  • About the rating system

I’m a big fan of Webnovel. I’ve been on this site for almost three years (More than half a year on web, and more than 2 years on App). I have always been excited to read new original novels written by amazing new authors. However, there is are issues.

  1. There has been too many reviews written by one person
-This not only resulted in bad reviews but also serious bias.
-We can see this not only in original works but also newly translated works
-Why not have it so that there are only one review per person

  2. There has been increasing amount of hypocrites creating new accounts just to put a bad review (you know who you are. Yes, I’m directly calling out those no lives).
-Why not make it so that only people who are level 2 or level 3 can post a review for a book?

    * The "One Person One Review" seems plausible, but what if your first impression of that particular novel was wrong? I'd suggest it to be 3-5 Review per person. And Probihiting different accounts reviewing to raise one's novel reputation.

    • And those people making useless or unreasonable review without stating a solid Valid reason and people earning Daily EXP should just go to respective appropriate Novels Like "EXP Generator" (So Many) instead of doing that on an official, contracted novel.

      * Level 2 or Level 3 accounts should have read the "Book of Answers" or have extensive knowledge about the rules and guidelines of Webnovel, so I think it's alright.

All good points raised. I think one review is a good idea, but the review can be edited. 3-5 reviews can still be used to inflate or bomb novels as malicious people can still create fake accounts.

Also, for not being able to review, rather than limit by level, how about actually reading the story first instead of a bunch of chapter 0 or even 1 reviews? I’d say even minimum of 5 chapters because reviewing on a few chapters really tells nothing significant or insightful. This is a story review after all, not a chapter, oneshot or short story review.

You guys all have a point. Bumping this up so that others can see this.

They need to implement an edit button for reviews! I have read novels that I rated good and bad, but after reading more chapters, there were times my opinion changed. Since we can’t edit reviews I had to write another review. I don’t see positive spam reviews a lot in original novels but I do see them all the time on translated novels.

LilPotato Compare the ratings of novels between WN and NovelUpdates. Many NU novels that are 2 are 5 on WN. Even the very worst novel on WN is like 2.5 or 3* iirc.

This rating system is wonky here. I guess because it's an easy system compared to other story sharing sites.

The rating could be like a customer service NPS score system determined by 3 x questions:

        • Was the book enjoyable (scale of 1 - 5)
        • Would you read it again (scale of 1 - 5)
        • Would you recommend (Scale of 1 - 5)

The system then tallies/sets the final rating. No comments on ratings.
Ratings would be independent of reviews.

I agree that review editing and allowing only one review would be great.

          Hi everyone
How does Webnovel's 'rating system' work? I have already posted my story and thankfully it is gaining some views but those 'rating stars' are still blank. Are the readers suggested to "rate" /"comment" after finishing reading the story? or there is something else. Thank you in advance.

I also don't get why they let the author remove reviews at will. They should let the author report a review that he thinks is breaking some rules and then an admin should decide to remove it or not. That way bad authors can't just delete negative reviews.

On top of that, I don't think "Stability of Updates" should be part of the review score. It may be important but not influencing the quality of the text itself.

The review system is, to be frank, a joke. It was initially meant to give readers the chance to rank books with reviews. Problem being there's a host of issues making it not worth a damn.

                1. You can review the same book multiple times. One book I've read had some 100 five star reviews copy and pasted from the same account. Similarly you can be negative review bombed like this too.

                2. Authors are free to cherry pick reviews and delete anything they don't like. Even if a negative review is fully constructive and not abusive in any way many authors delete any reviews not above a certain star count.

                3. There is no filter on review content. In fact webnovel use to reward review players even if they just posted one filled with nothing but emojis, so alot of older books are filled with reviews containing smiley faces.

                4. Webnovel has the habit of shadowbanning reviews that don't meet an undocumented internal checklist. None of us has figured out the criteria but people still report their reviews being absent from the book but still on their dashboard so its an on going issue.

                5. Frankly the reviews don't mean anything if you're contracted. The ranking system for premium books is powerstones. Or more recently, golden tickets. The review star ranking is an old system that webnovel has long moved on from.

Cynical_Stranger You say this as though you haven't posted an entire thread complaining about how the staff hasn't done anything about forum spamming.

It's only to be expected. If they won't fix one problem, they sure as hell won't fix the mountain of others they've tucked away underneath a rug somewhere.

Darth_Xiane None of us has figured out the criteria but people still report their reviews being absent from the book but still on their dashboard so its an on going issue.

shadowbanning for "insults". But definition of "insults" for WN staff is sth incomprehensible compared to normal person. You can write a normal word, and it turns out that it is an insult (according to WN), now go figure which word is an insult by reposting and editing your review countless times.

Some novels don't have shadowban. Can somebody clarify whether it's author click a toggle "I don't want to see any negative stuff about me" or is it for PG-13 and the like content?

Can tell you that authors only have the power to delete reviews and/or report readers, but there's no toggle option or banning option or whatever.
