Hello, staff members of Webnovel, fellow readers and authors.

I have decided to write this thread to hopefully better the original novel community and Webnovel as a whole.

Before you start reading, this is mainly meant for original authors, but feel free to disagree/agree.


1. Original Novels should have their own Power Stone, aka Origin Stones.

Why: The purpose of Power Stones is for the readers to support their favorite translations, but it is clearly used as a ranking system for Original authors.

Authors use Power Stones at the moment for competitiveness, and with the upcoming Power Ranking for Originals, what sense would it make to have both translations and originals use the same ranking system when they will be ranked separately? (This was agreed on by most authors)

Webnovel wishes the authors to be competitive amongst each other, at least that is what they claim, so why not make it where translations will not affect original authors as much and let them truly compete against each other?

(For the record, I am here to clash against translations and aim for the translation Power Ranking, so this Original Ranking has no meaning to me.)

Suggestions: Just like Power Stones, Origin Stones will reset every day, however, no matter what level the user is, they can only vote ONCE per day. This makes every vote that much more valuable to the authors and the ranking.

2. Latest Updated should be moved to the top of the page.

Why: The Latest Updated is what gets updated the most and where people go the most(from my understanding) for new finds, so what sense does it make to have it at the bottom of the page where people have to scroll down every time they want to check the updates when half of the top part barely changes?
This increases exposure for authors who are new because that is what everybody will first see when they open up the page.

Furthermore, as Webnovel grows, so will its community and its original novels. Somewhere in the future, one not that far away, Webnovel will have the majority of its content original novels, especially when Webnovel is offering contracts that can potentially give you an income. Even if it is only a few, the chances remain. But that is only if Webnovel truly wishes to promote Original Novels.
(For my readers; where do you go to look for new ORIGINAL novels to read? Do you go to the Original 'New' tab? Do you just search randomly? Or do you go to the Latest Updated tab to see what is new? If not, where and how do you find new novels to read? Let me know in the comments.)


3. The Original Recommendation/Featured should be positioned better or make it look the same as Translation Recommended/New Ongoing Releases.

Why: Every featured original novel is featured for a reason. Because you picked it. However, those who are in the front have an advantage over the ones in the back simply because of bad positioning.

Suggestion: Make it look like the translation ‘Recommended’ and allow them all to be shown at once. They both have the same amount of novels featured, so why can’t it be done with Originals?

4. Have someone manually accept Original Novels with a certain guideline for quality control.

Before we became authors, we were once readers. And it leaves a bad taste in my mouth when you see obvious troll novels being posted on Webnovel for the sake of trolling. I am not speaking about novels with bad grammars but the ones that straight out plagiarise others’ work and troll contents.

Not only do these 'original novels' damage the reputation of other original novels, it is also a slap to your, Webnovel’s face.

At the end of the day, this thread is to help original novels gain exposure and increase competitiveness amongst us authors, something Webnovel has been asking us authors for suggestions. So here you go. I have done my part as an author and someone a part of this community. It is now your turn, Webnovel.

    Yep I agree except the one about people being able to vote once regardless of the level.

      Regarding Origin Stones: If implemented, I think it would be okay if voting an original work with those stones doesn't give the user any SS. There would be no gain for the reader except exclusively showing his support for the original work in that regard.

      1 Origin Stone Per Day only makes sense to me. And you could even make a paid Origin Stone version like the SS where a person can buy origin stones to literally support the author (webnovel taking a cut in the process) if you really want to push it that far. It is a way for more than just vocal support to the work.

            Paying for Origin Stones is a bad idea. First of all, this system is only for the ranking, and it will support the author in one way or another. Additionally, who would actually buy them when they can directly support the authors with patreon that fully supports the author? How will the pay be split between Webnovel and the author? I’m sure Webnovel will also take a cut in that payment, so it will not benefit the authors as much as patreon.

            Authors who really want to make money will go for the contract and get paid via royalties, premium originals.

                BaiSiwa Right at the start, I don't think having the paid "Origin" Stone option will work. But down the line, when the picture is clearer of how original works perform, I believe having the option to buy paid origin stones to support is a way of not only voting up a work in the rankings, but also supporting them.

                Granted the price of each origin stone will need to be dictated and webnovel will surely have a cut. But it is another chance to support other than patreon through webnovel I feel, since they do ask for your bank info anyway.

                There will still be 1 free origin stone per day per user to use to vote up in the rankings for original works. I think that's a really good idea. For the paid origin stone in the future, I'm just thinking at the top of my head right now, 1 origin stone = 1 usd for example, limited to maximum of 5 origin stones bought per week or month in order to minimize abuse.

                How much the author takes home from the paid origin stone is still up for discussion but I do believe the bigger pie needs to go to the author and webnovels cut is their facilitation fee.

                Hope that helps clear the idea up. But the paid option is for later, not right now. It's more of a vocal support for your favored original work if you really want to support and vote them. At least the option is made available to you at a price and at a fixed quantity per week/month. =)

                    Webnovel will only pay through bank, but patreon pays through Paypal and bank, allowing more options for authors to get paid. Not everybody have a bank account, and getting a paypal account is fast and easy.

                    Plus, authors will gain a lot more money through patreon. While it is an additional way for authors to earn money, it is not a suggested way since the most they will make is a few extra quarters through this Paid Origin Stone system.

                    If your content is good, people will naturally support you, but this Paid OS system is just very forced and unnecessary.

                    It will be like this now, and it will stay like this even in the future.

                        BaiSiwa If that Is the case, then I am clear about it now. So my comment is now changed, no more idea for paid origin stones.

                                  Remember, qi has full control of translation, and 0 control of original novel before any contract

                                  So qi will never treat them equal.

                                  Think about, what if an original novel become so popular, the author demand a lot of money (which I think it is fair) , but this will never happen to translation, qi could just change the translator

                                      You are not getting the point of this thread. This thread is to help authors get exposure, not to fight translations.

                                      Everything suggested here does not really affect the translations; it is more of extra ways to improve the original novel community.

                                              Their staff came to us, the authors, and asked for suggestions on ways to increase exposure for the authors, hence the point of this thread.

                                                    BaiSiwa uhm, bai, you underestimate how much royalties are for authors. If we get 15% of profits from origin stones, then we would get a lot of money. if we had say 2000 reads netting say 5 cents per chapter per each stone. You especially would get a lot more than you think.

                                                    I have a feeling even 500 reads in one unlocked chapter would be worth at least 10 dollars. And that’s just 500.. you, my friend, might get like 2500 a day. That’s like 50 dollars from just your up to date readers.. that’s just my overestimate - you also might get more readers. However, I think it’s common to give writers a pretty good Share of royalties. However my name is not bai, and this is all conjecture.

                                                            BaiSiwa I think Patreon has a selective audience. By that I mean it depends on the story, and the author.

                                                            However, remember the premium stories would also have contracts. So in addition to royalties they’d get support, and if you happened to be selected, they’d help you in other ways.

                                                            Sure, when compared to ‘origin stones’ authors of some stories can make more money without them. However, with the help publishing, the exposure, the alternate avenues of generating revenue - turning stuff into web comics -, and all the other things they are offering. In the end, it would probably tip the scales towards profitable to drop the Patreon.

                                                            One day, you might have that choice Bai. Hopefully, you’ll make money either way.

Not sure if this exists already, but they should install a report function so readers can file complaints if the source material is plagiarized or outrightly trollish

                                                                                      If a chapter unlock will require you to play a 15 to 30 second ad, i think that could work as a premium way of reading original works.
                                                                                      If they forcibly introduce ss only unlock, it would kind of defeat the purpose of giving priginal works exposure while limiting or preventing future readers from proceeding further with an original story without paying.

                                                                                      I also dont know how much banner ads appear at the. Bottom of unlocked chapters. For me it appears every 2 or 3 chapters, not every chapter.

                                                                                            I can barely support 2 translated series in premium(just a high school student, so no money). If original novels also go premium instead of ad-walls, then rip my reading times😂😂😂

                                                                                              The novels with SS unlocks that I Read are The King's Avatar and Strongest System.
                                                                                              Other novels like NEET have ad watch as unlock option so it doesn't matter.

                                                                                              I can get about 30 SS per day already when using mobile app as I get about 10 from check in, 10 from watching ad, 5 from ps vote and 5 from energy stone vote.

                                                                                              While you dont have enough SS, you can try reading other works that may interest you, like original novels that are popular =)
