webtalewriter Harem is trash. Will always be trash. Not narrow minded, I've actually given harem novels several, serveral tries before. I don't care about 'execution', in the end, they are still horribly trash. Wish fullfillment and fanservice, with no actual use.
Your novel is trash if it has harem
Misguided_Rooster
Lol, I agree with you here. Harem is simply wish-fulfillment and cannot happen in any rational situation. It's simply what the author wishes he/she had.
Misguided_Rooster You didn't find good harem yet that's not my problem.
Guess what. Harry Potter is trash because I tried every HP book and didn't like them.
Sythcake Yeah, but those marriages are either political, made based on monetary reasons, or arranged by parents. Rarely will you ever see four or five girls desperate enough to romantically pursue a single guy (who's often poor, plain and unremarkable) to the point where they literally slave away for him or do all sorts of nonsense to seduce him. They aren't talking about that sort of realistic harem here, but fictional harems where every single girl is in love with the protagonist for no reason other than because he's...male.
The wish fulfilment part refers to how the story and world appear to revolve around the protagonist, as if he's the only eligible man in the world or something.
Everytime i read novel with harem on it, i always wonder whether author ever have experience having gf/wife. Bro, pleasing ONE women is already hard, can you imagine as a modern human to have a harem??

Tomoyuki Yeah, but those marriages are either political, made based on monetary reasons, or arranged by parents.
Doesn’t mean that the women are unhappy with such an arrangement. They were raised differently and pretty much perceive the world from a whole different perspective.
Tomoyuki The wish fulfilment part refers to how the story and world appear to revolve around the protagonist, as if he's the only eligible man in the world or something.
Well, the protag of a wish fulfillment story is usually the most eligible man in the world.
P.S. And before u continue to force me to crusade for a topic that I don’t care much about, simply reread the post that I replied to without over analyzing it and then take a look at my reply to it.
The dude pretty much said - Harems don’t exist
And I replied - they actually do
It's not like 'Harem is a trash' but it only became like that because of how some authors execute the word 'harem'. Imagine, if the setting is modern with cultivation, there is a harem of women who flaunted at an OP male MC? I have read novels like that. At first, I thought it's okay at the start but when you read it longer, it became useless because the women are just like figurines at your display and they didn't even have the role for the MC. They just became a burden.
Kidnapping incident, saving the damsel in distress from forced marriage, irrational women if the MC helps them, etc.
I love reading different kinds of tropes and I don't care for the tags or whatsoever if the plot executes well.
I know everyone here has its opinions regarding the 'Harem' tag in every novel that you have read and I feel the same way.
I'm also writing a novel with a harem tag but in female leading. I am very careful of using my plot and I hope that I can execute this well in the future! _
Sythcake Because you're both using the word harem differently. DaPashini is referring to fictional harems and situations where multiple girls desperately chase after one guy as if he's the only man in the world. You're referring to actual polygamy.
Same word, different meaning, different context.
empressblackrose09 To be honest, Cultivation Chat Group would be a perfect one to add harem to. It's disappointing that there's only one female love interest. MC isn't like the usual trash MC in harem novels, and the females are useful and likeable. Of course it just has to be monogamous though when it sets it up so well. Although the first female character that comes in absolutely can't be added to a so-called harem because of her Venerable, daughter-con father.
*If you don't know, CCG is a modern cultivation novel, although there are still cultivators catching up on the changing times

Look at it from this perspective: ( Lets just talk about Translated novels, originals a whole different thing with its own problems)
Authors want money -> Authors do what readers want - Authors forces mass wish fullfilment for everyone
Most translated novles have problems in some areas or a lot. Now the author adds extremely unncessary stupid shit to gain clout. Even more problems.
In the very first place, unless its a setting where it actualy requires a harem, THERE IS NO NEED for one.
But there is, maybe because of author, but mostly because of readers. It's called wish fullfilment. Another problem of these authors is that they are businessman. And businessman don't usually write the best of books do they?
Like what you like, I'm not stopping you. But I will never change my mind when I say your novel is trash if it has harem.
And to the person who said 'the women don't mind', bro have you read novels? They most definetely don't like it.
Quick note abou originals:
Someone has to say this: I've read a few, and holy shit yall stop writing. I'm not - actually, I am - trying to insult you, but your writing sounds sooooo freaking bland, cringey and boring.
BTW - No novel on this site deserves 5 stars.
And for those who will say something like 'there's wish fullfilement in everything' - to a certain degree it's not a problem.
And those bringing up history and shit - Harem is fucking useless(Unless it's absolutely neccesary + more).
If you're insulted or hurt by this, good. I couldn't care less.
My opinion is not yours maybe, and that's fine. You can think differently. But, no matter what, it will never change.
YulongYuXianTaiyin I have read that and I can say that's one tolerable novel that I have read. I forgot the name of the MC but I remember his title (Although it cringes me every time I remember it xD) Stressed by a Mountains of Books xD.
That novel is not your typical OP MC from the start. It's actually enjoyable to read _
There is another cultivation modern novel such as Urban Immortal Cultivator that most of the women there it's either badmouthing the MC or being clingy to him because of such being an OP. Strongest Abandoned Son, Return to the World of Immortals is also like that.
It might be cool to read those novels but every time a woman is being introduced, sometimes I have to stop first before continuing reading the novel because I know what comes next xD
OtherworldlyEggy You are not reading the right novels, Harem can be done well... but it's hella rare. XD
EternalNightLotus Agreed. If the harem is done perfectly with a good emotional build-up then it's really good. Sometimes, I quit novels on any sight on seeing the harem tag as none of these novel expect one or two (My preference) has ever done it correct.
Junior_Sundar what?

Misguided_Rooster Well I don't have Harem and I still feel like my novel is thrash but hey I'm still gonna write... One day all of you will be reading my book and I'll be happy to better myself until then... Idk why I just said all of those!!!
Maybe it's because my chicken brethren is the one who made the feed?!?!?!?!?!
Bro, as long as long as you learn from what you're doing it's fine. Most of these authors out here just keep repeating mistakes over and over and their novels are complete shit.
We all feel like what we're writing is trash, but that's just our neagtive self talking. You won't know untill you let others read.
Of course, harem along with other things will stil make your novel trash imo.
Don't let profit get to you, it ruins literally almost all books. Don't write fastfood, write good food.
I mean I can't help but agree.
The reason I disagree with harem is because it's really just self insert. That's the only time it's enjoyable, and only to people who can enjoy having multiple girls and never deciding on one.
It makes no sense to me personally. And in the majority of harem series, the girls are so blindly in love with the MC for almost no reason. Just because he is the MC.
Rather than make me 'happy' or 'interested' this just makes me annoyed. It makes me like the MC less for being so undecisive or for not even noticing in the first place.
There is one series that I believe was a play on harems, and it was excellent - but it was only excellent when I saw the end of it. It was a series where basically the main character was actually just a scumbag who couldn't decide between the vast number of girls who were in love with him. However this series was much more realistic as far as the relationships - and most particularly the pain in which the girls experienced when they competed over the same guy.
There was a lot of drama, a lot of jealousy, a lot of hatred, and a lot of other bullshit. The MC then went from girl to girl (As you would normally see in any harem series), however rather than just playing it off this actually ended up severely hurting the majority of the girls in love with him every time he went from one to another.
They became terribly dependent on him as he swapped from one to another, just using them as tools, and in the end one killed him, and another killed the one who killed him.
This is the reality of harem. Or rather, this is what would happen if harem were to occur in real life. Not the silly little "Oh I went out with this girl and then that and then this one and uh yeah they were all just sorta fine with it" You can't just play with the hearts of people like they're toys without leaving any scars. This is what annoys me the most about series with harems. There are no permanent scars.

Dubstheduke It makes no sense to me personally. And in the majority of harem series, the girls are so blindly in love with the MC for almost no reason. Just because he is the MC.
This is what pisses me off the most whenever I read a harem story. Like, why the f are they in love with him? He has no redeeming features other than he's nice, but he's always some poor guy, or weak, or bland, or plain, or boring. Like, there's almost nothing about him that's attractive. He's not sporty, he's not strong, he's not smart, he's not even rich. There's absolutely no reason for any of the girls to fall for him, other than the excuse of "he helped her once" or "he was nice to her." As if he's the only guy in the world who is nice or helped her. Oh, not to mention the standard childhood friend who already happens to be in love with him just because...they are childhood friends. That's a pretty weak reason.
Dubstheduke in the end one killed him, and another killed the one who killed him.
This sounds suspiciously like School Days, and while Makoto deserved what happened to him, it's not exactly realistic. None of the girls had any real reason to be in love with him. Not Kotoha, not Sekai, not the rest of the girls. There was nothing attractive about him at all, so I honestly didn't understand the angst or why they were so dependent on him or so desperate for him. It made no sense whatsoever.

It's not just that. No self-respecting lady will lower herself to some slobbering w's desperately chasing after some guy other girls are in love with, or straight out sharing him with others. Most women have more self-respect for themselves than that. I mean, just look at the CEO novels. They...well, trashy in their own way, but at least the women there don't do harems. They scheme and backstab each other to be the CEO's wife. And they have a legitimate reason to like the CEO (insofar as you can call a relationship based on transaction "like"). He's wealthy, of course you want to marry him to take advantage of his wealth. And even so you have all the green tea b's and backstabbing drama. Even in harems (the Emperor ones), you'll see the ambitious concubines all plotting against each other to see who gets to be the Empress or main wife. As for the rest of the concubines, they aren't there because they blindly love the Emperor (or whoever), they are there for a stable life and money.
