  • Unless its trial read(mtl'ed novels) it's probably the author's lack of vocabulary.

  • MishaK As a reader, I'd agree. But its kinda hard to show (without proper vocabulary and English is my 3rd language, so I can't really write concisely)

  • Tomoyuki Omg, I agree with you. I'm sick and tired of this paragraph 🤣

    • Tomoyuki Hello, your advice isn't wrong, but I think there's a misunderstanding here. There are actually types of show, don't tell. Type of tells: Emotional Tells, Motivational Tells, Stage Directional Tell, Passive Tell, Descriptive Tell...What you mentioned is actually infodump(which is another tell)

And the aforementioned example I mentioned is emotional tell...You can learn more of show, don't tell by reading — Understanding Show, Don't Tell: And Really Getting It — By Janice Hardy...Hope this helps.

      • Misguided_Rooster Haha, that's true. I have a love and hate relationship with it. The author sometimes uses tell too much(Probably bc of the deadline and fast update, like 2 chapters a day...There's probably no time for edit from show to tell.)

      • shadowdrake27 Thank you. I'm still a beginner author, so balancing isn't my forte...I'll guess I'll just practice more...Thanks for the advice, helps a lot.

      • I noticed webnovels are heavy telling than showing, I'm confused if it's okay or not; I'm an author who does more tell than show. I know the saying, "show, don't tell", but does this applies to webnovel? Is it necessary to show as novels do?

(Those who don't know what show, don't tell is, it's basically like this:

Tell: Her heart filled with sadness
Show: Her chest tightened, holding back her sobs.
(Example not mine, but this is basically Tell. The red flag is the word " with", a tell word just like with the word "in")

But as you notice, there are many novels on this site that did this...so I was wondering, is this really alright for you as a reader?

        • Have you seen how bias is it?

Fang Yuan - Reverend Insanity (Neutral Evil)

And there's Flander - I am a scarecrow and the demon lord of terror (Mc is chaotic evil)

Idk why but Qidian banned RI bc of its gruesome (Mc is very evil). However, I Am A Scarecrow and the Demon Lord of Terror took the evilness to the next level and is still uploading. Isn't it funny how they did not ban it despite how evil the mc is?

Spoiler: Mc even killed someone while uploading it on some site.

I'm not here to start something but to just state my opinion. (I really want to see how RI end, unfortunately, this won't happen.)

          • It's a harem if the mc has 2 or more women.

            • My Superstar Uncle( Manhua), novel version has no eng translation yet sadly.

And Full-time artist(This is good like I'm really a superstar; If not, better. Just read it, you will like it. Sadly, qidian doesn't have an interest in translating it into eng translation else it would be cool to have it.

              • This should be implemented. This is a good idea to see how many people click/read each chapter.

                • Man, this should be chosen. I read it and it's good. Same goes for Night's Nomenclature. There are so many good cn books out there. But out of all, they choose books almost with the same plot. For instance, 80 years signing-in cold palace, I am unrivaled...My tortoise girlfriend...Top tier Providence...Banished in the...Magic deity....All of these don't even hold a finger compared to I just won't play by the book, Dafeng's Nightsquad, Night's Nomenclature. Perhaps except for Top providence, all picked translation novels are garbage.

                • It has been a year I start writing on this platform and my time here is all worth it and fun. Back when I am a reader, I never think I can write a book. Lol.

So the purpose of this post is to share some of my writing formula :d

                  My writing formula:

Low point — This is where the story starts, the mc's situation, and difficulties. (You should ruthlessly humiliate the mc in this chapter to spice up some satisfying moments after his revenge)

Reversal 1: Here is where mc starts to shine

                  1. Setback — A conflict to starts the story.

                  2. 2 Setback overcome — Overcoming the setback.

Reversal 2: Here is the consequence of Reversal 1

                  2.1. Setback — The conflict's difficulty (stake)rose to a level.

                  1. 2 Setback overcome — Overcome setback 2

Reversal end: This is where everything ends.

3.1 Setback — This is where the big fish show up
                  3. 2 Setback overcome — Overcome the setback
                  3. 3 Setback completed — Killing/defeating the villain.

Setback Consequence — This is where the consequence of completing the setback.

Here is an example for a springboard:

Low point: An immortal reincarnated into the body of a young man. He is bullied and known as the 1 trash of the Sect.

                  Reversal 1:

Setback 1: The person who kills his predecessor(the original owner of the body) sent his underlings to beat him up

                  Setback overcome

                  He defeats the underlings.

                  Reversal 2

Setback 2: This time, the villain sent a bigger mob

                  Setback overcome:

                  He killed the bigger mob

                  Reversal end

Setback 3: The villain personally acts
Setback Overcome: Showdown between the mc and villain(obv villain lost)

                  Setback completed: Defeating/crippling/killing the villain.

                  Setback's Consequence

The villain's big brother shows up.

                  --

This formula is simply a generic one. I hope this gives you an idea of how to write a novel with a natural flow!
