I'm currently in the contest for WSA and I thought I'd read a few books from last year's contest in my category. This started with "My Vampire System" by JKSManga. If this got first place, I'm thinking—Engaging plot, unforgettable characters, near-perfect sentence structure, and story-building. You know, the whole 9-yards.
I-I don't understand how this EVER got an award.
They don't really give criteria as to what makes a good book other than "commerciality" but surely there must be some other aspects to a great book on this platform... Right?
If you watch anime religiously, you might know of the 3-episode rule. This states that the first three episodes of the show should give you an idea of whether it's for you. For web novels, I increase this to 6 chapters for good measure.
The imagery was good at first... But then it just started getting bland. "Kid gets bullied, parents died, finds a special power to make him above the rest" card is overused and is archaic.
Reading for a few chapters, skipping around every 10 or so. I don't see any character development, the world-building is amateurish, and his diction and punctuation are lackluster. I found multiple spelling errors in one of the 400 chapters, this is AFTER The competition when he should've got some feedback.
This man has 4,000+ reviews and No.1 in both Hot and Power-Ranking and yet he doesn't know how to spell "abilities."
Looking at the reviews, other people are also confused as to why it gets so much attention. Perhaps from the 200+ 5-star spammers, he gets on the daily.
I'm like, Ok, Ok, maybe all the WSA winners get hate.
Going over to the other Gold-winner, The Crown's Obsession by ash_knight17...
Eh?
This guy has half the views JKS has but... The readers actually seem genuine in their reviews? And most of the new ones are Lvl2 and up.
Ok, I'm intrigued. I decide to read 4+ chapters.
...
AND THEY'RE PUTTING THIS GUY ON THE SAME LEVEL OF MY VAMPIRE SYSTEM?!
I mean, don't get me wrong there are some punctuation errors, but that's pretty much it.
I don't read that much romance (mostly anime) but at least his was genuinely fun to read. And this guy's definitely heard of plot development and likable characters--SHOCKER.
I'm guessing, that you could write a fantastic story, but if it doesn't sell who gives a dam. I suppose the selling point in The Vampire System was that the writing is so vague and the story doesn't seem to lead anywhere that it could potentially stretch on forever until they find a new cash cow.
Sucks to suck.
I wish to see some works this year that inspire others to write because I would've flipped my lid if this happened to me last year.
