Dalton_Reutlinger Yeah... and that's another point which is very vital. We shouldn't play hard on ourselves. If we need a break, even if it'll take us four months, it's for the best. It's important we love ourselves before we love every other person.
Authors and Readers Thoughts
Ghassan_ I just can't thank you enough...Your words really give me lot of strength. I uploaded one chapter of "Heavenly blessed" today, just because of your words.
I am feeling really bad knowing that you went through the same. This period really worse. I don't know why readers do it but whenever I see author like me I surely try to comment and give good reviews for them. Try to make sure that they know their best part not the worse because there are thousands of them who tell us where we lack...
Thanks to you I can continue creeping....Thank you... Continue to good work....So many people are going to come here.....

Regarding story completion rate. Can only say for myself. I don't earn from my fiction writing even if I wanted to, return on investment for my works is minuscule. It's because I take to the craft like an art form. My concepts aren't mainstream, so my stories struggle to find a fit. Especially at this place.
Due to my unconventional concepts, I'm accustomed to not having readers or the silent types. So to write is purely for myself, even if I intend to self publish my works with a target audience in mind. It takes a lot sheer will and focus to consistently deliver on a story few a willing to read.
Time and energy is my main areas for not being able to write regularly. I work a fast pace job (other kinds of writing) that requires all my brain's burners running. I do intend to complete all my stories but at an inconsistent pace. Typically, I'll have to move around my completed story to various places with hopes of attracting readership.

I guess for readers who complain about hiatus, slow completion or dropped stories. My askew-if answer would be:
"Creating a fiction story is akin to laboring on a painting, which may take weeks, months or years to complete. Or may take little time at all. Sometimes, the art piece doesn't work out as intended. As the artist we make a call on how we deliver to our vision. Or not at all. Always dear Reader a thank you for taking the time to experience my art work that's my fiction story, for however long or short it was. I hope it brought you a moment of joy. Maybe I'll be able to deliver a completed work in the future for you to savour to the fullest."

I wouldn't blame anyone for thinking I've said something weird

Dalton_Reutlinger I completely agree with you.
I’ve been noticing a trend recently where readers feel the need to express their enthusiasm by demanding that I “must update quicker” or “need to start releasing chapters already”, and “can’t drop a story”.
Personally, I find the above mentioned demands incredibly disrespectful; authors are not content machines. We don’t owe it to anyone to create anything. Furthermore, I have much more going on in my live and often don’t have time to write daily or even weekly. I am a full-time university student and coach children trice a week.
I write because of my own desire to practice and improve my English, and the experience is soured whenever readers feel entitled to snap their fingers and demand more content. It’s disrespectful, and in my own personal experience, it repels me from writing.
I would love to see everything become more civil. Readers are under no obligation to read or follow my stories, and, in retrospect, I have no obligations to create content either. Certainly since I do it for free. I am pleased to hear when readers take an interest, but I would like them to understand that will never feel obligated to give them more content, no matter how much it is demanded of me.
Edit: upon revisiting this comment, it seems like I let my emotions get the better of me. My apologies if it has become too much of a rant. I am very glad, however, that I could share my thoughts on this topic.
I think the author's thoughts section should be longer (the one at the end of every chapter)
500 characters is way too short

Hi I started writing here around June. Truth is I only knew about webnovel after being offered a non exclusive contract to write here. The thing is, so far I've completed one book, now writing another . funny is, my book has 12k reads, no comments, no votes and definitely no ranking. Actually, I only have around 3 votes . 2 of which I did a swap review with some friends. Then 1 I decided to vote for myself cuz no one's gonna do it.
These 12k views have had me asking myself if they're all ghost readers or, my book's just that bad. Hell not even a nasty comment like, "Your book is trash, " Ironically, I wish that was the case, so I know how someone feels about my book.

Janettejustynne Oh My God!! This got me really... IDK what to say... Like seriously, that's exactly the same thing happening to me! And I'm like "Ok" but the truth is, we do not know if there really are ghost or humans reading books because the way the views increase within a short space of time, I start to wonder if there are automatic views appearing on each author's book every second.
I had a comment from a lady on one of my books saying the genre I inputted was to be changed to "Original" since I mistakenly clicked "Fan-fic" which till now I'm unable to change. Still, when I asked her "OK...it was a mistake but what do you think of my book? Did you like it?" she didn't utter a word/ give me a response till now.
I will never in her shoes, have gone to the extent of saying that to someone's book and don't leave a review.
All these questions are questions that need responses and people haven't given a good one to that. We're still searching for all those hidden readers and why they behave that way. This is more than me...
The thing is most of the new authors here won't get enough readers cuz they havent familiarize themselves with the webnovel platform. The niche ones will be ignored and most of the people will always go to the mainstream, no matter how shitty, cliche, bad grammar it is. Even if you had a top notch grammar, good, well-thought out arcs, or characters it wont be noticed (only rarely), thats the sad truth in WN.
I've heard of one post, the western style of novels wont work here, people like instant gratification. If your story is about wars that better be appear on chapter 1 or 3 or 5. Or the MC have to be a gary stu. Since WN is supposed to be for light stories and not dramatic. Most popular here are often system, games, and stuff like that.
But thats just another way to look at things if you are keen on views and likes, otherwise if u dont mind views and comments, then you can choose to not mind this.
Veronica8 I completely agree with you. We can't give so much of time and energy for writting all the time. Pen down all the emotions is not at easy task...It is time, energy consuming process. If we will tell this to readers they asks us then how others are consistent in their writing...You don't upload daily that's why your book don't have many readers. This I got to know from author from other site and I am angree with it somehow. If you will give consistent uploads then maybe your book will one day do good. Don't mind with quality work keep in mind the quantity of work...Always quantity will win.
But dear readers do you understand every author is not same, some can write fast and some takes time... Every author doesn't get paid, they can't say or ask family or other work to wait, many of us have to go through many task daily...It really get impossible when you are working out and handling the house chores too.
And most importantly the thing called writer's block...Which happens with me many times...Sometimes I write two- three chapters on time and sometimes not a single line come out of my brain...
Just like any other human authors also get problems so, if possible sometimes you as a reader needs to understand and should give this little courage to author by saying I will wait...or get well soon...I am eagerly waiting for what happens next...you get better and then write...
Well I just hope one day Comments will come for my book from readers...lolzzz
Veronica8 You just spoke truth...and really thank you for that
Sigheti oh please don't say that...Rant whever you feel like because it always gets better when we see someone else is saying what you wanted to say...We can rant and take out all negatively from our minds....
Drip I also feel the same thing. Because many time you feel to take out all the emotions about the chapter ...
Janettejustynne I totally agree with you...Can feel your pain from heart because when I uploaded my first book...I waited nearly for a month to get a comment...That time I felt the same... atleast people tell me that my book isn't going to work at all...Now slowly readers started to come...Some become loyal readers but I can count them on fingers...But keep writing one day you will surely get response...
Ghassan_ hey same thing happened with me also...After getting two three awesome comments on my book...I asked them to give review for book because after 40 chapters you expect a review but no one dropped a review not even a single line...or they could have just added hearts but nothing happened...
CacackleLasson Yes...Readers only go for mainstream or books which rank high. They just look at actual soul of the book that is story... Grammar doesn't matter, Only main characters have to be perfectly beautiful and larger than life characters. Story how does it matter...? If ML is actor then he is supposed to lead whole film industry. If ML is ceo then whole world should fear this iceburg type of CEO...mind me all ML have to be iceburg (or frosty) for whole world, not fir FL...Yes there are people like that around us but some are actually happy go lucky types with whom you can fall in love... FL should be strong but finally she should take ML help no matter what...
But enough of my ranting now...I think I am blessed now that I got platform to rant....Thank you everyone who is tolerating this ranting without complain...
Scarletheart84 Yeah I hope, just gonna hang in there till that day comes
