MotivatedSloth Watch it buddy, if you write too much your comment might go premium.
I think it is time to move on from the webnovel forever.
MotivatedSloth Nope. Double those numbers mate. 1 coin = 0.02 not 0.01. Therefore double everything. You would have a case, if you mentioned bonus coins (if they actually give them? I don't know). Say you buy 1000 coins, they are supposedly giving you a bonus of 1000 as well. This would make sense in that case. if we talk about the rate alone, it's $0.02 per coin. 10 coins means $0.2. 100 coins means $2
A 1500 chapters novel, will not cost you $30 or $60, it will be a lot more. From my estimates and what I saw, 10 coins is kind of an average for those. (around 2k words per chapter). If we assume that 80% of that is locked under the pay wall, you get 1200 chapters. Multiply that by 10 coins and you get 12000. Now if they give you those bonuses, you'd pay (no fast passes, only pay) around $120. That is if they give you those bonuses, otherwise this number is double. But there is a catch with that. The bonus coins expire after 30 days. So you would've to use up those coins rather quickly. I.e. 2500 bonus coins in a month, that is 250 chapters on average.
In other words, a casual reader (the E in your equation) wouldn't be able to do that. That is why this is complicated, and you can't calculate it very easily. It depends on the user. If they read slowly, they will be able to use those fast passes more.
That is an advantage. But that is not the majority. I've seen people read 50 chapters a day no problem. One guy read 300 something chapters in 3 days, of my novel. That is crazy. At that kind of pace, those fast passes are really useless. if you can binge the whole book in about 15 days, you only unlock 45 chapters for free. That means, you are still left with 1155 chapters paid. that equates to almost the same amount I wrote previously. Almost $120 (if you use those bonuses, which would be logical).
If I were to calculate it using the rate of $0.02 per coin... that's $230, which is beyond anything reasonable. If we assume someone is less superhuman, and does it in double time. It's still $220. Do you know why? It's because 3 fast passes a day means 90 fast passes in 30 days. that's 90 chapters, in other words 900 coins on average. We can extend that time to two months. 60 days, you know the results? $204. Yep, it would cost that much if we looked at the rate alone (1 coin = 0.02). Obviously, that is incorrect as long as those bonuses exist. But, it will be halved only. Which means over $100 anyway. If the bonuses are gone... whohoho Merry Christmas :D
Interestingly, you could get around 25 books on amazon for over $100. I checked those books, and they usually had 300-400 pages. (you know the ones for 4 dollars). I'm taking this a bit further, so hear me out. Since we assumed an average of 2000 words per chapter, we can calculate the number of words. which would equate to: 2,400,000 words (that's a lot). Now we need to make e-book pages out of it. If we divide this number, by the typical amount of words on each page of e-book, we get: 9600 pages (wow.. I used an average number of 250 words per page on reading device)... I have a fucking deja vu right now. Anyway, if we convert those 25 e-books to pages, we get around the same number.
BUT! That doesn't mean they are equal. Remember that those 25 books are fully edited and completed stories. Usually without fillers as well. You can also pick any 25 stories, whereas you only have 1 at webnovel. Sure they are shorter, but just because something is long, doesn't mean it's better. That is also under the pretence, that those bonus coins are distributed. Otherwise, you pay double.
One last thing before I go.
MotivatedSloth n other words, you are demanding authors to accept the fact that you are robbing them 4h worth of their worth daily, instead of coughing up fcking 0.16$ for reading damn 5 chaps daily? (in this scenario, your precious 0.16$ would amount to 0.08$ income for writer for 20h of his work. How do you feel about it now?)
Nope, it actually wouldn't amount to $0.08. It would be something like $0.06. Let me tell you why (I already explained elsewhere). The authors get 50% of their share from NET income. What you just showed here, is Gross Income. Net income is calculated like this: Gross income - webnovel's fees for the platform and whatnot = net income. The fees are basically operation and whatever. The number they take away, is not specified (it could be actually less than 0.06 or it could be a bit more like 0.07, but not 0.08). There are bank transfer fees too, if applicable but I think they are everywhere (maybe except if you live in china). So in overall, if a reader pays let's say $10, the author gets something like $4 out of it. Not so 50-50 anymore aye? Again, I don't know how much they deduce, but they do. That's it I guess, you are welcomed :D
DarkRay 1 coin = 0.02 not 0.01
Check again, by paying 49.99, you get 2500 paiud coins and 2500 bonus coins (in all pucharses, you get half in paid and half in bonus coins)
so by paying 50.00$ you get 5.000 total coins. That means a single dolar can get you 100 coins, meaning that 0.01$ = 1ss/coin.
DarkRay A 1500 chapters novel, will not cost you $30 or $60, it will be a lot more
1500 chapter novel, means that you have from 1 500 000 words to 3 000 000 words. This alone is like almost 19 standard lenght novels (80k words, 18.75 times). Cost IN COINS ONLY would equal to 15000x0.01$ = 150$.
Then, just as you said, let's count that roughly 80% of the book will be in free chapters, then you take 150$ x0.8 = 120$, while ONLY using paid currencty (both bonus and paid coins, I count them together here).
Then yes, if you don't use ANY of the given free reading, you can pay exactly 6.4$ for 80k worth of words, while factoring the free part (Cuz you still get to read it).
DarkRay In other words, a casual reader (the E in your equation) wouldn't be able to do that. That is why this is complicated, and you can't calculate it very easily. It depends on the user. If they read slowly, they will be able to use those fast passes more.
Here is where your enitre logic is wrong. I just double checked and yes, no matter how much coins you buy, the ratio is the same. SO if free reader can't handle usiong up 2500 coins in a month, he can keep paying 1$ for 100 coins every time he runs out of it. So yes, it's that easy.
DarkRay If I were to calculate it using the rate of $0.02 per coin... that's $230, which is beyond anything reasonable. If we assume someone is less superhuman, and does it in double time. It's still $220. Do you know why? It's because 3 fast passes a day means 90 fast passes in 30 days. that's 90 chapters, in other words 900 coins on average. YOu still using 0.02$ per coin, I have no idea where are you coming from. Can't you just open the site to check it?
And you just used the numbers to your advantage. You said 60days for novel that is 1500 chapters long, and has 2k words per chapter? Thats 3milions words. Divide it by 60 days, and you still have 50k words per day, which trust me, is insane. And I can say this as someone who binge-reads not only paperbacks but some of the novels as well. I actually checked the numbers and you would need about 4h of FULLY FOCUSED AND UNDISTURBED reading time, during which your eyes wouldn't tire, you won't wonder with your thoughts etc to read it. Trust me,in reality it would take well overe 6h, and not everyone can spare so much time DAILY for TWO MONTHS STRAIGHT, without a break. Thats where problem of your logic is burried.
If we take an average reader who let's say reads an hour a day, with 3/4 of the time spent on actual focused reading, that gives 9k words, or rather - 4.5k chapters, let's count 5 chapters. This is how much time a working adult can spare on everyday reading without impending their daily routine. That means you get to read initial 300 chapters for free, and then you need to pay only 2/5 of the total cost of what you read! (so since we are at 3mil words, we deduct initiall 600k words for first 300 chapters, divide remaining 2.4kk by 5 and multiply by 2, giving us 960 000 words to be paid for. With single coin you can buy 200 words, meaning that you only need 4 800 coins, giving only 48$.
To sum things up - if you are an average reader, you need to pay only 48$ TOTAL, for 3kk words book. Le'ts use your numbers from amazon again then.
Let's say that EVERY book on amazon gfoes for 4$ and have 400 pages (for easier calculation, also to even better prove my point). That means you get 100.000 words for 4$. Let's bring that up to 48$, so multiply by 12. That gives 1 200 000 words of what you can read as an average reader for the same price that you need to spend on 1500 chapters 2k words in each book on web novel.
That means that amazon books are 2.5 times MORE EXPENSIVE than reading as an average reader on WN.
As for the problem of having to read a single story over multiple ones, it's up to individual to argue whether one is better or the other. I wouldn't exchange my RtW experience for ANYTHING, maybe except for Brandon Sanderson books or Gleen Cook's ones. Additionally, if you don't like a long book, you can drop it before paying a single penny, while on the amazon, once you pay 4$, the deal is set and you are stuck with what you bought, no matter whether the synopsis accurately described the content or if the book was good.
And the last part, yeah. You are righ. I know about this, but since I'm trying to simply things as much as I can, I simply ignored that fact, but that also proves the point that I brought up.
This update thing is sucks!! Most apps when updated will benefits its subscribers, but this one is too unconventional.. I would uninstall this when it will get worst.. Free chapters? How can it be free when earning coins itself is now for sale.. Big Booooooooooo!!!!!!!!
zettemagat uhh
fast passes are free
you might get less free stuff, but claiming that there are no such things as free chapters... is a very incorrect statement.
zettemagat You see, subscriber is a big word, because It actually means PAYING user. When you subscribe to a newspaper, you pay subscribtion fee, when you subscribe to a service, you pay for it.
You are nothing more than entilted free reader who believes that anyone owes them anything, sad.
This site HAS TO work towards benefiting the company first, then content creators, then SUBSCRIBING readers, THEN ad services, then everyone else, and only at the very end - free users....
I'm just going to put this out there... I am offered NO bonus coins when I go to purchase. It might be that different areas are offered bonuses, but I'm not so lucky here. lol
Hey???????? Only last night I am reading the latest update for my comic book and now its udpated all is lost??even my so called ss stones turned to all 400+ all turned yo zero?? Seriously!!!! How could it be??? So damnated!! Merry christmas you say?? Even if you updated from good to worst atleast dont eat away my stones right???
MotivatedSloth That doesn't mean updates become this worst right?? And what happened to log in and get free ss advertisement?? Besides those free stones didnt earned by free at all coz I still needed to buy data FYI just to log in
yaoyueyi you might be right but how could you explain my other account on this webnovel whom when updated becomes 0000 stones??
zettemagat probably either a bug or ss expiration. they do expire, you know. especially if you had bonus ss from purchasing ss or something, which could explain a sudden jump. if you're 100% positive they didn't expire, file a bug report. it doesn't have anything to do with wn purposefully taking away your ss.
Cantiara The point is, when this apps were updated, all its perks becomes odds to the point that even those earned before were lost. You dont even have the odea how loyal I am to this apps and to lost your stones and be forced to buy so you can continue to read your fave book is unreasonable. There are lots and lots of web apps that comes with good and quality books too. Just a matter of choice that needs to consider I say..
MotivatedSloth Wowee, someone actually beat me in loving numbers and data! I don’t do this kind of stuff anymore since the reply usually is hate maths lol. Yours was fun for me. Good you out this out there~ Unless you’re a writer too, or looking from the business perspective, readers can easily fall into the trap of looking at it just from their standpoint/sense of entitlement due to being used to a status quo which then changes so they get butthurt despite getting so much for free for a long time.
Interesting to see what WN will do in the future. Certainly these kinda of moves don’t reflect well on them from a consumer standpoint and loyalty, but a business is business. I don’t know their financials, but I’d rather see them not go bankrupt or contracted writers making nothing due to remaining largely free.
yaoyueyi Should not be overnight. And mind you Ive got 3 accounts not to mention this one and all of them got zero.only this does not.

Then what's stopping you from going to those sites/apps?
zmyohan you don't drive to a restaurant, get a cup of complimentary cup of water for free, then complain to the restaurant about your car fuel prices that you had to pay to be able to drive your car to eat at there. it's not WN's fault that you have to use data. have you ever heard of... wifi? or going to a library/cafe with free wifi?
no need to be so rude about things, and fun fact: you are not entitled to anything free. (except... well maybe oxygen. but you know. the normal stuff part of every business or company?)
zettemagat read that full reply again. I said, if you're positive of it not being due to expiration, file a bug report. no point in complaining about it here, when none of the staff will see it or be able to help you.
Cantiara You just dont have the idea. Am just saying my point but does not mean I didnt. I only retain this one coz I still wanna know what happened to that book I am on. But all the rest were signed out and well, might be this one too when my so called ss stones turned to coins which I earned by recommending lots of friends to subscribed were finished. I would say,i still have 430 to spend anyway..
yaoyueyi And yes dear read and understood well. I already had my email to them, they said i need to check if they are earned by this and that and if expirable and all. Tsk tsk.. Update you say??
