  • One point about the translation quality. Although I, as an English speaker since I was like 7, like to have good grammar in my books, I'm doubtful that most readers here have English as their first language (or learned it when they were young). English is the people's language in the sense that if you have a German and a Taiwanese guy in Italy that need to communicate, they're going to do it with some form of broken English, more often than not. I don't remember the exact statistics, but the amount of conversations in English that occur between 2 native speakers is staggering low, something like 1-2%. I guess the point that I'm trying to make is that although some readers are alienated by the bad grammar on certain books, the amount is probably much lower than you would think, considering there's a good chance that a lot of readers don't even pick up on the mistakes, or even care. I still think good grammar is important, but then again, there are countless books out there, and if people really dislike it, then the translator isn't going to get readers, hence no revenue, hence is going to stop. Clearly, this isn't happening, so the issue is not that big, although it is admittedly frustrating for those who grew up reading western novels in English.

One thing I think is bad for the community is free SS. Admittedly, if you can't read anything for free, readers would be angry, but I don't think free SS is the solution. People can just make multiple accounts or read off of third-party sites and not need to pay. Of course, removing free SS would not remove people reading for free, but it would make it harder to read for free, or more exactly, it would make it less obvious, meaning people would be more inclined to buy SS. Clearly, we can't just remove free SS and not give anything in return, because then you'll just have more angry readers. I think a decent solution would be to make it so that every time something like 3 premium chapters get released, each user gets their first locked chapter released.

Basically, if a book has 900 chapters, free readers get 1 chapter for each 3 premium chapters, so when the book is done being translated, 300 are free and 900 are locked. If a user buys 100 chapters, since the first locked chapter would be the first one released, then they would have 400/900. Doing it this way means a few things:
    1) Free users still get a chapter every ~2 days (more than the current premium system)
    2) More incentive to buy SS since getting free chapters becomes more tedious and annoying.
    3) More incentive for users to buy SS, since after reading 1/3 of the way through over such a long period of time, you're probably going to want to keep going.
    4) More incentive to buy SS due to the earliest locked chapter being unlocked. Back when premium started, it was a fixed chapter being unlocked for everyone regardless of if you've unlocked something or not before. Hence, if you bought SS then stopped, you lost your free chapters even though free users got theirs, which was really frustrating. With this system, if someone buys 50 chapters, then they're permanently ahead 50 chapters, regardless of if they keep paying, and are not locked into it to keep daily chapters.

Anyway it might not exactly be the best suggestion, but I do think it would be better than what they have now.

    • Honestly one of the main reasons I read webnovels is precisely because they're long. At this point, I consider something of the length of the Hunger Games trilogy roughly equivalent to a short story. Longer books have a lot more room for world building and character growth. Also, if I like a book, I don't want it to randomly end. A lot of western novels are just the story of a small event, or a lot of things are not well elaborated, and much of the past and future is left open since there just isn't enough room to fit it all. I like to dive into the world of the book, which is hard to do if I can read the whole thing in a short few hours. Of course, if the book is just bad and repetitive, then it's not worth reading anyway, and I wouldn't read it regardless of if it was long or short.

The other advantage is that if you find a book that you actually like, you can keep reading it for a while. There's a lot of lower quality novels though, so it's not always easy.

Anyway, maybe the books you've been reading recently just haven't really been all that good, or maybe you got burned out from binging a book since they're meant to be read 2-3 chapters a day, not all at once.

If you're into cultivation novels at all, maybe give Forty Millenniums of Cultivation a shot.

EDIT: the number of books I've dropped is at least 10x higher than the ones I'm currently reading, so I do get your point though. At some point, I just lost interest in them.

      • It's the first 100k words which are free, which is roughly equivalent to one western novel of average size (ie: Hunger Games). Tbh, it's a pretty fair system, given how much work is put into bringing these novels to the readers, but the transition from free to premium is bumpy, to say the least. I do think the prices are a little high though.

        • You can submit however many you want, although if you don't have chapters every day or two at the very least, getting more readers might be hard. If you sign a contract with them, you can guarantee 400$ USD per month for 4 months as long as you write 100k words per month (~3k per day). Of course, your novel needs to be popular enough to get a contract in the first place.

          • That's not really a solution. Gifting is an additional revenue stream, but it doesn't solve the issue with the revenue stream coming from unlocking chapters.

I can think of multiple solutions, but I'm not sure if what I described is actually happening, so I'll hold on to them for now.

            • I'm not sure this counts as a bug, and I don't know if it's actually an issue. However, I recall an official post saying that authors/translators only get paid when people unlock chapters using paid SS (ie: not the free daily SS, for obvious reasons). Also, free SS get used before paid SS get used since they expire. Hence, if some novel releases chapters shortly after the daily reset occurs, and a premium reader is reading multiple novels, it is quite likely that each day, his free daily SS is always used on the novel which releases chapters shortly after the daily reset, hence not getting paid for his work. In an extreme example, a paying reader would read 2 novels, and all of the SS that are worth money would go to a single novel, while the other would get entirely free SS. Of course, this probably wouldn't occur to this degree, but it's easy to see that novels which release chapters closer to the time after the daily reset would potentially be remunerated less compared to another novel even if they have the same amount of paying readers.

As I said before, I'm not sure if this is actually happening or not, but I just wanted to make sure that Webnovel is aware of this potential issue. Of course, releasing chapters shortly after the daily reset also has the benefit of people being more likely to give out power stones, but I think that's a separate issue altogether.

              • Although a lot of people shit on Goose Five's novels (Strongest Abandoned Son and Immortal Mortal), I actually think they're both pretty good. SAS is in a modern setting. Unlike most novels where there's always one main plot point going on, there tends to be 3, 4 or 5 going on at the same time in SAS, so there's always a bunch of action, which I find pretty neat. You never really have time to catch your breath though.

                • I have not read it, but "National School Prince is a Girl" looks pretty promising by looking at the reviews. Also, maybe try Doomsday Wonderland. Again, I've not read it, but it seems like it might be similar to It's Not Easy to Be a Man After Travelling to the Future.

                • 8374fg48fh To explain my perspective on this, I'll refer to anime. If you look at the most popular animes, you're going to get stuff like naruto, DBZ, bleach, and SAO. The general consensus of people who have watched a lot of anime is that these shows are really not that good. However, if you have not, then these look pretty darn cool the first time around, hence the high popularity.

It's kind of the same thing going on here. A lot of these high-rated novels are really just plain bad if you've read a lot of books. As an experienced reader, of course, you're going to be disappointed when you snatch up one of these books. However, just like anime, it doesn't mean that there isn't anything good out there, you just have to look around for it. You might also need to dig a little more since there is no barrier to entry in this industry. Anyone can just go ahead and write what they want, so finding good books can sometimes be annoying since you need to filter through so much stuff.

Also, another point is actually just the format that is appealing. If you get a good book and can continue to read 1-2 chapters a day, or can read hundreds if not thousands of chapters all at once, this is a lot more appealing than reading a typical 100,000 page book in a few hours, then waiting several months or even years to read the sequel, only to be disappointed since you don't remember any of the important plot points of characters.

One more thing to note is that since these books tend to be extremely long, reading a few chapters really does not give you an idea of what you're in for. Sometimes, the author improves while writing and it gets better. Sometimes, the author runs out of ideas and pumps out garbage to fill in daily chapters.

Lastly, this is not the only website that hosts these kinds of novels. You can check on novelupdates for a more complete list of books, and with much better searching functions to look for types of books that you may like better.

I don't know what types of novels you like, but a pretty good one on this site would be Forty Milleniums of Cultivation. You can give that a shot.

My all-time favorite (probably) is Against the Gods, but it's not on this site. You can try that one too. I don't want to give spoilers, but even though the MC is reincarnated in ATG, it actually plays a major part in the story and is not simply used as a gimmick to make the MC stronger at the start.

                • Just sayin', there are at least 3 workarounds to get the premium chapters for free. A quick google search can find you how to do this in less than 2 minutes.

EDIT: I'm aware that doing this does not support the author, but it's actually Webnovel's shitty pricing and policies that are making people not want to pay. If they removed all daily stones and toned the price down by 5x, people would buy stones. Probably. More than now anyway.

                  • I just read the latest chapter and Zhang Tie meets Pandora again. I'm sure that since Zhang Tie is an airhead and because the author wants to build up drama and tension, he's not going to even try to mention his identity, or probe if she still remembers the one who gave her the ring, or mention something that only both of them would know, and they're going to pass each other without interacting. However, I'm really dying to know if they end up together at the end. If anyone has finished the raws and can tell me, that would be great.

While we're on the subject, does anyone know if he ends up with Alice and Lan Yunxi? (I think those were the names)

                    • Honestly, I don't really care about it that much unless it gets totally out of hand. Pretty much any Hollywood movie is filled with western propaganda and American elitism. It's not like they're doing it to stroke their own dicks, it's just that it's what resonates the most with their target audience. It's the same with webnovels, just a different country and culture.

                    • Theatriks Yeah now that you mention it I do believe that it was an Assassin's Creed robe.

                      • I honestly don't mind that they are getting people to pay to read novels. I mean, a lot of people are putting a lot of work in to get these chapters out to us, and I want to support them. However, I do agree that the prices are a little high. I wouldn't mind that they had a subscription system where you can get all premium chapters for a monthly fee, or that chapters were cheaper but mandatory to unlock after a certain point (like the Chinese version of Webnovel). However, as it stands, it's so expensive that I don't want to contribute since it's going to demolish my wallet. For a novel with ~2k chapters, it would cost close to 400$ US if you were going to read it fully premium. Adding the fact novels are constantly going premium and a lot of people read dozens, it really isn't sustainable.

EDIT: As a note, I've been trying to read at most 2-3 premium titles at once so I can sustain them with daily stones and a single payment I made like half a year back where there were 5k bonus stones on a single payment. However, I do not plan on buying more stones unless they change the pricing. I have dropped many novels that have went premium like Strongest Abandoned Son since there are too many characters and it's impossible to keep up with only 1 chapter per day.

                      • Even though I haven't been reading RTW for the last few months so my memory could be faulty, I seem to recall that Nightingale doesn't wear a witch hat, or whatever else she's wearing on that pic for that matter. She wears a robe with a hood, no?

                        • It's been dropped by the author for almost 2 years. I doubt anyone would want to start translating something that will end in such an unsatisfying manner.

                          • I have been reading this one for a while and I do like it quite a bit. Unfortunately, the release rate on radiant has been really inconsistent in the last half a year or so due to lack of editors. Would appreciate it if it was picked up.

                          • As a side note, if we compare prices from Webnovel.com to their website for Chinese readers, the price here is roughly 11 times higher per chapter (If we're going by 50$ for 2500 SS). These prices are more expensive than most paperback novels.

                            • It would be nice if Webnovel automatically computed release rates using data from the last few weeks or something because as of now all we have access to is when the last chapter was released. Also, if timestamps could be added to chapter releases that would be nice. When looking through all these new original novels popping up here and there, I don't even want to consider reading it if it only releases 2-3 chapters a week, but this data is not available.

Also, if we could put filters on the searches such as release speed or tags, that would be nice. It didn't matter when the site was just opening since there were few novels, but now that there are so many, especially with the original novels, I have no idea why this is not implemented yet.
