  • thoughts about nationalism/racism in novels

I'm reading a few mondern novels and their like China is the best, everything is second. Japanese / Americans, / the rest of the world sucks. now now before us. like wtf . I just want to enjoy the book. so it kinda turns me off some novels when the review calls for nationalism

    eros

Nationalism is a big part of our Asian culture. That's how society around us shaped us, with movies, musics, and books. It helps politicians to rile people up, helps people overlook others' human rights, and helps getting hyped up for things we have no stacks in. Most people here don't even recognize it, and worse even, it gives some a sense of pride I guess?

Most of the nationalism/racism novels come between 2006-2011 novels(not talking about translation date), when there was a pressure in China due to internal and external affairs.
The novels only started being translated in 2014/15. Till then, it was only written for Chinese audiences.
In a nationalistic society, people love seeing their countries glorified.
Maybe, for some novels, nationalism/racism was a way to rile up audiences, similar to how fanservices are used in jp novels (just on a more offending, racist, and annoying way....especially when your nation is mentioned)

Oh, but regardless of the age, they will always be racist to japan. It is like the staple of CN modern genres😑😑😧

Don't worry eros. That's what web novels r all about. U can never find a chinese getting dumped in sewage, but u obviously will find japs, americans, Indians, Vietnamese and many more not only dumped but also beaten to death. That's what web novels r....

JunkieOverThe_Moon I wonder if any of those authors even think nationalism is bad. IRAS's author takes pride in his racism and nationalism and it's not like he'd feel ashamed if pointed out. The fanboys however are more annoying. Dare you point out any flaw, you'll be swarmed.

Water0202020 Nah... I have seen novels written in 2016 and later exude lots of racism!! Sometimes it's subtle, other times not so subtle(*the thing about humans with dark skin fUckiNg animals and killing innocents etc....... though I like that novel.... guilty pleasure I guess...)

eros Western culture did the opposite of that, yet their work is cringey AF. In Spiderman Homecoming, Peter Parker is the only white character in New York. This is what you get if you wanna cater to everyone's needs and tiptoe like everything is made in China. Stop making a big deal of everything, being Nationalistic is not racist. Calling black people black is not racist, coz not all black people are "African Americans". If you see a 'no Chinese' sign in a buffet is racist. Giving more jail time to non whites is racist. Name calling is just an insult. Stereotyping is rude I know, but it still fall short for being racist. Everyone calling racist everytime a different national reference is involved is annoying.

bachingchung There's a difference with including majority black cast and calling out black people for having black skin, thicker lips (like in IRAS) and to compare the 'cringiness' of the two is really unfair. The former is a step toward increasing representation of other ethnic groups in an institute like Hollywood while the former is meant as a cheap laugh at the expense of other people.

And 'nationalism' is not 'racism' but they are homogenous. The later is when you marginalize people based on their ethnicity and the former is when you marginalize people based on culture and border. People make a big deal because both have known bad history. Really, really bad history. Once you start normalizing these two things and condone it in novels that thousands of people read, you are effectively enabling those things.

bachingchung I know but in ss or in any novel really you have to be Chinese to be the best or in the top 10. you at least need some of it in you

I'm not tip toeing around it. I'm just saying I been seeing it some of the books I read and wanted to comment about it. idc if it happens as long as it goes with the plot. or I dont see why some times the author goes out of his way to push the fact Chinese is the master race. like in ss rhe original number 1 I forget his name is half Chinese and was a assassin. the author forgot about his american side and focused on his Chinese side for most of it. and thenthey being up their un and how they are counting who has who or where they originated from.

eros when Americans make movies they make themselves number 1. So are the other countries. It's not surprising if a Chinese author writes an MC who will be number 1 too. That's expected to all the novels here. Don't bandwagon to those idiots who doesn't know what being Nationalist means. It's not a negative trait or something deregatory, I seem to notice these kind of threads popping recently.

U will feel bad when u read something bad about ur country or people in a book u love. This is all that is being said in these threads bachingchung , my frnd. And u might've not noticed it, but American movies signifying their gets criticized heavily by the public in the various posts. Dude, it's not surprising. The authors r insulting other people of their origin. Be serious.
In web novels, killing people must be justified by categorizing them as bad people. And therefore, in doing so, the authors basically make some nation and race of people, his scapegoat. Scapegoat for the plot.
Wht I mean to say is simple. The book is urs and u can choose it to be published anywhere u like. But if u r publishing it in the international market, do consider the thoughts of those , whom u r labelling as 'bad' people in ur story

                  Dude bachingchung be serious.
                  I can only say that.
The book I swritten by the author and it is his book. He has the right to write whatever he likes . But if u want to publish it for the international market, plz consider the feelings of those readers who r being insulted by ur, the author's, words.
And if u r writing it while thinking about ur nation don't publish it in the international market or sites.
Or else such kinds of posts will keep on coming.btw, bachingchung r u a chinese ??? Just asking. Don't mind the offense

bachingchung I didn't even consider it until now......!! Hmm... they were subtle I guess....(I am an Indian... lots of colors here in my country)

Soyboy Though I hate quoting these kinds of stuff.... but!! https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/13/world/asia/china-racist-museum-exhibit.html

bachingchung Nah!! I know they are going to have a chinese MC being a hero in there novels it's common sense, but when they come at the expense of other countries displayed as inferior(not the people.. I am talking about entire culture) then I start to get irritated(only if I notice.. I won't argue if it's somewhat subtle..)
Like for example in Swallowed Star, no country is shown to be antagonistic, even though the strongest in the planet (The main 3) spawn fro China, other countries are not shown in bad light. For example... there was a man named Nehru who hailed from my country... he was an asshole villain... I hated him and wanted him to die.... he dies.... I am happy again.

But then there is another example, where a certain country is shown to be Mass murdering rapist and dirty people who use long curved swords, or the people from a neighboring countries of there...... the girl from that country becomes a slave to the MC because she thinks he is a god as she is an uncultured stupid "something".

Well, to be fair, Chinese hate their own country just as much as they hate Japan. Just think about it, if you add up all the annoying anti jap propaganda and general racism in most modern world chinese webnovels, it won’t even add up to a tiny fraction of the plot where the mc has to deal with corrupt CHINESE officials, rapist CHINESE young masters and countless CHINESE gangs that keep CHINESE police on a short leash. The more I read this chinese webnovels, the more I get the feeling that china is not a nice place be in, your life there isn’t worth more then the cloths you wear or so this novels seem to portray

UnhingedTaboo (I am an Indian... lots of colors here in my country)

That's another rabbit hole. It's easy to realize how much racism Indians and Bengalis hold once you go about your everyday life with open eyes. Fairness cream ads, and how they try to relate success with lighter skin tones, how people treat others based on their 'fairness', the 'white item girls' in pretty much all the movies, are pretty evident.

I have a cousin who earned a BSc degree, was young and beautiful and yet her parents had to search the heavens and hell to find someone willing to marry the girl with darker skin tone. She eventually married a guy from her workplace and left home. I've seen her crying in secret and I know why. That's like an everyday life here in BD. The racism isn't often intrinsic, rather very blatant. It's like we hate own own natural color and drawn to the 'Aryan' race. It's not biological, being drawn to the paleness of color. It's society shaping our perception of beauty.

JunkieOverThe_Moon the reason the novels were written in Chinese is because it's for their eyes only to begin with. Tencent just want to make money out of everything. I won't be surprised if they start selling bottled air.

No I'm not CN, it's just common sense to portray your own nation as superior. It's nothing new. I'd rather read an honest portrayal of characters than read shit that is baby proofed for these special snowflakes.
