  • Tomoyuki For God's sake, I'm so glad someone with any idea about the contract stepped in, reading this thread felt like a disaster...

So let's answer everything, even if I will repeat part of what you already said (Tomo, just can't be bothered to backread, I'm tired as hell)

@Darth_Xiane There might be a way to go premium on webnovel without contracting them. While it still requires contract, and it would be published on the publisher ACC, you would retain your copyright to it, while giving up on part of the potential income and promotion from Webnovel.

    SuperSilentSin

3k$? Let me tell you, I'm averaging in top50 trending novels with my first premium novel, and I'm quite happy earning 500$. That means, there is only about 50 novels earning more than mine on this site (in terms of original novels), and while there are some earning even more than 3k, I would never call it average, more like upper upper echelon.

Most of the novels on this site use MGS system in which you are given the chance to earn 200$ monthly for your first four full months of going premium, by uploading 1.5k words daily. Keep in mind that premium chapters HAS TO be at least 1k words long, so that means either 1 chapter a day with 1.5k+ words, or two chapters a day with any number of words.

What's more, you are forgetting about the fact that not only most of the people won't read your novel with coins but rather with fast passes, but also pirate sites do sadly exist.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask as I can't be bothered to look for them in this thread.

      cover

      Oh boy.

Okay. So, I guess, first, props to minimalism?

I'm in a time crunch, and so I just picked the first cover you had to critique (but I did look at the rest of the links you posted to give you some more general feedback at the bottom).

First things first, it's a cool base image and all, but the cover is just very, very, very dull. The colors are very bland, and the image/text are all very dim. If that's the vibe you were trying to go for, cool, but your cover doesn't really pop out at me, or really catch my attention.

So, here's the thing. It's totally okay to use not super saturated colors. However, when you're doing so, you need to make sure that there's decent contrast.

I understand that with MS, it's kind of hard to do any adjustment layers to correct your light levels, but the general idea is to make the image brighter & more contrasted. I'm sure there are some of those filters you can find online, or with basic phone image-editing services.

It's just important to make sure that the cover is eye-catching because it can definitely determine if a reader will click on it, or not. Unsaturated colors are okay, but a lack of contrast isn't as much. I guess what really bothers me the most is the shade of dark-gray cast over the entire cover. In a list of books + covers, your cover will sort of just fade into the background-- and that's not good.

Moving onto typography, you have too much spacing between your words. Try to keep the line spacing a bit more together, and it will look a lot better.

The black font is not the most ideal with how dim your image is-- I would've used white if I were keeping the same brightness of the image. It will make the title pop out a lot more.

Also, add on an author name?

This is a very simple cover in general, so there isn't much to comment other than the points I brought out above. Onto your other covers that you linked, I would say to be careful of the top right corner of all your covers. As you can see, in desktop Webnovel, the little blue "Original" label covers up some of the text you have, so I would go back and fix that.

And for Destorianaxe, the border is also not evenly spaced, and small things like that kind of bother me. The text also runs over the border. I would suggest fixing that up too.

And that's about all I have to say, gotta go run to a meeting now.

Debating if this bot shall tag the CKtalon, but alas, even this feat is too terrifying for the bot. But I do feel like some appreciation should be shown for him; pretty sure there's been some spam cases in which he deserves appreciation for (it's a lot of work to click click click the deletes). :pensive:

And appreciation to the developers too-- especially ReachZhai. The one time that ReachZhai liked my post will forever be held dear to my little robot heart. Don't wanna tag in case it's a bother. :pensive:

I hope I didn't miss anyone that I meant to mention. This bot is running low on energy, must go charge up.

        goodbye

        • Oooh, I love this thread idea and I agree with your statements about yaoyueyi. I hope no one would feel annoyed when tagged...I just appreciate you and your works. My hands are sweating after posting. XD

First People I Met on Forums
@Darth_Xiane Sorry, I'm thanking you for being the first person to reply on my longest thread: Random and Thoughts. The comment made me laugh. Besides that, I saw you are actively trying to help people with questions which is awesome. Thank you!
@Veronica8 So many things I want to say (don't fret, all positive). You're such a kind soul who helped me solidify what I want to pursue in writing. This was achieved through our small conversations and I occasionally lurk through the thread you made about tips which I find to be helpful. Your novel is breathtaking and I read it whenever I have real free time. Usually, I read when I'm procrastinating but your novel...I need to read without pressure to enjoy fully. It takes me away to another world.
@Avalondra You let me know that you enjoyed my thread and in turn, I was so happy.
@Chryiss You've commented about the thread also and it gives me happiness when you say you love reading my almost daily thoughts/stories and I remember you commenting it is a wholesome place. Thank you for liking my crazy blurbs. Also, thank you for being so kind and supportive. Honestly, I was nervous to put myself on WN's forums but you and everyone else listed in this category were all very welcoming. The recent thing about a chapter of my novel...thank you so much!

Thank You For Making Me Smile
-Everyone listed in the previous category and...
@Overlord_Venus Thank you! I rarely see you around but you have been in my notifications a few times. Just know that whenever I see you liked a dumb thing from the Random and Thought thread, I smile.
@ihateyounot Right away, I was caught by your username. Really brings a smile to my face every time I get a notification showing your username.

Admins, Helpers and Active Forum Lurkers
I rarely interact with admins or people whose work is dealing with the forums but I know they are around and always helpful. Must be hard work to keep this place organized...
Special mention to @yaoyueyi and I hope you are/stay healthy while you deal with the more toxic blobs of the forums. You are awesome no matter what others say. Also the yue bot makes me so happy whenever I see her in action.

My PC keyboard has been acting up so I'm not sure if some odd symbols found their way into my words. Typos plague my writing so anything (besides typos in these appreciation blurbs), are not intended. Maybe you'll see a random dash or asterisk...hehe
Sorry for the long post too! I got carried away.

          • Removed Report Bugs tag. No bugs seemingly reported.

Bookworm_123 Look through this list to see if there is an answer to your question:

            1. Are you on the right account? As silly as this may seem many with balance issues often are using multiple accounts and simply didn't realize they logged into the wrong one.
            2. Fast Passes currently have no expiry message. If your 'stockpile' from the most recent collected pass is more than a week ago then yes they've all expired, they have 7 day windows, if you wait till day 14 without getting new ones then they all expired.
            3. Did you have fast passes to begin with? Many seem under the impression that daily rewards are all in fp, only 3 tasks are.
            4. Any books set to auto unlock? All it takes is a TGIF mass release to nuke your fp stockpile.

-- Quoted from @Darth_Xiane (Thanks for making this awesome list, I'm gonna copy & paste it from now on whenever someone asks about it! Will refrain from tagging you in the future.)

To check to see if it was expiry, look at your consumption history here: https://www.webnovel.com/bill/fastpass. Or, if you are on the app, go to your profile > tap fast pass > look at your consumption.

If you are positive that it is none of the above & it truly is a bug, send screenshots of your consumption history & your deposit history for fast passes & reply to me, so I can re-tag it.

            • Hello, OP! I'm assuming by Fantasy, you mean... typical Western High Fantasy? And I get a maximum of 3 sentences to promote it? Bet.

@Darth_Xiane 's book The Immortal Kobold fills that.
              https://www.webnovel.com/book/15769109405892105/The-Immortal-Kobold
Its MC is a cultivator who reincarnates into a low-ranked classic fantasy race. It's a fun exploration of how a main character from a wuxia novel would survive and wreck face in a swords-and-sorcery world of elves and orcs.

I'll also put my novel down, Headed By a Snake.
              https://www.webnovel.com/book/15841414105106005
The MC is an overpowered murderer who leads a team of "traditional" adventurers. It's a mostly feel-good novel with a slice-of-life touch, traveling with other powerful adventurers.

            • Hello, OP! I want to provide you with an unpopular opinion that I think I need to share.

One of the biggest draws to the popular and OP tropes is how very easy they are to read. For a short bit of reading and not-too-much-thought, the reader receives instant gratification (like you mentioned.) It's the same reason why the Shounen genre is incredibly popular: Creative OP stuff/power creep happens. Heroes win. Groupchat your friends about it.

Examining the trends, you already know the answer to what most readers tend to want... It's everything you've pointed out, with a bias towards whatever each reader's sense of enjoyment/time-spent, considering their personal preferences, values, fetishes, etc.

I'm struggling with the same issue, myself: "How do I make my own story unique in a sea of thousands of OP System-assisted characters and powerful female CEO's?" But I've always set a lot of (silly) personal rules like "I don't want to feel like I'm repeating myself."

That stated: You're an incredibly astute Author to analyze this far, and ultimately, that sort of mindset will make you better. But remember that every story is unique and that every reader is different. You're probably doing fine. Personally, I like stories like @Darth_Xiane writes. And I've added yours just now, OP.

              Let's all work hard, together.

            • Thank you @Darth_Xiane for pointing out about Farming points on free novels totally did not forgot about putting it in here Updated the thread.
