I do agree and I believe I said so in my post. My point was more of a joke than to disagree.

Ahhā€¦ this makes more sense. I thought of it as male lead vs female lead. Lol.

Nana_1928

This is very true. I just thought it was funny that it read that way.

I literally canā€™t read your response. Sorry, Iā€™m not talented enough to master English, so other languages are completely out of my reach. However, Iā€™ll just assume that it says something like, ā€œWow, I completely agree with everything you said.ā€

    grimreaper906

Pretty much agree with the others above, but I wanted to clarify:

    1. Abuse in relationships. For example: works where the partner(man or woman), slaps the MC for disagreeing with them, etc.. Then bends them over the kitchen table or the like..šŸ¤® Portrayals of MCs taking abuse because the other character(s) ā€˜donā€™t know how to loveā€™..šŸ¤® If you care for someone, you should want to protect/comfort them, not hit them. Abuse is NOT a sign of love, itā€™s a sign of control.
    1. I hate it when intimate scenes are used too much in a work as well. Sex is a part of life, but I donā€™t want to read about it every five chapters. Itā€™s like some writers use it as filler, then it just gets repetitive and boringšŸ˜’. I prefer fewer, more detailed scenes that describe the emotions and motives between the two characters. Not just wham, bam, thank you mam(which a lot just open with a one night stand, so not even a ā€˜thank youā€™ afteršŸ˜‘).

    2. The writing itself.. If the story is good, then I can overlook grammatical and sentence structure errors. But add in plot issues: youā€™ve lost me. There are some amazing stories out there from non-native English writers, so Iā€™ll just mentally insert commas, semi colons, etc.. But if the story falls apart or the world building is inefficient, then Iā€™ll drop the work. And I say work because Iā€™ve dropped a few comics for over-sexing the work, or convoluting the story too much.

    ~Kinda off topic a smidge, butā€¦

    1. When the author drops the workšŸ¤¬. I HATE investing time into a work, then it justā€¦stops. I Refuse to do the trial reads for this reason. I just vote to get my fast pass, then go. I also wonā€™t read anything else from that author when they drop works without a reason. I become emotionally invested in the characters, and to just stop the work with no explanation just shows that readers are only dollar signs to said author. Iā€™m not talking about the ones where the author actually EXPLAINS why they dropped the work(which are few), but the ones that justā€¦stop. I am an author, and my stories are my brain babies. Even if I canā€™t make money off of them, I still want to finish them. And who knows? Maybe theyā€™ll become popular in the future or something? Either way: d**k move to get readers(even if itā€™s only a few), invested into the characters just to not finish it.

Let me tell you guys something my teacher told me years ago when I was in middle school.

If someone from the street came in front of you and called you a donkey, and you got angry at that, know that deep down you're indeed a donkey.

It literally took me years to understand why that is the case.

SlaveOfTheLord thanks for that catch. I wrote it in a hurryšŸ˜‚

Also: Whatā€™s with the donkey scenario? What point were you trying to make? Not being confrontational; just genuinely curious. Is it the same principle behind why a cheater gets mad for being called a cheater?

SlaveOfTheLord I've heard analogues of this saying, and it's fairly accurate. Though there are some people that get offended simply because they believe it to not be true, not because they feel called out for it. I wouldn't like someone openly slandering me, especially if it were all a misunderstanding. It's like the egotist's rendition of the "Your mom is a w*ore." scenario. You know their lies about your mother aren't true, and you may feel a little off-put by them saying so. Unfortunately, that's exactly what the attacker wants.

Another thing to note is, if you're not mature enough to brush off the stupid things other people say, well, you're no better than the person that's trying to start a pointless conflict in the first place.

Saying or not, people are just offended too easily these days. Iā€™m not disagreeing with anyone or saying that itā€™s okay to be offensive or rude, but some people just need thicker skins.

Also, the saying (like everything) has an element of truth to it. One saying is rarely 100% accurate or true in all cases. However, if someone says something you know to be false about you, and there is no other reason to disagree with them, then one can easily ignore the statement. That is where the saying comes from, and I believe that your counter argument is that there are sometimes other reasons to publicly refute what someone says.

I used it that way, but Iā€™m talking about when scenes like this exist in a show, movie, or book/story intended to be serious. They might not all be that bad, but it takes a lot of work to make a ā€œpredictiveā€ character that is believable. Because the author knows exactly what is going to happen (or rather can make anything happen) the predictions usually get too specific.

In a comedy, this is hilarious and good fun. However, if you are trying to write a gritty action story, this is just bad. Realistic predictions in combat need to be more general to work.

Things like predicting an overall strategy is entirely possible. Predicting what door someone will enter a building through (provided that there are a limited number) is also possible. Knowing exactly where/when someone is attacking is not. Sometimes these scenes are really cringey when a MC claims to have predicted things like:

                • exactly where someone is going to shoot

                • exactly where a blade will strike them before starting a fight (often to put hidden armor only in that one spot)

                • the exact words someone is going to say before they say them

                • the exact minute and second that an enemy is going to do some particular thing

                • the exact steps, route, or attacks an enemy is going to use with 100% accuracy

                • every detail of a ā€œsecretā€ plan

Iā€™ve seen this type of thing a surprising amount recently. The hero gets stabbed, but doesnā€™t die because he taped a coin in the spot that the knife hit. He then stands up and says, ā€œHa, I knew you would stab me there!ā€ Iā€™m all for a character that uses is brain, but there is a limit to what someone can predict or guessā€¦

shadowdrake27 I know man that can be terrible but I think if someone knew what they were doing they could make that hilarious. That's what I was saying. When writing less is more.

Something that ruins a novel for me is when a male leading story OR a female leading story, says romance and the whole thing is what I'd call... elevated romance there are no warnings for some stories, and I can't stand the "Perfect Body + Dumb Female" attributes that seemingly all "I Fell In Love With The CEO" novels have. To me, it's just saying, "Hey, I know that a lot of women are reading this, but hey! I don't care! Let's make an abusive CEO and a dumb anime girl and throw those two together in the cauldron and call it a day!" And then when someone has a problem with it, they add that irritating author's note saying, * "This is my novel, and if you don't like it, you can go f**k yourself" like....it gets old. Stop glorifying rape. It's not that hard.
