similar, but the exact same.

Literally I'm so freaking confused on what is going on.

I don't like insulting people, I really don't, but some of you "authors" deserve it at this point.

I've haven't read a single novel in the past 2 months where there is even a bit of creativity.

I'm not even expecting anything but holy shit please have some COMMON SENSE. I shouldn't even say common, have some sense.

The amount of plot holes and just shitty writing in general has been going up and up, with the same repeated "books" ( literal shit wrapped in a bundle, I'm not holding back my words ).

I know for a lot it's for the money but it's preciesly because of this that some of you are just shit.

I know ofc that readers have a lot of influence but my words still hold true.

Especially CN authors holy shit I've never seen worse authors in my life.

everyone has different tastes sure but what I said still holds true.

Misguided_Rooster changed the title to There's something seriously wrong with a lot of authors.

Misguided_Rooster 100% agree! Then, welcome to Web Novel on where 99% of the stories they cater in here falls under those 'mediocre' genre. BTW, would you like to read something 'different' from those stories you have mentioned above? https://m.webnovel.com/book/'tales-of-the-demon-hero'_19109699806442905. This might be weird for you but I am accepting any kinds of reviews and a little support for this. So, thank you very much in advance

I would chalk it up to Sturgeon's Law, but I'm sure the percentage of perceived "crap" is higher than 90% when you've got a bunch of platforms where someone only needs a laptop and wi-fi to get started without any other involvement. (On this site, I do think the WSA contributes to a lot of repetition in terms of themes and content, especially with the werewolf double-whammy from the other contest.)

This isn't to say that I write perfect or even very good stories, of course. But when someone's on the clock to release 7-14 chapters per week, actual story mechanics take the backseat, and therein lies most of the problem.

This makes me think of the ugly NFT drawings (like the apes) that went around; purely commercializing--rather than just monetizing for the creator's benefit--creative works ends up resulting in mass-produced products without much individuality, which was mentioned.

Could you provide some specifics or examples? What are terrible about the stories, other than they are repetitive? What genre? Cultivation? Werewolf? What gets repeated? What do you mean, they lack common sense? What kind of stupid things do the characters do? What sort of plot holes?

I agree, when something has been done over a thousand times it does get boring. I write, I don’t know if I’m good enough to be called an author but when I am unique I am criticized for being, “too out of the box.” I hate to be original but if it’s something I envision or dream of I carry it out. I know my stories aren’t unique and have hints of commonality but I also know it is my own in its own ways.

You are right about it. There are only very few of good stories on this writing hub because most of the authors aren't trained authors. They just write because they want to and because they need readers to develop interest in it. They don't care about quality. And here on webnovel, it is actually even easier to care less about quality because quantity is overrated.

It's not happening here alone, it happens on wattpad also, almost everywhere you see books. And most of the times, it is as a result of the reader's views. Sometimes, readers do not favour uniquie novels, they favour some themes and genres instead which makes authors to repeat those themes and all.

Nothing wrong with that as long as you don't just copy and paste, which is what is being done all the freaking time now.

I'm not after people who are genuinely trying to write something "good", just those who copy paste, repeat, etc. These people are in the majority and it's wild.

Even if it's repeated or something is copy and pasted I can understand but there are so many other things that are done that just ruins what could of been good books.

I will have to say that I both agree and disagree with your opinion.
Honestly the CN translated novels used to be good 3-4 years ago, nowadays all you get in trial read is copy-past crap.
Its not even novels at this point, they are just themes and trends. Like they will pick one outline, and then 7-8 authors just bam copy paste it.
It even happens to original novels here.
Once any novel seems to be getting successful you will see a million clones of it floating the market.
It has happened to My Vampire System and happened to The Author's POV.
Thus you will find a LOT of copy-pastes.
The only thing I can say is that you will need to look for the true gems.
Some of them will be topping the leaderboards... and some of them not.
and while there still aren't many good new stuff, you can always put the ranking to all-time and search for some classics.

Now that you have read so far, please take a look at my current novel - "Masquerade of Madness"
It is my take on doing something new, while it is inspired by other classics in its genre, I am trying to achieve a unique and delectable storyline and experience for the readers.

If you can please give me a critique on it. Hit me with your worst lmao.

I'm pretty sure it's easy to figure out what I mean, unless you legit don't even think about what you're reading or you're just that lucky.

Ig an example would be how nothing makes sense in the books world. These authors are either mentally incapable of even stopping and thinking this doesn't makes sense or they just don't care.

Too many isms where it's impossible for there to be, too many details that the author changes mid way and then changes again ( which is understandable sometimes ), too many stupid shit that happens.

Basically authors, especially CN authors, are incapable of thought. Or they just don't care, which I mean they're writing shit so why care about shit ig.

I agree, it's the same thing with light novels, the same shit done over a thousand times it gets boring. I mean would not blame them coz those types of stories do make a lot of money a friend of mine said, I might as well write the fck it writes the same shit others do if they get that exposure that much, but then again if I tried making original other will say "it's out of nowhere" "this place ain't for modern literature " those are a lot of BS w t f do they want, it's like the kids make those comments and review, if ya want original go read a fckin real book, if not continue reading your garbage of stories here. excuse me for my quick rant, I don’t really know if I could call myself a great author but I'm willing to change things up, to make it enjoyable and unique

Hit me with your worst review or something lol.

                  @Misguided_Rooster
I gotta mirror the sentiments from a few others in the thread - it's really hard making something unique because the majority of readers want the tropey stories. There's definitely a lack of skill with many authors, but IMO there's also a lack of discernment with many readers. Some just straight up don't understand the actual written words on the page, much less any subtleties between the lines. I have had readers who thought one of my characters was one thing, despite me never mentioning anything close to what they assumed.

                  Misguided_Rooster

Stories fall under certain tropes. Example of recurring ones :
CEO - rich guy + poor girl, first-sex pregnancy, runaway with child, often involves twins or triples or quadruplets. CEO will then chase/pursue the lost family. Beg the female MC on knees. Profess undying love.

Reincarnation - person with regret goes back in time to fix something, exact revenge, save self, save others, might or might not include romance. Spouse is usually powerful. Mostly happy ending. Usually contains romance and at least a dude with unrequited love. Horrible family with inhumane step sister or step brother will be there to make the MC even more miserable.

Game - leveling up, lots of statistics, intricate world setting, long chapters, monsters, magic, beasts.

Transmigration - person is revived in another world or alternate universe or in another person's body, usually will try to fix problems of the body's host and reconnect with host's old acquaintances. Usually comes with super power or super knowledge. Artist/actress/singer/lawyer/doctor/supermodel/gold medal athlete in one person.
Host will have horrible family or step family or betrayed by her lover and or fiance.

System - usually connected to either transmigration or game trope. Awards and punishes MC as it deems fit.

Now pick one of those tropes and pick the race. Human beings? Vampires? Werewolves? Monsters? Animals? Boggarts? Robots? Witches? Banshees? Ghosts?

You might think that those novels are trash, but Webnovel would not have put them online or even do marketing for them if they are truly without fans. You can see the amount of gifts and reviews and comments and PS and whatnot those novels get. They are adopted in WN because they already succeed somewhere else. Unlike most of the new authors here who are still trying to climb the mountain of glory.

The question is, what kind of original content are you looking for? The hidden gems are hidden, but not invisible. If you don't know what you are looking for, then tell what you are NOT looking for. You will get a bunch of recommendation by authors who are trying to shine 😉

Wanna do a negative review swap.
Let's hit each other with the worst we got lmao.
Of course if we genuinely like the story there is no need to be mean on purpose though lmao

Lu_Shui I wonder why I don't see much detective stories here, it's pretty boring to read all of those trendy books. Welp, I come to WN just to promote my novels from RR, worst, lol

You mean similar to Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot?
Possibly because that trope is not as popular in webnovel culture.
I read Sherlock Holmes myself. Like it very much. I have the full canon version.
