Junior_Sundar what?
Your novel is trash if it has harem
- Edited
Misguided_Rooster Well I don't have Harem and I still feel like my novel is thrash but hey I'm still gonna write... One day all of you will be reading my book and I'll be happy to better myself until then... Idk why I just said all of those!!!
Maybe it's because my chicken brethren is the one who made the feed?!?!?!?!?!
Bro, as long as long as you learn from what you're doing it's fine. Most of these authors out here just keep repeating mistakes over and over and their novels are complete shit.
We all feel like what we're writing is trash, but that's just our neagtive self talking. You won't know untill you let others read.
Of course, harem along with other things will stil make your novel trash imo.
Don't let profit get to you, it ruins literally almost all books. Don't write fastfood, write good food.
I mean I can't help but agree.
The reason I disagree with harem is because it's really just self insert. That's the only time it's enjoyable, and only to people who can enjoy having multiple girls and never deciding on one.
It makes no sense to me personally. And in the majority of harem series, the girls are so blindly in love with the MC for almost no reason. Just because he is the MC.
Rather than make me 'happy' or 'interested' this just makes me annoyed. It makes me like the MC less for being so undecisive or for not even noticing in the first place.
There is one series that I believe was a play on harems, and it was excellent - but it was only excellent when I saw the end of it. It was a series where basically the main character was actually just a scumbag who couldn't decide between the vast number of girls who were in love with him. However this series was much more realistic as far as the relationships - and most particularly the pain in which the girls experienced when they competed over the same guy.
There was a lot of drama, a lot of jealousy, a lot of hatred, and a lot of other bullshit. The MC then went from girl to girl (As you would normally see in any harem series), however rather than just playing it off this actually ended up severely hurting the majority of the girls in love with him every time he went from one to another.
They became terribly dependent on him as he swapped from one to another, just using them as tools, and in the end one killed him, and another killed the one who killed him.
This is the reality of harem. Or rather, this is what would happen if harem were to occur in real life. Not the silly little "Oh I went out with this girl and then that and then this one and uh yeah they were all just sorta fine with it" You can't just play with the hearts of people like they're toys without leaving any scars. This is what annoys me the most about series with harems. There are no permanent scars.

Dubstheduke It makes no sense to me personally. And in the majority of harem series, the girls are so blindly in love with the MC for almost no reason. Just because he is the MC.
This is what pisses me off the most whenever I read a harem story. Like, why the f are they in love with him? He has no redeeming features other than he's nice, but he's always some poor guy, or weak, or bland, or plain, or boring. Like, there's almost nothing about him that's attractive. He's not sporty, he's not strong, he's not smart, he's not even rich. There's absolutely no reason for any of the girls to fall for him, other than the excuse of "he helped her once" or "he was nice to her." As if he's the only guy in the world who is nice or helped her. Oh, not to mention the standard childhood friend who already happens to be in love with him just because...they are childhood friends. That's a pretty weak reason.
Dubstheduke in the end one killed him, and another killed the one who killed him.
This sounds suspiciously like School Days, and while Makoto deserved what happened to him, it's not exactly realistic. None of the girls had any real reason to be in love with him. Not Kotoha, not Sekai, not the rest of the girls. There was nothing attractive about him at all, so I honestly didn't understand the angst or why they were so dependent on him or so desperate for him. It made no sense whatsoever.

It's not just that. No self-respecting lady will lower herself to some slobbering w's desperately chasing after some guy other girls are in love with, or straight out sharing him with others. Most women have more self-respect for themselves than that. I mean, just look at the CEO novels. They...well, trashy in their own way, but at least the women there don't do harems. They scheme and backstab each other to be the CEO's wife. And they have a legitimate reason to like the CEO (insofar as you can call a relationship based on transaction "like"). He's wealthy, of course you want to marry him to take advantage of his wealth. And even so you have all the green tea b's and backstabbing drama. Even in harems (the Emperor ones), you'll see the ambitious concubines all plotting against each other to see who gets to be the Empress or main wife. As for the rest of the concubines, they aren't there because they blindly love the Emperor (or whoever), they are there for a stable life and money.
Tomoyuki and while Makoto deserved what happened to him
How does anyone deserves to be sliced up for having consensual sex?
Tomoyuki None of the girls had any real reason to be in love with him.
He become a hot commodity. Akin to a new iPhone that you simply gotta have just because some of your classmates bought it and are now showing off.

I think someone got pregnant.

Sythcake How does anyone deserves to be sliced up for having consensual sex?
Not that...but if you cheat on someone, lie, and hurt their feelings, you should expect repercussions. Obviously I wasn't being literal when I said he deserved it, I meant more that he should have seen it coming, but he evidently never thought of the consequences or of the girls.
Sythcake He become a hot commodity. Akin to a new iPhone that you simply gotta have just because some of your classmates bought it and are now showing off.
And how did he become a hot commodity? An iPhone at least is useful - faster processing speed, loads of functions, better camera (or whatever - just look at the advertisements), etc. What does he have? He's not even that handsome.
Also, if your classmates have boyfriends, you would think the other girls in class would be looking for other (more handsome and/or richer or athletic) boyfriends, and not go steal someone else's boyfriend... I mean, based on your example, people will be buying or begging their parents to buy them a new iPhone, not go steal their classmate's new iPhone.
Sythcake I think someone got pregnant.
Sekai wasn't pregnant. She lied about being pregnant to guilt Makoto into choosing her. Later, when Kotonoha kills her, she cuts her open and finds out that she was lying about being pregnant. No, I'm not making this up.
Google pays 390$ reliably. My last paycheck was $55000 working 10 hours out of consistently on the web. My increasingly youthful kinfolk mate has been averaging 20k all through continuous months and he works around 24 hours reliably. I can't trust how direct it was once I attempted it out. This is my essential concern...:) For more info visit any tab on this site Thanks a lot GOOD LUCK...........http://Works71.cf/

This argument is hella entertaining. Is it odd that I'm grabbing popcorn?
But honestly, some real good points have been raised.
There are many settings that would justify a harem situation for the MC. 99.99% of the harem translated works I have read have settings appropriate for others in the story to have a harem, but not the MC. His family is currently being oppressed? Dogpile him! He saved my life but is in love with someone else? She must accept me!
My personal favorite though is the MC that is comepletely oblivious to anything while persuing strength yet somehow falls into a premade harem...despite never being at home.
Moat of these stories would be better without harem. Some, though, could not exist without it simply due to the comedic effect being the sole redeeming feature of the story!
I think harem is just an easy way of continuance of the romance plot in a webnovel.
Think of it in this way: A webnovel needs to be long for the author to earn anything out of it.
For an action novel, the author can create an epic novel with multiple villains and the MC against them all using his wit to fight against them one after another.
But what about a romance novel? Can you actually even make that long without adding a ton of ntr and drama in it?
What if an audience wants romance with no drama and stuff?
The author is left with only one option to make the novel substantial reading experience and that is going for the harem.
Just like there is multiple villains in an action novel, there are multiple love interests in a romance novel if one uses harem.

Misguided_Rooster I am willing to write good food and not fast food as long as you pay me good money.
Authors are humans too. They too need to earn. Though not always, but turns out fast food sells more than good food in most cases.
Don't believe me? Check the top 100 novels that are there on the site.
Tomoyuki I actually was referring to school days, and by "Realistic" I meant more along the lines of "What would really happen if a bunch of girls were all in love with the same guy in the same way that a harem portrays things."

Hey, I know fastfood sells. But, if you're selling fastfood be prepared for anything that rightfully comes your way.
Do what you gotto to do earn money, but if you're novel is shit if it's shit. And harem is not romance.
Maekellen I 100% don't see any comedy in a harem. And the length of a novel, bro. There's so much that can be done in these chinese novels, so freaking much. As long as the authors truly want to, they don't need cheap crap like harem to extend their novels.
But the majoirty don't do it, which is sad. And those that do, still don't do the concepts justice. I know it's hard to write a good book, but it was never meant to be easy.
Dubstheduke Oh, yeah. I see what you mean.
Harem has my approval.
Tomoyuki oh ffs, how much I hate this forum. Was almost done with my wall of text reply to your post when I accidentally brushed my finger on the left side of the screen, which this dumbass mf of an app took as a command to shut down the forum.
Now all I can say is - fuck this forumβs design and fuck School Days while weβre at it.
Whoa there's strong opinions here.
I don't read much in the harem genre, but I think there's a reason why harems are so popular.
Harms are romantic ensembles, much like how the Avengers is an action/adventure ensembles. Readers get to pick their favorites, compare and contrast characters, promote their favorite ships, attack their favorite punching bags, argue about who's "best girl" or "best boi" etc. Authors can create a menagerie of characters that fit all kinds of tropes, each to fit a certain kind of reader. And with so many characters, ensembles make it easy for authors to write new content--all they have to do is an episode with two or more characters in the ensemble doing something, with the others off in a B-plot somewhere.
The problem I think is that the authors that choose to write harems often are often not writing for an audience, but for their own wish fulfilment. There's nothing wrong with a wish-fulfilment story, but those stories are going to have a limited appeal. A story that reovlves around five monster-hotties or anime waifus clamoring over a sanitized author self-insert is not likely to win many prizes.
Relationship stories require brutal honesty from the author and ability for self reflection, and a deep and nuanced understanding of relationships between wildly different personality types order to make that diverse cast of characters work. But it may be that the kinds of authors interested in writing harems are writing precisely because they don't have that nuanced understanding yet. The large cast allows them to switch between character arcs without going into any particular one too deeply--because they just don't know how to yet.
And that's fine--it's all part of an author's growth. But if that's not something that's up your alley, as it's not necessarily mine, I would just read other works in other genres. Let people enjoy their sparkly werewolves and E-cup demon-girlfriend-senpais.
Google is paying $27485 to $29658 consistently for taking a shot at the web from home. I joined this action 2 months back and I have earned $31547 in my first month from this action. I can say my life has improved completely! Take a gander at what I do...........http://Findjobs1.cf/
The author can grow, I agree and have said this. But, they're all growing in the same direction. Combined with so many other factors, the majority of novels are becoming worse and worse. Look at all the new novels.
I get certain people like certain things. What I say is trash you might like. I've read novels other called trash and liked it, but at the end of the day I myself know it's still trash.
In all honesty, authors can do what they do they just need to change like 2 things: Little to no stupidity and no freaking annoying harem. Literally, if a novel has that it has surpassed most novels. But I guess stupidity makes money and that's all that matters to them.
It's annoying seeing how authors just focus on money than actually writing a decent story. At this point, i don't even consider you an author.
Sythcake
Im sorry but I laughed
The struggle is real on this forum XD
Yeah, School Days was awful. No objections there.
Heres the thing, if the so called 'trash' is popular, then clearly alot of people are reading it.
There's a demand so can you really blame the author for supplying the 'trash' that people love to read? Just saying...
If you wrote what you wanted and no one read it, or you made no money, would you even continue to write?
Im pretty sure no one wants to write 'trash', but if that's what people want, then they will.
From what I see, until general preferences change you'll continue to have all sorts of 'trash' recommended to you.
EternalNightLotus Already wrote that in another reply.
Also, no, I don't write for money.
Misguided_Rooster
Neither do I, but I can't speak for everyone. I write for fun, but other people have their own $$$ expectations
Misguided_Rooster If you hate it so much then why read it?
There is an entire FL section on webnovel filled with one on one romance. Webnovel has a good enough tag feature that most books follow. If you don't want harem just read a novel with no #harem tag
Misguided_Rooster When I was beginning to write novels, I too was against harem novels as well.
My book had a tag #no-harem, lol...
But what happened afterwords was that many readers complaining in the comments sections spouting hate and saying that an MC that the story is stupid because its not harem. To them it was illogical for a cultivation setting to not have a harem.
So yeah, there you have it. It's the law of supply and demand. Honestly, authors would write anything as long as there is demand for it amongst the audience. If there is no demand for a non harem book then an author would probably not write.
And its not really about MONEY. It's simply that being an author you don't want to write a book that on one will read.
So, technically at the end of the day it's the audience's fault not the authors.
If at some point of time, non-harem novels become popular amongst the audience unlike these days. Then I am sure authors would focus more on those kinds of stories.
Shiny_Shirogane But what happened afterwords was that many readers complaining in the comments sections spouting hate and saying that an MC that the story is stupid because its not harem. To them it was illogical for a cultivation setting to not have a harem.
Honestly, you should ignore them. It's your story, not theirs. If they don't like a non-harem cultivation story, they can go read a harem cultivation story somewhere else. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of harem cultivation stories out there, why the f are they not reading those? Why force a non-harem story to become a harem story that it's not?
Carve out your niche, be the story that stands out from the others by being different. If they want harem, introduce them to the hundreds of harem stories out there, but they have no right and no business telling you how to write your story.
You got pressured into writing something you didn't want to. Your reader base is disgusting, and you have no backbone. Writing, to translated authors and a lot of 'originals', is 100% about money.
As an author, write what you want to write. No one can stop you. But, you should always understand - Certain things will make your novel trash.
I'm only bringing up one or two things right now. I won't even go into depths the sheer amount of problems both original and translated have. Why is that? Exactly because of what you just said.
Readers want this, authors give, it's a buisness. And, a pretty bad one at that.
All I'm saying is, write to write, not for money. Because this will 100% make your book... Biased? Bland? Stupid? Too many things.
If you've read on here for a while you should have a general idea of what I mean. Just a bit of research will also help.
lol, I'll stop here, I don't want to make this more of a rant.
Tomoyuki Exactly. Exactly.
Don't let toxic readers influence you. These are the type of people with the IQ of a baby cockroach. Don't let them infest your house because you let them in.
I understand that perfectly, but there are a lot of problems with this here. Money will turn a 500 chapter novel into 4 thousand.
I just want people to understand the various factors that ruin many novels, the leading cause being money and something else.
If you want money, go ahead and make money. Just know, if you let it influence your book too much, well..
Misguided_Rooster So, the problem is not the harem, but situation and condition has make it into trash for the people that dislike harem?
I'm bored. What's your favorite color? You said Green? Fuck green
I actually never understood the concept of harem, neither have I sticked around to read any. And neither have I written any, I don't give a damn what others say about my book. It's mine and mine alone
GegeSadewa I don't know if what I wrote is confusing, my bad. But, the problem is both the harem and how it came about.
Misguided_Rooster Well, I still think the problem is how it came about. Because eventhough I like harem, there are still alot of harem story I did not like because of how bad the harem is.
Well, in the end it's just a lot of isms that create harem.
Simply put .. Most harems like 95% are trash .. and you know it .. the last 5% is an exception... And I've read many novels where there's no harem tag. Instead there's romance tag then I expect to see a good Romance story but no even there ... And another thing is that .. the majority of harem today is really trash no matter how much you refuse .. I mean every girl in a harem story falls in love with that stupid mc cuz of some stupid ass reason and all the girls talk about SHARING a single boy ...
Kirisuna1
Yep, novels are ruined by harems. Just sexism, wish fullfilment and greed. If only western authors made their books longer, I would read more of those instead.
