According to top novels I have read (not romance novel). Here are some points all of them have in common:
- Arrogance MC: Trouble maker, everything coming conflicts and end up in fight and some occasions you don't need a logic reason to fight someone.
- Brainless Villians or No Brainer: Villians are always envy or make MC out of the enemy for no reason. And mostly they act on stupidity with no logic could defy.
- MC has Heaven Luck: OK MC make enemy out of the stronger guy (stronger cultivation) and He still survive countless time. And He always get a hand on priceless things etc.
- Cheat System, Heaven Defy Talent or OP MC: Yes people tend to read somethings that are easy to get Maybe real life is so hard so novel could make them escape from reality.
- Faceslap: This one is the popular one people like to see faceslap.
- Talk nonsense: Yes you hear right "talk nonsense" or "trash talk". Some don't like but most readers like it.
- A lot of Battles: The battle make thing interesting.
And others points that I may miss.

Nowadays, they are in a decline. You will notice that such points were frequent in old novels than new ones(not translation date, but when they were written), now they are leaning towards broader genre and less hypocrisy is seen. Arrogance, and useless deaths however remains the sameπŸ˜”πŸ˜”

Yeah. In the early days, those points you listed are what made CN novels make a boom.

Now, what's making a novel popular are its world building and non-linear characters.

Dunno though, as long as something clicked, most readers follow it just for the sake of following the trend.

True!! Also don't forget about that the most beautiful girls are either childhood friend or people who will all in love with him ad soon as they seem him. And the other role where the fiance will break up with the Mc because he lost his talent and is a waste so he becomes stronger.

Each of the chapters I write is 5000+ words. However, I can usually only do one such chapter a day. I could split each of those up to two or three chapters and increase my chapter count but the word count would be much lower. Are y'all suggesting that if I did that I could increase my readership?

Check out my book and tell me if you think it would do better with more chapters but lower word count or as is.

      Thanks!

VynDahl definitely break them into smaller chapters. Did you know how tiring it is to read 5000 words chapter? You don't want to burden your readers with too much reading. If there are smaller chapters readers can casually read one or two chapters and then take a break and then come back again later for more. That is, if you can make it interesting enough they want more.

          1. An MC with huge enough hand for slapping.
          2. Dog sh*t luck.
          3. Audience/crowds that says "impossible!", "he's too young!" Etc.
          4. Damsel in distress.
          5. Arrogant Princess.
          6. A system. Duh.
          7. A background theme of either medieaval era, present but strived for popularity, and or a game world.
          8. Also and the most important of all, say that MC had transmigrated/reincarnated to a world of (see no. 7), then forget about it after the first 2 to 5 chapters. Oh Boy, this sure is a panty dropper for the readers.

bachingchung Damn, only point 7 and a part of 8 count for my novel (the reincarnation part, not the forgetting part). I'm screwed.

I think that instead of doing what everyone else is doing do something original.

The Kings Avatar is #1 not just because it's got a game element or has face slapping but because
            A) it has humor that isn't forced
            B) It has daily release (2 per day)
            C) It is original
            D) It is well written
            E) most importantly it has a good flow for the story.

I tried to write an article here recently and instead found a button to make my own novel.

I'll try my hand at it just to give it a try and gain an appreciation of other authors as to just how hard it is to make a novel. Let alone a good one.

Coming up with a story that can last for 1,000 chapters takes foresight. Some Authors don't seem to have this and you can tell this is the case when the either keep "levelling" up the character to different stages over and over and over (eg: Immortal Mortal) or they rely too heavily on plots twists which don't really coherently follow the original subtext/direction of the novel.

In xianxia/xuanhuan, no idea which is original remains original. Once a new formula is applied and it gets popular, it becomes cliche as everyone applies it. CCG was original at its time(2015), ended up getting 3 inferior version(all in 2016) copies which are currently more chap than it is. Modern cultivation was a original topic in 2006(when very pure very ambiguous came out), now it is the most common genre. Teaching novels were originality, now it is popularized. Like this, no novel original ideas remain original.πŸ˜”πŸ˜”

Blackest what's the need for foresight? Just make a Xianxia or Wuxia. After an arc, let the MC go through an adventure. Make other characters stronger. Change names. Rehash the plot on the first arc. That will do for at least 10 volumes right there.

VynDahl not really. Sounds stupid, but definitely works. Although I was being sarcastic about it, I still get duped by those kind of LNs from time to time. I mean, just look at LotHP. As long as there's a good humor involved, everyone will turn a blind eye to these cliches.

bachingchung I hate the auction cliche. I always skip the auction chapters when I come to them. It's usually, priceless treasures the MC can't afford he somehow can either through selling overly precious items of his own or some other means.

We have the rooster show where the MC goes to buy something is mocked or threatened but the MC manages to embarras someone into silence.

MC wins all of the auction items.

MC has ticked off all the major powers in the area and they're waiting for him outside. This usually leads to a chase that almost kills him or other shenanigans ensue.

If the MC failed to get something at the auction, even if he was only mildly curious about it the winner is either killed in such a way where the MC gets all of his treasures. Or for some reason, the person who wins the item just decides to give it to the MC.

                    Me hate auctions!

Plus, every auction is always run by either a beautiful woman that he'll probably never date or by an overly powerful old fart.

VynDahl what?! I love auctions! Those are the best parts for me. Auctions, farming and academy days. Those are my faves. Besides, everytime something is missing, it will coincidentally appears on the auction despite of the slim chance.
