Webnovel is a business. They will do whatever they like to retain their readers/writers. The whole idea of creating this portal is to give writers a platform to vent their ideas, and also to connect people across cultures.

However, they can eliminate writers who are not updating their stories for more than a month or updating just one chapter a week. This process will ensure some improvement and will keep their readers satisfied to some level.

    more story means more traffic and it will aid their business. no matter what the story is if one read it it will be enough for them, what they want to do is earn money. And it's yin-yang, if one story is good there are bound to be some bad too. it just up to your taste.

      Imagine thinking that this is an issue when in the west we have fifthy shades of gray(rape). We have novels promoting adultery(specifically cheating on your “significant other”).
      This is not only a webnovel “problem” it is frequent on other publications.
      By the way, what is a toxic relationship?
      Be more specific.

        FBC1337 I think they mean relationships when one person beats up or abuses his/her partner (physically, mentally or otherwise), but the partner for some reason continues to love his/her significant other and insists on staying in the relationship despite the violence or abuse.

        Oneagain Well I'm a medical student so I'll try to explain it.

        In human brain the part of the brain that is linked with sexual arousal is closely related with the part that is linked with the feelings of fear, anger, sense of punishment and pain.

        In some people---not some-- in a lot of people these brian parts intermingle and thus sexual arousal is linked with pain, fear, punishment etc. Everyone perceives it differently as it greatly depends on genetics. So people tend to like such things as abusive relation and that is why it is quite famous.

        Its not like people who enjoy these things want it to happen to them. Its just they like this stuff for a reason that the nature made them that way. And a person who has a different mind structure has difficulty in getting the concept of those people finding abusive relation attractive. So a person who dislikes abusive things can never understand what other people like about it.

        So he accuses of such people being messed up or being damaged or sadistic.

        But that's not the thing.

        Do you know according to wikipedia half of the women had a rape fantasy at some point in their life?

        I used to think I'm messed up because I like such things but now I realize this is how nature made us. This is what we are. And we can't change what we like and what we dislike.

        Oneagain Totally agree with you on this one! Some of the "professional stories" contain hard abuse and rape! Like the 99th Divorce, and some others. You even have to pay to read the rape in the 99th Divorce, and after raping the female lead, it's all okay, she's just shy and he is "sweet" to her. HOW CRAZY MUST YOU BE??!!
        I cannot understand why these stories do not come with a rape warning or even why someone is crazy enough to think this up and label it "romantic" and the rapist as "misunderstood". It is just baffling, nauseating. It also scares me that Webnovel condones these stories, especially since I believe that the audience should still be rather young in some stories. Is this normal in Asian countries? Because if so, then I should hope that the internet leads and teaches this new generation that it's NOT okay!! Even when you are married, you have the right to your own body, the right to say no. If someone hits you or rapes you, then get out of that toxic environment! By publishing such stories and labeling them 'modern romance', it is doing the opposite. It is telling the audience that yes, it's normal to be raped, just bear with it, dear. It makes me so angry and frustrated! No one should rape you, grab you by the pussy, just randomly kiss you when he is angry at you, hit you, kick you out of the house while you are pregnant, lock you up in a basement (or in your bedroom) when he is angry, and some other weird shit you see in these stories or hear in politics.

        Just yesterday I saw this description in the "Trending Original Stories":
        "Synopsis
        He never know that he would finally fall in love with a woman. The moment he found out that he loves her, he tried everything to win her heart.
        She hates him and He loves her.
        She was treated as a princess and He was treated like a devil.
        She was raped and He was her rapist.
        He want to redeem himself in her sight but she wouldn't give him a chance.
        When will she finally accept him?"

        How crazy is this?! Especially, after reading that he raped her: "when will she finally accept him?". Like never ever maybe? Webnovel should never allow such a story to 'trend', if you want to read that shit, you should have to look for it in the pile of other stories.

        Webnovel should start a new model, where you have to send in a writingplan for them to check, along with the first 20 chapters or so. This could solve many issues:
        - the issue of looking for rough diamonds in the great pile of rubbish, which causes some good stories to be buried for a long time;
        - the issue of having stories 'dropped' or stopped halfway, because the writer has no more inspiration;
        - the issue of having stories written in a style that resembles a 5-year old;
        - the issue of PLAGIARISM!!! I have seen it more than once, that an 'original' story is copied from another source and labeled as 'original'.

        So, I hope Webnovel reads this comment and thinks up a solution. They should invent rape-warnings or at least set up a section under each story that contains rape, in which they explain that in this and this chapter the ML or FL does this and that but that's NOT normal. And if it happens to you, seek help.
        They should also start a screening before anyone could possibly publish, make potential writers set up a writing plan and send in the first 20 chapters or so. As it is now, I sometimes click by accident on inkstone, and almost start a story. That's annoying and it also annoying that some writers do not do it by accident, but that I wish they wouldn't be able to find that button ...

        Ok, that's my rant. Propably Webnovel (or anyone hahaha) won't read it, but it's off my chest!

        Happy new years and to all the writers, don't let me stop you from following your dreams! Just maybe set up a plan and ask for help from an editor? ;)

          You'd probably have better luck asking a random stranger for a million dollars than to ask webnovel for quality control. 95% of the novels they promote and translate here are incredibly low in quality compared to the national standard. This is because there is a huge difference in literary, moral and societal standards in China, compared to other major countries that produce literary works. The majority of what you see on this website IS top of the line novel quality in China's literary world.

          This is precisely why you can go to qidian and look at countless novels that receive praise and incredibly high ratings, but when you read the translated version you end up thinking "the **** are these reviewers on? I need some of that!"

          Characters experiencing rape, verbal/physical/emotional abuse, or outright coldblooded murder and accepting it as par for the course is 'exciting' in their eyes. Same with the whole "Get so angry your emotions go cold and your face neutral" is considered 'bad-ass', where as i'd like to think most of us kinda just roll our eyes over it, or downright despise such content.

          Its unfortunate, but if you're looking for quality novels, webnovel would probably not be the right place for that. Id dare say you'd probably have better luck on wattpad.

          You'd find a whole lot less "YOU DARE!?" "I, YOUR FATHER!" and "BRAT, DIEEEEE!" there.

            My story does not contain rape and abused...that must be the reason nobody commented, give reviews or vote for my novel...kind of sad...

            So... abused, rape and extreme violence are readers favorites staple in a novel nowadays?
            What is wrong with readers, are they so bored in their mind that they think violence and abused in any form is beautiful or exciting? That blows my mind away...

            Peaches That is just a false equivalency to equate the content on webnovels as the best literary production of the Chinese people. Webnovels are webnovels and published novels are published novels, one does not equal to the other. That would be me saying all the western fan-fics are the best the western literary world has to offer. That is just factually untrue.

            Webnovels are not a representation of Chinese literature so please do not draw that false equivalency and lampoon the rich history of a whole nation and its people based on a narrow view that you get from reading webnovels, a media that is specifically catered to a particular audience.

            Yeah, I don't know what Peaches was smoking. Besides, it's not as if only Chinese (or Asian) stories contain that sort of thing. There's also quite a lot of violence, abuse and toxic relationships in Western fiction as well, but obviously none of us see those as the best literary production of the "West". Kind of weird to jump to such conclusions when your only exposure to Chinese novels are translations of webnovels. I'm guessing you don't actually read actual Chinese books (those that are not published online), right? So how did you conclude that the webnovels represent the "best" of Chinese fiction? That makes no sense.

            FBC1337 well, some people like that sort of thing. At least label it dark erotica if you publish it, plus a page about how not normal it is 😝 I have to admit that I also have read the 50 shades series 🙈

            MishaK one chapter a week not enough ?!! come on its not so easy to write 2000words staying coherent with your story and plot, then tou read it again and correct it, then tou need to translate it when you dont speak english fluently, it takes more time than writing, then tou need to reread again to be sure, and at last you publish. Not everyone can do it in one day, we have a work and a life too.
            I think one chapter by week it's not so bad.
            Let peole write what they want its like that in real life too, you just buy or read what you want orto like, we are the only ones who can give credits or not to writer.

              Lelouch91 One chapter a week will not generate enough attention from readers. Even if someone picks your book and add it to their library, waiting to read another chapter next week would be torture! I mean, you forget the story by then. The reader may want to drop it. There is a lot of competition out there and plenty of books vying for readers' attention. Who has the patience to wait for a book that updates just once a week?

              If writing/translating/proofreading etc takes time, then it is better to have lots of chapters written in advance and then release them on regular daily basis to keep the readers interest on.

                Oneagain
                QiDian is indeed famous among male readers.
                However, QiDian would NOT be mature women's first choice in China, as you said, romance novels in QiDian are considered naive and shallow, and only for girls with insufficient life experience.
                Instead, the most famous web novel website aiming at female readers in China is JinJiang(晉江/jjwxc.com) . In most novels you will not see the problems mentioned .

                  MishaK What BS is this? You might not, but don't speak for all the other readers. Some readers are fine with reading a chapter a week, especially since they have many stories to read. You don't have the patience, that's fine. You can read those stories with daily updates, no one is stopping you from doing that. But don't speak for others and stop people from updating once a week. Writers have real life and work to deal with, you know? They can't write one chapter a day all the time.

                  Just because you don't have the patience doesn't mean all readers don't. Just read whatever daily update stories you want, and let other people read whatever stories they want. I, and I'm sure quite a few people here too, am happy to wait a week or so for a new chapter as long as the quality is there. Who are you to demand that Webnovel kicks them out just because they can't keep up with your insane schedule demands? It's not as if you're paying the writers in the first place!
